  1. Re:Ummm... sure on G4TV To Preview Half-Life 2 Expansion · · Score: 1

I agree with a new "set" of levels being an expansion. Epic Games has been doing this since Unreal 1's Fusion Pack. AFAIK, "The Lost Coast" is a standalone level. Unless Valve's updated their story, it's a single map.

  2. Ummm... sure on G4TV To Preview Half-Life 2 Expansion · · Score: 1

HDR isn't all that new... Everyone is doing it now. Age of Empires 3, Unreal Engine 3...

Besides, wasn't HDR supposed to have been implemented in HL2 a long-time ago?

And I thought The Lost Coast was just a new level, not an expansion...?

No. UT2004 and 2003 play differently. Its not just the graphics. UT2003 was poorly recieved by the fans, 2004 is a step back towards the original UT. UT2003 had a very small tie to the original UT. 2004 actually makes a lot of connections back to the Unreal franchise.

  4. My take on The IGF and GDCA In Depth · · Score: 1

I was there. I thought the award show was decently produced. There were a couple technical glitches, but I thought the awards themselves were very respectful of the winners and the finalists.

That said, I was not a big fan of the "Career Eye for the Game Guy" segmets. I don't think it was just the crowd wearing out. Heck, it was only an hour or two into the evening when they started the first one.

I think its mostly to due with the fact that it was primarily produced by Gamernation, which appears to be a competitor to G4. I've never been a big fan of G4 and the junk that they try to pass off as "gamer culture". I think this was a similar attempt, and guess what? No one liked it (surprise, surprise). In other words, the way gamers/developers see themselves is probably different from the way the media wishes to portray us.

  5. Simpsons Nailed This One on Is Blogging Journalism? · · Score: 1

Anyone remember The Simspons episode where Lisa gets the family to buy a computer and they get it hooked up to the Internet and Homer creates the "Mr. X" homepage?

Blogging reminds me an awful lot like that, just they're much easier to get started than creating a simple HTML webpage since sites like Blogspot and Livejournal do all the work for you.

Sign up for an account, fill out a text field with the text you want to put up there, and voila! Instant webpage.

Simpsons nailed this years before blogging became popular. If someone can get their blog to be considered seriously by the rest of the world as news, more power to them. Just remember the lesson at the end of the Simpsons episode: Just cause someone says it's news, doesn't make it news.

Unreal Engine 3 is shaping up to be a very good next-gen engine. The designers have close to 10 years of development invested in this, which is more than you can say for Source. The only company with more experience I'd say is id. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Wasn't this announced a long time ago? I swear there was an article several months to a year ago, stating that MS was abandoning the WinFS and 3D-Windowing features of Longhorn in order to get it out sooner. There was talk of integrating it into XP at some point instead of holding it off until Longhorn was done, since LH's release date kept being shifted back. There was some other features they were moving to XP too I think.

Heh... Final Fantasy has been locked into the T category since it got moved Sony. FF3/VI was rated E for the SNES.

Part of it is due to the addition of the modifier thingys: the comic mischief, mild violence stuff, which was later slapped onto the FF series.

The first course under the new program started in B-Term (October - December).

I actually called Nintendo to ask about how far back the backwards compatibility went... Hey it was a free call.

Basically, the GBA has two procs in it. One for emulating GBC and older the other is the GBA proc.

For the DS to go back 2 generations, you'd need three procs in that bad boy. From a production stand-point I could see why they would drop support for anythign older than GBC. At least it offered the ability to interface DS and GBA games on the same system.

Granted this would only be good for unlockables or transfering characters to the next game in an RPG (Golden Sun or Pokemon anyone?) it's a feature that hasn't gotten a lot of use. Not to mention the fact that you could trade-in your GBA and not feel too bad about it.

The soundtracks that were published through TokyoPop are mere ghosts of the ones released in Japan. Most of the time they didn't have the whole soundtrack, just a "best of" selection.

I'm willing to bet that most of it is due to consumer demand. It'd be nice if they did, since it would lessen the cost of acquiring them, because you wouldn't have to import them.

But it'd be really hard to convince the local Best Buy, Strawberrie's, and Wal-marts that it would fly off their store shelves.

  21. Re:12 months for some on Movie Games Losing Their Appeal to Game Publishers · · Score: 1

The did a Friday the 13th game and a Nightmare game way back in the day for the NES. Both weren't well recieved (although Nightmare did make use of the 4-player peripherals Nintendo made).

Most SW games weren't tied to the movies because they were released well after the original Trilogy was done. Exemptions include the early arcade games.

But you're quite right, both ST and SW have had good game adaptations, and a few clunkers. Nobody is perfect.

  22. Blame Enter the Matrix on Movie Games Losing Their Appeal to Game Publishers · · Score: 1, Interesting

The only recent movie tie-ins that have done well were Riddick and Spider-Man 2.

I'm willing to take a wild guess and say that Enter the Matrix would have to be the low point of movie-game tie-ins. It was overhyped, underproduced, and was not a good game experience. Watching the previews, you could definitely tell that they really really wanted to believe they could sell a ton of it. They didn't plan on two things though: the bad reception of Reloaded, and the quality of their game.

I played it, beat it, ripped the FMVs from it (quite easy when you have the PC version), and shelved it. You watch the movies a couple times and you realize that even those were underproduced (there's a couple with some obvious errors).

The fact that the Wachowski's, Atari, and Shiny want to do Path of Neo well after the franchise has blipped off the radar kinda makes me sick to my stomach. If the Bros. had any smarts, they'd let Monolith just do what they gotta do, get TMO out there, and just stick with that. No one is going to buy the Shiny game after EtM fizzled.
