I thought 3DO went bust cause of poor publishing, the console was dead well before they went AWOL... They whored out the Army Men franchise, and let's not even talk about the Heroes of Might & Magic Chronicles fiasco... Oh sure, we'll make 10 mini-expansions for a game, but add no features... And people wondered why they went down the tubes so fast.
I guess we can thank him for the demolition of New World Computing (and other studios) and the founding of our new publishing overlords.
Well if Steam went AWOL tomorrow, that would be seriously ironic... Considering Sierra killed off WON for Steam, which in turned killed online play for a handful of older titles. The popularity of free online poker game sites makes me really look at Sierra and wonder WTF, when they had Leisure Suit Larry's Casino doing the same exact thing (free online play with fake money (with purchase of game for like $20)) but with more options. If they had been smart and done a non-LSL version they would've trumped things like PartyPoker.com and the like. Granted the game matchup interface was semi-clunky it was something that could've been worked on over the years.
And honestly, I still think when the online servers go down and you can't play a game off-line to be the completely dumbest design ever.
Which you can also get around if you use something like All Seeing Eye... Provided the servers in question are hooking up with that server...
The two UT2004 Master Servers are usually fairly reliable. I know the same can't be said for the U2XMP one (but I don't believe thats under Epic's control). UT2003 one is still up as well I think.
I think Will Wright had batted an idea similar to this after The Sims came out, and before EA's name became nearly synonomous with Microsoft.
Of course, I always liked his other TV show idea which was to record people's interacttions with robots... such as a tennis ball pitching one (going about 60 mph on the delivery). That would make better tv IMHO.
Good. Shelling out real life cash for a virtual item is probably the first step towards major signs of addiction.
What's the point in shelling out cash for something that everyone has an equal (albeit slim) chance of obtaining at some point? It's like paying for a royal flush in poker.
4 months following the release date? I'll place bets on a large update (most likely a add-on or something, cause the XBox has that HD). As to whether or not its downloadable or a discount price title is unknown.
If it's not that, I'm willing to guess its a sequel announcement.
They did sell out to AOL, and then made life hell for them (Gnutella anyone?). By they, I'm refering to their founder (can't remember his name right now)
I'm disheartened, but at least they're going out at the top of their game. Winamp 5 is a very nice piece of software, and I don't know what else they could add to it.
Did anyone expect the program to NOT index everything? I installed this on my machine, and I run 2 accounts: admin and power user on Win2k.
You need admin privs to install the thing in the first place, which gives it full access to ALL files.
If a normal user could install this and see everything, I'd be more worried. But I can fully understand why the app does this.
Also, you need admin rights to run it as well. This is what i've found so far.
The only people who should be worried are those who suspect their sys admins... But then again, I'm quite sure those people have been suspecting their sys admins since before this app was released.
Finally, the only time it will pull e-mail up for searching is when a user has Outlook running. I haven't tested this feature yet, but that is what it says it does.
"The real question on Sony's side is whether or not the PSP will live up to the "portable PS2" promise. If not, consumers might be a little miffed about being duped by Sony, twice."
Seeing as how every big name developer has been announcing a big game for PS2 for next year, and then a PSP port, I'm really not holding my breath for the PSP.
I'll knock Nintendo for the sheer number of NES/SNES ports/remakes they've been doing, but there is some justification in allowing a newer generation to play these with some legal means (ie non-Emulation).
At least when Square-Enix announced the DS version of Final Fantasy III (japanese one), they are going to rework it to use the stylus and touchpad.
I think between the $200 price difference in the two systems, it's going to be a very interesting portable war. Anyone remember Neo Geo vs. Genesis vs. SNES?
"I don't think I am wrong when I say Sierra exisits because of HL1"
I would say that Sierra has closed because of HL2 though...
Honestly, how much money has gone into this over the past few years?
I wouldn't be half surprised if Valve sweeps the release date rumors under the rug and rebuilds the project using the Doom 3 engine.
Also, their talk of easily porting to source somehow hints that Source is probably just a heavily extended version of the old engine.
Finally, sure they've gone to VU with a release candidate. Anyone remember what happened when they did that with CS:CZ? If history repeats itself, consider yourselves lucky to see it in time for XMas.
I could care less if they actually release it on steam or not. I've got a complimentary copy courtesy of ATI and i'm constantly forgetting i have it which just goes to show how much interest I have in this game.
But i'm sure they'll pull through. Once again, the engine is several years old when the game is released and people will still praise it.
BTW, has anyone noticed that there hasn't been any talk of TF2 at all? Wasn't TF2 suppsoed to be the multiplayer for HL2? When did CS:Source enter the picture?
Do you realize that UT was originally intended to be a mod of Unreal? Don't make it sound like the fact that UT2004 feels like an add-on to UT2003 is a bad thing.
By "Inconcievable" you must mean "Delay"

They were listed on the same page prior to the awards. Now that the winners have been announced all the nominees have been removed from the page.
Trip who?

Hmmm... Isn't there supposed to be some anti-Spyware/Ad-ware legislation in the works?
If so, how long until that goes MIA?

So a small minority controls what is censored...
And a small minority (ClearChannel, AOLTW, etc) controls what goes on the air....
That leaves us (the majority) with how much choice?
War of the worlds... 50 years later... Who'd a thunk it?
Let's see here...

I didn't read the article, but my gut reaction is "duh"
How can you not expect something new to outsell something that is a rehash of a product almost everyone owns? Honestly???
In VC they were in some proprietary format, but someone put out a converter on the net to handle that.
GTA3 didn't have an OST produced for it in terms of cds, but you can easily make one since everything is in wav or mp3 format.
Geez...

FF Legend were part of the SaGa series.
FF Adventure was part of Seiken Densetsu
Technically, they're not part of FF, since Nintendo had Square slap FF on them so they'd sell better through name recognition.

Heh, i'm not.
I just find it highly amusing that they originally promised TF2 along with HL2 originally, and now its all about CS:Source.
So what ever happened to Team Fortress 2?
So what's the point?
It comes with the ethernet built in, but they drop the HDD?
So I can play Madden, but not FFIX... Smooth
No to mention the fact that they've probably been paying for Valve to finish this, and if they don't see some return on it, then thats bad.
It's capitalism at its very best.
Honestly, it couldn't happen to a better set of companies.
"I just saved myself a major headache by switching to Firefox"
Not surprised. /me waits to see Penny-Arcade on friday roasting them over a suculent flame of spite
