  1. IWILL Dual Opteron SFF on CPUs/Compilers for Numerical Simulations? · · Score: 3, Informative

You may want to look into the IWILL Dual Opteron SFF PC It's in a small form factor design like a Shuttle XPC, but with support for Dual AMD Opterons.

Even if you don't have the money for both CPU's right now...it's a good start and you could add the 2nd CPU later. This would be the most powerful small form factor number cruncher.

While I do think that the GeForce 5200 is a good enough card for an iMac... (Apple does offer a selection of systems that come with more power)

I hope that soon they will move to the next generation NVIDIA card. Even the baseline 6600 (as opposed to a 6800 Ultra) would give improved performance without a big difference in cost, since the 5200 will start to be replaced by a value NVIDIA 6xxx card.

Of course this may only be due to the timing of the NVIDIA launch and more Apple systems will use cards based on the 6xxx line when it matures.

  8. Cheap Advertising on A Look at the CounterStrike Source Beta · · Score: 1

It seems that their engine is finished, but Half Life 2 is not. So to keep in the news... they attach some old content to the new engine and send it out for beta testing.

Not only do they get to work some more bugs out of the Source engine, but now all the tech news sites are talking about it. They can't let Doom 3 have all the news, even if HL2 was supposed to be out last year.

So it's already got AOL ISP & AOL Office.

Why not cut a few more bucks and run a custom Linux AOL OS.

This computer is too slow to run any high end games. So the only thing it would really be used for is Office and the Internet.

AOL could then supply updates and software through it's online service.

It's kind of sad that people who bought an ATI card hoping to get HL2 and play it on (what they thought) was the best card available, now have a card that is outdated and still no HL2. ~ ATI has already released its next generation of cards (X800)

  16. Trade-in, Trade-up on Next-Gen Xbox To Lack Backwards Compatibility? · · Score: 4, Interesting

A lot of people either traded in or sold their PS1 console to buy a shiny new PS2 console.

Not only did they get money back (or at least a discount) towards a new console, they already had a library of games to play while getting in on some early new console action.

This may not affect sales of the XboX2 in the long run. But a lot of gamers (including me) will wait for the 2nd or 3rd price drop to get a new XboX2. However, by then they may have invested too much in a PS3 and just skip MS.

You know, Microsoft takes a lot of heat for crushing the competition.

Now the XBOX is taking heat for not crushing the competition.

In my view the XBOX is doing well. I know just as many people with a XBOX as a PS2. Nobody I know has a GameCube (well except me I have all 3 but I'm sick).

Right now if most people want a new game system they pick the XBOX, the PS2 is seen as being "old" and the Gamecube is not seen at all.

Either way I hope there is enough market for all 3 and that the games keep coming.

It seems that the Doomsday theory gets more headlines than other theories suggesting, disease and climate change (a much slower, more boring process) were the cause. Even though the damage of a meteor strike would have been far more devastating and left the planet set back near square one as far as life.

If the earth was baked and then the sun was blocked by smoke and ash, how come so much survived?
