console games will probably take over from PC games

You're right about the consoles taking over PC games, but PC's are where the avante guarde videogames will be. Consoles are controlled by big companies and big companies as a rule squelch innovation. I burned out on FPS's 10 years ago, and thats ALL thats avaliable on consoles, I own the 3 major consoles right now, and purchase less than 5 games a year. When I was a kid I shit my pants for ninja gaiden 2 when it came out, but now I am so cynical I can't even be bothered to check the new ninja gaiden out.

A game that im in love with that would never make it on a console -- Savage. It combines FPS+RTS, the game is much to complicated to be played with a controller, I use a mouse, a keyboard, AND a belkin nostromo (although the nostromo is somewhat optional). Also, the game doesn't get boring because you're playing against REAL people, and REAL people are sneaky, new techniques and strategies appear on a weekly basis and then counter measures are discovered and they become pointless. Theres a free demo version with just two maps and one race, the retail version adds 60 maps and the "beast" race. There is violence, but less then the original doom, theres no sexual content (although oddly enough the trailer features an attractive woman who doesn't appear in the game!). If you want a boxed, copy, its 25$ at best buy, you can buy online and get it instantly if you dont. This game is really an example of whats good about the gaming industry, and it coudln't happen on a console.

I had a similar situation with a microwave. I was reheating some macaroni and cheese, when it was ready I opened the microwave... the first hint this was not going to be a good day was, a plume of steam rose from the microwave as I opened the door. I got a towel and took the food out, grabbed a fork, and started to stir the macaroni and cheese. It needed stiring -- the water in it was BOILING, "Odd" I thought. It was about that time I became aware of a grumbling, humming sound. Like a vacum, I looked around, and yep the microwave was humming, odd because it wasn't turned on. Then it began smoking. Ok, time to unplug it, the humming is getting louder, more smoke ... oh shit, the cord to the microwave goes behind the refridgerator. *tries to move it, CANT!* Screams to father on the couch, "DAD! TURN OFF THE HOUSE POWER NOW!!" "what? why?" "JUST DO IT NOW!" The rumbling has crescendoed into a roar now, the kitchen lights are dimming and flickering and I've moved the fridge about 6 inches but will my arm fit? almost, almost! no ... just then the lights go out -- my father got to the breaker box

Any suggestions?

A month before my birthday I receive a letter, "Hi grandson, I always forget your birthday and decided to send a present early this year! Love Grandma" (check enclosed, keep in mind Im 20 years old at this time and have no desire to get money from anyone, ESPECIALLY my granmother). I stick the check in a drawer, call grandma to thank her, and forget about it.

Two months later -- its my birthday. Another letter, "Hi, I can't afford much of a present but I wanted you to know I haven't forgotten about you." (another check, stick it in the drawer, call grandma to thank her)

A month after my birthday, A third card arrives! "Hi, Im soo sorry I missed your birthday! Please forgive me! I am forgetful in my old age, love grandma" (another check enclosed, blah blah blah)

She died not long after that. Is there a +1 Sad? :(

You're confusing the concept of time with time...bear with me :) Consoles don't know the time of day. They simply need a high resolution TIMER so they know how much time has elapsed, console doesn't care if its 1904 or 2004, it just cares how much time has elapsed since it generated its last frame.

That being said, the XBOX, PS2, and GameCube will all allow you to set the system time in their OS.

i'd be surprised if even sega games were so poorly programmed that they depended on the hardware clock speed. Generally what one does is define a unit of time (actual time, clock ticks, cycles, etc -- doesn't matter as long as its uniform), then you define all the motion/game logic as functions of a time delta (time elapsed between the last frame and this current one), since the frame rate is never constant. This way, things happen at a constant rate regardless of frame rate.

That being said, ive never done any console programming, so who knows :)

The largest system I bought, list was about 180k, I was very proud of having landed the hardware at about 107 grand IIRC, and I said to a friend of mine, "hey, I just got us almost 50% off on this deal."
