  1. Re:It's a reliable long-term storage medium on Companies Are Once Again Storing Data On Tape, Just in Case (marketwatch.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

I recently booted up my old Apple //e computer and was amazed to see that nearly ALL of my old floppies still worked. These are disks that were formatted in the mid 80's. The disks that failed were off-brand cheaper disks that were purchased more recently. I also remember buying 100 3.5" disks from Computer City in the late 90's. ALL of them failed within 5 years. Many were DOA right out of the box, and were unable to be formatted.

So the adage that magnetic media suffers from bit rot isn't quite as bad as you think... Cheap crappy disks and tapes will fail, but good quality ones last a good long time.

I think it's simpler than that. Facebook has ALL kinds of people posting ALL kinds of opinions. If you look for it, no matter what "IT" is, it will be there. Do you think that Facebook is full of racists? Look for them, and you will find them. Do you think facebook is full of Kardashian fans? Look for them, and you will find them. Do you think facebook is full of Trump haters? Look for them and you will find them.

  3. The director doesn't seem to be dedicated to the timeline of when this happens. Discovery is supposed to take place a bit before TOS, however, the bridge design is nothing like TOS or ENT, even though the Captain says that the Shenzhou is old. The bridge sound effects are all over the place. They seem to have the scanner sounds from TOS, but the Hailing Frequency scan from TNG. There are also a lot of TNG sounds scattered around the bridge, but the transporter sound and door squeak are from TOS.

Oh, and when did Daft Punk join the Federation?

I was watching the premiere with my father, and he commented "You know, they can switch to English any time now." (because he doesn't like reading subtitles). However, you could really tell that the actors went through the trouble to learn the Klingon language, but they all sounded like their fake teeth were getting in the way of the dialog. The same thing happened to the early episodes of TNG with the Ferengi.

Don't worry about the changes in the Klingon physiology. If they stick to canon, they will start to look more and more human so they can meet up with Kirk at Space Station K-7.

OK, Apple, PROVE IT! If you say that iPhones are too complex to repair, then start SOLDERING the screen, camera, other components directly to the motherboard. Don't use any type of easy "quick release" connector. After all, the iPhone is "Sooo Complex", so it should actually be HARD to repair. Only then will I believe that your iPhones are as difficult to repair as you say.

I suppose Bill would want a separate key for login, and then one to logout, and then one to open the control panel, one for Internet Explorer, one for email, etc...

We already had keyboards with all that crap on it - I'll stick with the barebones keyboard thank you.

  25. I don't think you can count Rotten Tomotoes ratings as scientific. There is no validation that the reviewer actually SAW the movie. Also, people who SAW the movie, and liked it, aren't forced to review it. Finally, not every moviegoer uses Rotten Tomotoes ratings to determine if they want to see a movie or not.

So, for Hollywood to base its entire success on RT ratings, is stupid.
