Well according to the article, everything nintendo does will be free...
Now if that architecture is open for 2nd/3rd party devs (and comes standard in the dev kits) there should be no reason for backcatalogs and connection fees (unless you're doing an MMO at which point you have persistent server fees, GMs, and all that).
If Nintendo is truly doing this, then what we have here is a console battle.net system. And if Nintendo is doing this for free (at least for their games) that's got the potential to throw a monkey-wrench into MS's plans for Live. Especially if 3rd party multiplayer is free on Revolution but you gotta have a Live subscription for XBox.
Even if 3rd party devs can charge for online connectivity+back catalog, i'm not worried too much. The sad fact is that the amount of 3rd party support for Nintendo consoles has dropped considerably since the SNES.
I'm pretty sure Tekken for PS1 had Galaga as a loading screen game when the game first loads. Score a perfect game and you unlocked the "Devil" skin for one of the characters.... ridiculously hard to do.

MM-ing this would be a hard task, but probably not impossible. It would probably be no different than going from The Sims -> Sims Online. You would just swap out the AI playing a race with an actual person.
However, it sounds like this will be fairly close to an MMO anyways, since you will have a community interacting indirectly with itself (through the content server and content ratings/interactions).
If this is as good as it appears to be this will definitely land on some "stranded on a desert island" lists (ironic since you won't have 'net access there).
I think you're looking at emulation in those cases, not recompiling everything.
I'm also willing to be that we'll see a peripheral that allows you to play GB/GBA games as well at some point, or they'll find a way to make the Game Boy Player hook up to it.
I wouldn't exactly call FFXI a hot-ticket item. The game has been in decline for a bit now. This just sounds like S-E trying to expand their user base to the XBox fanboys who dropped the PS2 when XBox came out.
Future collaborations sounds vague at best. Although the rumor mill has been saying that the exclusive contract with Sony is almost up (I never knew one was ever in existance or with a time limit), and Square-Enix has been branching out over the past few years.
S-E will ultimately go wherever they think they can perform the best. Which is why they left Nintendo (cartridge would severely limit their options) and if MS is truly poised to dominate the market, then seeing them switch to XBox360 is a no-brainer. Also, they seem to be following Sakaguchi's coat-tails with Mist Walker announcing its two RPGS for XBox360.
Finally, this could be a good move for MS with the 360, since the original Xbox didn't have a large library of RPGs, which is something the PS2 had an abundance of.
Looking at the console one word comes to mind: "sleek".
Unfortunately, the thing looks like something that came out of a time machine from the Jetsons. Or out of the Area 51 labs.
Controller looks like a boomerang. Oh well, I think you're allowed to have a cruddy controller on your third console. We all got used to the N64 controller didn't we?
Speaking of controllers, since all 3 new consoles are using wireless controllers, I don't see why it's a bullet point for everyone's feature list.
I'd love to know why it supports 7 controllers, and not 8. 8 makes a lot more sense (team games), 7 just seems lame. 2 tv outputs... it's a giant DS!
I really hope this sparks some interest in the OST market. I'd really like to see them offer OSTs from their other games (current and past games, including those not released here) as well as seeing other companies follow suit. It'd be nice to buy these albums without having to pay the usual amount due to import costs, etc.
It's part of the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" which includes Advent Children, Before Crisis (Mobile Phone), Dirge of Cerberus (PS2) and Crisis Core (PSP).
They're all sequels/prequels (BC is a prequel... nothing has been said about CC yet) to FF7 although they seem to focus on certain characters or groups. So kinda like X-2, but not a "direct" sequel of sorts I guess.
Like they're seriously going to put the whole game on the 'net?
It's a demo, it's probably going to be crippled in some way in order to fit in the DS's RAM anyways.
If they do get these in ROM form, I'm sure that won't tick the big N off that much, and could be a good viral marketing side effect if that were to happen.
Still doesn't rule out the possibility of a UMD release later on. My understanding has always been that they'd do DVD before UMD anyways.
"The UMD Video version of the movie is expected to be announced shortly, though Square Enix has been, for the most part, keeping quiet about the version since the movie's announcement."
If it turns out that it won't be coming out on UMD (at this point, I'm wondering if there's going to be extra features in that version to make it worthwhile to people), that could make an interesting change in the Sony/S-E partnership... Especially considering S-E's talk lately of Nintendo's Wireless plan and the hints at multiple DS titles aside from Hanjukuu Hero (while PSP is only seeing FF7:Crisis Core to date).
I still have this issue lying around somewhere. I recall digging this article up a while back, but there's not a whole lot aside from the usual gaming mag "behind the scenes" information (read: get you hooked, not really giving away a whole lot on the creative process)
And you forgot that he needs to write a biography of his recent years, wait a few years, and then write a biography of his early childhood, and then do a revised version of the recent years bio to make it fit with the early childhood.
Regardless, this just looks like SOE being stupid with EQ2, especially in light of the/pizza command. If they think allowing in-game pizza orders and an official auction site are going to draw people to EQ2, they seriously need to get their head out of the sand and realize what's REALLY wrong with their game.
"If we were doing this without Steam we'd have to put it in a box, we'd have to start figuring out shelf space over a year beforehand. You'd see it six years from now..."
But you had Steam for HL-2 and we saw THAT 6 years after it was planned.
Died. Infograms/Atari has some Korean company working on it, and then it floundered and was cancelled.
Gas Powered Games is supposedly working on an RTS. I'm betting this will the "spiritual" successor, seeing as Chris Taylor is leading that project and was one of the designers behind TA.
Taken from the poster: However, user interfaces are devices that can be easily imitated by other companies, so I can't reveal any details right now.
That's probably the truest thing about Nintendo. Look at the SNES controller design, near perfect. Sony sees that and copies it for the PS. Why nintendo didn't continue using that idea is beyond me. It's definitely done a good amount for Sony.

Actually, this is done by Epic Games, not MS. As much as I don't like MS, I have to say this game is impressive looking.

Not to complain but how is this really news? This has been on /. before.

There was a follow-up on the original Game Boy. I remember there was an article on it in Nintendo Power. I can't remember the name of it though...

I wrote a paper similar to this for a class about 3 weeks ago.
Nice to see I'm not the only one out there who picked up on this.

If my limited knowledge of the original trilogy is correct, didn't Lucas only direct the first move (A New Hope)?
I don't see how people expected the new trilogy to match the highs of the original trilogy, notably The Empire Strikes Back.
Sounds like someone's been watching too much Kill Bill...
And jeez... This article makes it sound like he's going to an R rating with this one...

But apparently that's up to the devs.

And wasn't the VMU copied by Sony as the PocketStation? There wasn't much useful released that used it well... Aside from Chocobo World
I was refering to the controller layout, although yes, you're right about this too.
