  1. What do they mean?! on Windows Software Ugly, Boring & Uninspired · · Score: 1

There's all kinds of new spyware and adware coming out for Windows all the time! Ok well maybe it's not inspired but it sure is innovative! I regularly have to clean people's systems and it drives me nuts because of all the innovative ways it installs itself and buries itself and really fucks up their systems. You don't see that on the mac!

  9. Here in Canada... on FCC Rules Telcos Need Not Provide Naked DSL · · Score: 1

well at least in Ontario, we're slowly being offered the choice of 'naked' DSL.

Bell Canada, one of the biggest DSL providers under their Sympatico brand (and also the largest local phone service) is slowly making the naked DSL service an option. It's just become available since March 31 2005 and apparently they are doing a "quiet launch" (i.e. only removing local phone service if the customer requests it.) Of course they aren't advertising it because they probably don't want many of their DSL subscribers to drop their local phone service en mass. As a consumer I'm glad to see this happen as I'm sick of paying an extra $30 a month for a local telephone line that I barely use just so that I can get DSL service (I mostly use my cell phone).

  13. As an IT admin I see the need for this. on MS Employee Calls for No More Passwords · · Score: 1

If you make passwords too complex or hard to remember then people forget them all the time or do things that make negate the security aspects of passwords completely such as writing them down saving them inside an application or making them incredibly easy to guess so that they can remember them. However is replacing them with sentences or phases really a better idea? While they are likely more difficult to crack who wants to type in a sentence every time they want to login? As an alternative biometric options are finally starting to become more affordable. There are relatively inexpensive biometric mice now that will read a finger print. Perhaps these could be used as a password substitute.

  15. I know that I'll be writing a letter... on Enterprise Fans Buy Full-Page Ad In LA Times · · Score: 1

While the first two seasons were a little lackluster at best the third season and now the forth season are quite good. They're finally starting to really get into the reasons why I wanted to watch this show in the first place: less of the temporal cold war crap and more of the war with the Romulans and the foundation of the Federation stuff. This has made the forth season of the show much more interesting and enjoyable than previous seasons. I can still understand why they are cancelling the series (due to low ratings). But it's a shame that we can so much reality show crap on TV now and so few decent story driven series. At least Enterprise will go out on a high note but I wish they'd given it more of a chance.

I have a 21" Trinitron CRT and a 19" BenQ FP937s LCD (with a DVI connection) and between them I notice that:
    • The LCD seems much brighter and with a 12 ms access times it is rapidly approaching that of a CRT. Heck I can even play fast action games on it.
    • LCD's really don't reproduce dark/black shades very well and I believe that this probably what is holding them back the most.
    • Although the viewing angle on most LCDs is vastly improved over the years it still does have a noticable falloff in brightness even with LCDs with the best contrast ratios.
    • I notice a bit of flicker and or jitter with my CRT even on higher refresh rates and this doesn't seem to be present at all on the LCD.

It's a bit surprising to here a mac that is virtually silent one minute roaring with the noise of the fans the next. Thankfully this doesn't happen often at all and 99 percent of the time the fans are so quiet that they are practically inaudible. I work as a mac and PC tech and I really admire the slick cooling system that Apple's designed for the G5. The G4 systems are much noiser and seem to run much hotter.
