Seriously, I think after playing GTA3 + VC exclusively on PC i've become a bit biased towards the system (PC version looks magnitudes better... San Andreas' PC Screens look mint), but hasn't the PS2 been around for almost 5-6 years now?
Namco would've been better off doing the cross-platform release again.
Music was fighting that war from the early 90's with things like Prince and 2 Live Crew getting the warning labels before Manson, NIN and co got the wrap in the late 90's.
The last time anything major happened with games was the Columbine shootings (but every form of media got slapped around by that I think) and before that was the MK/Doom (mostly MK since console games get noticed a lot more than PC games by the pols) controversy and Sen. Lieberman's hearings (which led to a ton of squabbling in the courts between Nintendo and Sega reps from what I've read)
Your title is pretty much dead on though, it seems like we're in the middle of another wave of attacks by talking heads (funny its not from the right winged Republicans though.)
Except for the fact that when you get the "best" endings, you're pretty much treated to a fan service image of Samus sans the armor. I could see there being a slight issue with that.
"It's kind of like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with their weapons, sort of. One guy is ice, one guy is fire, one guy is lightning, and one guy is poison"
It's a good thing they stopped at 4 people. One more and you get Captain Planet.
Well if that's the case, then I do think fault lies with Rockstar. I don't think the ESRB did anything wrong though, since the content is not achievable through normal play means.
The question is why this material was left in the game in the first place... Was there any possibility that R* was planning on "leaking" a method to access this?
It sure took good ol' jack long enough to hop on the bandwagon. You'd think he would've had something to say when Yee first made his public statement regarding the issue. I mean, c'mon this guy can't wait to see Rockstar and id flushed down the toilet.
I guess when you want to ride the coat-tails of a possible presidential candidate things are a bit more important.
I really wish someone would just shut this guy up.
Reminds me of this quote from The American President:
"People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."
Someone needs to start blaring Prof. Jenkin's interveiews from the rooftops or something. I think he's the only person who's arguments can deflate Thompson.
They're only doing this cause they want another nail to put GTA in the coffin with.
For all the over-the-top stuff in the game, it is a piece of smart satirical writing (listen to the radio stations and look at the adverts in the game if you don't know what I mean).
GTA has been able to evade every politician's attempts to nail it to the wall with the violence issue. Now they have another weapon to blast at it with.
Still, common sense says: it's M. Kids under 17 shouldn't have it, and those that do have it and have used the patch have probably seen worse on satellite/cable tv.
should've said "recently"... my bad. Well, don't forget that EtM was multi-platform, and I'm fairly sure Riddick was on most consoles and PC, giving them a larger audience than 007 at the time.
That's a really poor reaction on their part. It's just passing the blame along.
Not knowing who to believe on this one, but I thought they had originally said that they were going to make the game more accessible to modders than previous installations. Claiming that the modder broke the EULA in doing so is kinda wacked to me.
I guess the only way to prove this is to have the patch source code opened up for public review or something. This is turning into a "i said, they said" issue.
Doesn't that assumes that licensed games have more weight than heavy hitters like Halo 2, Half-Life 2, GTA, etc. The only big selling movie-licensed games I can think of are Riddick and Enter the Matrix.
Besides licensed materials only get a little kickback to the owners of the rights I think. The majority of the money comes in through the distribution of the movies themselves.
In US, gaming used to be a niche... not anymore since it now racks in more money than Hollywood.
you forgot to add the little legal text:
*based on box-office sales
Hollywood still trounces the games industry when you factor in vhs/dvd sales, rentals and broadcast rights. Not to mention licensed materials (games, soundtracks, posters, shirts, toys, etc.)
Seriously. At least they finally got over the whole-violence controversy.
Anyways, this stuff is in no way "pornographic" let alone "erotic" or what-have-you.
How come no one said anything about the stipper joint and "stripteases" in Vice City? Mind you, those aren't even any good (I wasn't sure exactly what I was supposed to feel watching those... it surely wasn't entertaining.)
Also, Triple X BMX I think is a far worse offender than San Andreas.
Not knowing too much about this, but wouldn't this have the potential for pushing back some of the software development for this system?
MS has 6 months to roll out the hardware and their launch titles in time for the holiday season. If they're looking to knock people's socks off with the 360 launch, you'd think they'd give developers more time with the real dev kits.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the point of this piece that the BT client (ie. www.bittorrent.com) is being bundled in with some Adware systems? Also it kinda sounded as if BT could be used as a distribution system for adware as well.
Just let the system die already!

Games were blamed back in the 90's as well.

And for what it's worth, Jack is about 3 years behind the times. We had nude Sims back in Sims 1.
Let me guess... Jack is going after Eidos for Tomb Raider next? How about 3D Realms for Duke Nukem?
I think Jack just took on the wrong company.
For as much as I think EA is evil, they have the money to take this guy down.
Sic 'em EA. Sic 'em.
Except for the fact that when you get the "best" endings, you're pretty much treated to a fan service image of Samus sans the armor. I could see there being a slight issue with that.
I bet this will be exhibit #1337 or so in the AMD v. Intel case.
Any takers?

/. really is turning into the new Gama redirect...
Can't we just get a sidebar ala Blue's News for this stuff?
And for what it's worth...

Honestly.
This is the craziest thing i've ever heard of. I think my interest in Longhorn just went away.
I wonder if the MPAA is working on something similar... Speaker Based DRM. Don't got the right pair of high quality speakers = cruddy sounding tunes?

If the tv manufacturers would drop the price of the HDTV's to something more manageable this probably would be less of an issue for broadcasters.
But in typical capitalist sense, that won't start until Feb. 2009.

Right now the buzz word has been making more money than the box-office...
That doesn't include home releases, tv licensing (PPV, Movie Channels and networked tv), etc.
Of course we are talking revenue here. That doesn't take expenses into consideration (I think).
This is still going to be relevant in a few years. http://www.costik.com/weblog/2005_03_01_blogchive. html#111069190589189590
We get a few games bending the genres, which in turn create new genres and the cycle continues.
I'm not saying new stuff isn't bad, innovation is good but you have to wonder how long it'll be before we get the "attack of the clones"?
