Though mechanical, typewriters are also analog and as such have character. From the hammers to the action of the keys there is something unique about each typewriter and there is an appeal. Some typewriters have very smooth action on the keys, some are like typing with a mallet. A letter is askew, the ribbon is running out. It all marks a unique moment in time. A Word file has a date stamp. Maybe built in history but no handwritten note or edit. No XXXX through a word. No inherent mistakes.
A computer doesn't age well. I am not sure how many of these machines will be working in 50 years. There is also something definite about a typewriter. You sit down to it and there you are; no playing solitaire for hours while procrastinating. You write. You can XXXX something out or throw it away, but it can't be undone.
I can see how a keyboard might be a collectible in future years but whether it is a model M or a Das Keyboard it probably wont have the inherent appeal either aesthetic or historical that a typewriter will have.
Oh dear god. I agree that MS is completely within their rights to do this and beyond that I have no real ethical, philosophical, logical or practical objection to their doing so. I have a modded box (and a thoroughly legit copy of Halo2 though I did rip it to my drive so levels would load faster). Your opinion however is based on some misguided and utterly retarded (read uninformed) notions. To the best of my knowledge no one has been able to connect to xbox live while running their mod chip. Which means linux can't be running while they are connected. Linux is irrelevant to this entire situation and your mere mention of it gives me an instant migraine. So dispensing with the linux argument (and your not-so-subtle implication that people with linux on their xbox are cheating-hacking-thieving gamers) no one has stolen xbox live. You would need an account to get in. Could it be hacked? Sure, anything can be given time, ability and knowledge. Are there a bunch of (or even 1?) rogue xbox users with hacked xboxen running Gentoo whilst merrily gaming on stolen (or invented) Live accounts while looking thru walls in Halo2 and sniping everyone? Show me one (1!) and I'll eat my own ass. Promise.
This is about money pure and simple. Not greed. Just money. MS makes their money on software sales not hardware sales and they have very real (lets not kid ourselves) reasons to believe that people with modded boxes (or an extremely high percentage of them (100% of the people I know)) use their boxes to, among other things, rip or steal games that they have rented, borrowed, or downloaded. If you're really into Xbox Live and your box gets banned because it's modded, well, you take your lumps. But it could prevent those with unmodded boxes from deciding to mod theirs and (in MS's opinion) ultimately steal games. It is about money, there is just nothing particularly wrong or corrupt about it.
No I think the system would fail 1) becuase the world does NOT need another console (and I challenge anyone to prove to me that consumers have been crying for another system) 2) because of its shit content delivery system (do we really want this, really? Most people want their games on media if for no other reason than to trade the crap/old games for credit at a store) 3) because people love an underdog, unless ofcourse, it's a boastful, litigious, ill-conceived underdog in which case you could sell tickets for front row seats to an exclusive showing of its spectacular and fiery failure.
I personally can't wait for this thing to end in a smoldering ruin and bring shame upon everyone involved. Even if it is a good idea my wallet only allows for so many good ideas.
but my mother died last December 1 from pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is pretty much a death sentence except for this type that Jobs got. It's a fucking horrible disease (though I'll readily admit that there are far worse ways to go) and a shitty way to die. I hope Steve all the best and if nothing else hope that maybe this will cause him to direct some of his enthusiasm and vision towards raising funds for research. He is one of the very few lucky ones.
For the edification of those not familiar with the Spetznas: An anecdote I heard (or read) was that some guys (terrorists or maybe just heavily motivated political types) took a bunch of people hostage in a building. The cops called in the Spetznas. Rather than try and negotiate the Spetznas sneak into the building capture a terrorist or two. They take them out of the building, cut off their heads and throw the heads back into the building. On the heads they had written something to the effect of "Surerender or this will happen to you". The hostage takers surrendered.
Of course the Spetznas are also responsible for that fiasco last year in the movie theatre. Still, bad ass stuff.
I seem to recall playing a game about 15 years ago (?) on the Collecovision(?) where you were the Kool-Aid Guy. You know, his body is a pitcher and he dispenses his psychadelic bug-juice to all the neighborhood kids after smashing through their wall? "Ohhhhhhh, yeahhhhhh!"
Does anyone know of any download sites for the "Warthog Revisited" video besides the ones listed. I can't seem to get it with sound. The warthog jump is awesome though those guys must have wayyyyyyyy more time on their hands than girlfriends would ever allow. That said I don't think it even remotely deserved the "Best Movie" award. The guys at Red vs. Blue have put a lot more imagination into their work than a couple guys who played it so much they got bored and decided to just start blowing shit up. My 2 cents anyway.
At this point I don't know that it is fair to label $20 software shovelware. Especially in the case of consoles (with the possible exception of the XBox) many of the $20 titles are simply older software that won't sell as well at a higher price point because all the enthusiasts have already bought it. No point in spending advertising dollars on 1 or 2 year old titles. However for $20 I can't see GTAIII as shovelware, Valusoft on the other hand...
Also I note XBox as the exception as it seems that atleast the first several titels that went to $20 were the worst titles they had. Just a way of unloading.
What I am more interested in is a study of advertising within games. I'll grant that a game willnot sell as many copies as a movie may make in attendance but I was exceptionally irritated at the in-game advertising for nVidia, PowerAde and Pentium4 in "enter the Matrix". I already paid $50 for the damn thing I don't want to have to be subjected to adverts as well. If nothing else, in the case of the Matrix game, it only serves to pull oyu out of the universe that is being presented to you. I'm wondering how soon advertising will make it into almost all mainstream games?
I almost expect that within a couple years Nintendo will be out of the hardware business (regardless of their claims I think they would be a third party software developer if they couldn't make consoles) and then you should be able to pick all these game sup at Dreamcast prices.
Modding parent as a troll seems over the top. In any case I feel the same way and with Halo coming out on the PC in September the keyboard/mouse-faithful will get to play the greatest game ever (IMO). There is a case to be made for controllers however. If force-feedback was standardized on the PC then I would probably never buy a console game save for exclusive titles. Ocasionally, though, even though the movement, etc is more awkward with a controller I like the tactile response to my actions in game. I bought the Nostromo force feedback mouse on deep discount at CompUSA and the only title I ever used it with was Jedi Outcast. And while the f.f. was cool the mouse itself was shaped like a hockey puck. I just wish someone would come out with a mouse with ergonomic design and f.f. that was as solid as that in the XBox controller. That and games to support it.
Hmmmm...that's interesting. I bet it would really rock if you were using Gentoo. Between emerge and the sound support Gentoo really is swell. Have you tried it?

Thank god. I hear eDonkey constitutes 99.9% of traffic on the tubes. It's not just a big truck ya know.

Like the Ghostbusters reference. ;)
If you are seriously letting a 6 year old play UT2kX then you need to be shot. Retard.
How cheap? ;)

Not to nit-pick but I believe it was up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-A-B-A-B-Star t
Not to mention those damn Powerade vending machines everywhere.
Strangely, after reading this post, I REALLY want to join the AMRY! Hmmmmm....what the hell is the amry?
September. Same single palyer, multiplayer with a few more maps. And control better suited to mouse/keyboard.
