If you've read any history they realized that Rattle & Hum was a mistake. Why do you think they didn't do anything for 3-4 years before Achtung Baby came out? Heck, they turned down an offer to do the Mission Impossible theme, and only Larry & Adam ended up doing that one.

I wonder if they realize something we don't.

  11. The sound of silence on Next-Gen Xbox To Lack Backwards Compatibility? · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you listen carefully, you can hear all the Halo fanboys scream in agony...

Backwards compatibility makes a big difference when a system is starting out. I remember telling my parents about each new system, and the first thing they'd ask was "Does it play the old games?".

This is great because it's proving my new theory that Microsoft has not learned from the mistakes that every other company has done in the past. Bad controller design, no "mascot" or established franchise, and now kicking backwards compatibility.

The PS2 roared out of the gates, because even though it had a small launch library, it didn't matter cause there were already 600+ games on the market that it could use. Add in DVD playback and it's no wonder the thing did so well. Same principle applies for Nintendo's GB series. The DS will work too cause it plays GBA games.

I guess this just proves how ready Bill is to profit off the XBox.

  13. Hmmm... interesting on Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Without GBAs? · · Score: 1

I was wondering if that was doable... Pretty neat, but I don't know exactly how cost effective that is as the older styled GBAs I think are selling for less than the SP styles. If the GBAs are less than $50 then its more effective to go with the GBA, unless you want to take into account battery expenses.

Isn't that how Epic Games did UT2004? They hired a ton of independent programmers, designers from UT2003's online community to do work on it. Onslaught was originallly a mod that was presented to Epic for further work. Take a look at the credits in the back of the manual.

Of course I think this is how Epic tends to do stuff as well. The bots from the original UT were coded by someone who made bots for Quake 1 I belive.

  18. My take on Are Modern Games Too Easy? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think this is fairly true.

I'm currently playing Final Fantasy IX (I'm a little behind the times still). If you're diligent the game is wicked easy, as you're gaining skills and abilities that make the party incredibly strong.

I'm also playing Earthbound Zero, which is incredibly hard as the random battles are fairly numerous, and there are a lot of modern conveniences not present in the game due to its age (1990).

But there are still some games with challenge. F-Zero GX is by far one of the harder games I've acquired recently. I would also put the Zelda: Oracles pair in there as well.

But in all honesty, I think difficulty is sacrificed for length or story. Who wants to try and beat a 40 hour game if it's going to take you 60 - 80 hours overall due to Game Over screens and reset button hits?

Bullfrog closed up shop years ago I think. A new syndicate would be awesome, but the Strike series was done by EA on their own back in the day.

Besides, Moleyneux is at Lionhead right now, and I highly doubt they'd have the IP rights to use the Syndicate franchise. I could be wrong though.

That sounds pretty cool having the social aspect in there though.

I haven't really played any of the games since Riven, however the books were very cool, and I've been wanting to make a return to the series at some point (especially once I get a DVD drive and Uru and the 10th anniversary edition containing Myst, Riven, and Exile).

Cyan has created a really interesting game-world, and I hope they continue it even without the Online play as a deterrance. I would not scoff at downloading additional content.
