  1. They do.. on Game Makers Aren't Chasing Women · · Score: 2, Interesting

    At least for my wife..

Sure, she plays the ones they mention..The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, (She likes anything sandboxy and expandable really). As well, we both like the Pop-cap style of small games, (who doesn't)

However the tastes go beyond that..

Everything from Baldur's Gate:Dark Alliance and Legend of Mana to Final Fantasy IX and Might and Magic VI and VII. (She is obessed with those games. One challenge she made is to beat a temple full of Lich's at as low of a level as possible. Her lowest is 6!)

Doom and Blood (Her personal fav) to Jedi Knight II. Diablo II for a while as well.

    Burnout, Sonic Advendture II Battle.

All of the Mario games for the most part. Perfect Dark/007. Even Ikaragua for crying out loud.

Among many others. (The one thing we agree with is a dislike for the "classics". Outside Bubble Bobble, there is not many old games we really enjoy)

    What is the point?

Women gamers are no different than men gamers. Each have their own tastes, likes and dislikes. Trying to lump them in a completely seperate catagory..to be honest is sexist and counter-productive. Make good games and women will play them, if they want to.

One of the problems I see, is that a lot of people don't vote with their wallet anymore, which skewers the types of projects that are undertaken. (Although when it comes to movies, the CW is rather positive I think)

    CashCarSTAR (tSP song)
    DarkPaladin (my original)
Karmakin (Newest one and my current fav)

For single-player games, I never change names if the name is set, with one exception. In Chrono Trigger, I rename Frog to Glenn to clear up some sillyness, as well as so I can actually have a character with my own name. (And such a GOOD character, in every way)

When I need to create names, I use generic names, in order to facilitate easy gameplay. In Wizadry for the SNES, for example, I named them after the role they played with a number. (Because of the alignment system, I kept working parties of both good and evil people and jumped between them)

  7. Nintendo vs. Sony on Japan Half-Year Sales Show Sony Domination · · Score: 3, Insightful

Nintendo, at this point will always be a bit-player in the console market. That is not necessarly a bad thing, it's just market reality.

Nobody wants to compete with Nintendo's first party games. They so dominate the system (in reality they dominate all the systems for the most part). No 3rd party games, equals no broad support.

Nintendo really is the Apple of the video game world business wise. Selling to a small group of people for a good profit.

On the other hand, I think that the PS2 has it's lead just because it was the first in. More consoles sold=more games=more consoles sold. Sure the games don't look quite as nice, but it's still spectacular enough.

It'll be interesting to see what happens for the next Generation. If Nintendo jumps on with a competitive All-in-one system, (GC 2, GC and GBA support) Quite frankly, they still could slug it out with Sony.

As far as I know, most viruses in their execution work using common OS scripts and commands. It's something where the fix will be worse than the cure.

And I think MS is doing something just like that anyway. Isn't that what Longhorn is going to be?

(Not that I support Longhorn, it's going to be a monumental flop, but I digress)

  9. Re:Emulation? on Square Enix Considers FFIII On GBA? · · Score: 1

Actually the music drove me nuts too...but usually it's worse on an emulator. The Final Fantasy games pushed the SNES sound chip to the limit, to be honest. The sounds were made speciically to work with it. On the PSX, it's just not the same, on an emulator it's worse.

  10. Online Gaming on Nintendo Dismisses Online For GC Successor · · Score: 1

Online gaming, to be honest, is overrated.Deatchmatching, to be honest is a waste. Good team-play as well is hard to find. What is fun??

MMORPGs, if you have the time and the money.

Diablo II, for the co-op play.

Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat for team-based FPS

    Strategy games

Subspace/Continum for serious skill-based team competition. That's about it.

All PC apps..to be honest. Everything else, IMO dies with typical lag for online games. Predictive models break down for platforming/fighting type games.

Nintendo has the right idea. Ultra-tight controls are wasted on online play. It just would be sub-par for what I expect. Now, I would like to see Nintendo bring out an online adapter for the next-gen, so the option is there. But there's no way to really do it well on a console, so why dilute the quality of what matters? Local competition and one-player goodness.

It's called the "might as well" factor.

Most people I know who have XBoxen use them as a media center. Mostly to hook up to their sound system to play MP3s, movies, and other things..although...

While we do that, might as well use it to play burnt games. That's a secondary function.

There's not just competition between games. There is competition between consoles to get those games. Piracy increases the installed base, which looks good to the bean-counters, there-go the lack of GC ports.

In Nintendo's case, I think their business mdoel for the Game Cube revolves around a higher profit margin on lower system sales, so it works for them. Business wise.

One suggestion. End the stupid region lock-out. They'll make much more profit if they do that overall. (To be honest, I can't think of a single reason to have a region lock-out at this point)

  16. Morality on Is ROM Collecting Wrong, or Just Misunderstood? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think the question asked is "Is it moral?", of course the legality of it leaves little to doubt. However the morals of it, leave a lot of discussion.

This conversation usually is rather interesting, for the most part. here's the way I look at it.

Rewarding the producer is a good and moral thing.

What is more moral. Downloading a ROM image or buying a used cart? The second right?

How? The producer is left in the dirt, and money that WOULD have spent on that product is instead in the product of a third party. Not exactly a moral outcome, is it?

Sure, the reseller has that right (I agree totally), but from the producer type of view, it's still a lost sale. Execpt that one is legal and the other illegal. (But both the same from the producers POV)

So are ROMs moral? For anything that one can not buy an original shrinkwrapped copy, they not really moral, but not the opposite either. It's sort of like a tree falling in the woods with nobody around. Not really doing much of anything.

My suggestion? It's the same for everything. We appoint a copyright court. The standard is, you keep copyright as long as you keep distributing the product at a competitive price. You decide that it is too expensive and not profitable enough to release. Fine. Either release it to the public domain, or risk a challenge being made. If you lose the challenge, you pay the legal bills of the winner. Simple as that.

No more culture going down the memory hole.

  17. Re:corporations on EMI and Sony Lose Lawsuit Over Crippled Music Disks · · Score: 1

I appriciate the feeling, but I would go one step further.

Why is it, that individuals are expected to keep to the highest level of moral being, yet when it comes to buisness, we can throw all that out the window, all in the name of profit?

What is legal, and what is not aside, morality is a very important thing in a society. Extremely important. However, what are we teaching our youth? Forget video games, music, whatever media, we teachour gets to get whatever you can get while the getting is good. A majority ofthe social ills in our society can come directly down to that ethos! Why is it bad when it's for me, but ok when it's for you?

Now, I'm not a communist, I believe in a free market. But I think people need to be held to good moral standard. A company that is gouging consumers, is strictly immoral, no matter what you want to say about it. A company that is above-board, creating a product people want, selling it at a reasonable price and making a reasonable profit, is acting in a very moral behaviour.

Terrorists might be too strong, but they are a social virus. As parents, educators, leaders, we need to speak against this in the strongest terms we can think of. We need a real return to morality, not this Sunday-dress shit we see now.

  24. Wrong leadership? on Moore Dissects State Of The Xbox · · Score: 4, Insightful

I think Microsoft in general is still far too biased to expect a revoultion.

Handheld gaming is not competition for the console market. I actually think that Nintendo is on the right track with the GBA, especially with the connectivity with the Cube. Not for playing games together, oh no.

Imagine a handheld system with a good flash memory, enough to capture a 16-bit game. Furthermore, imagine connectibility with a CD-based system, and the ability to download a game to the portable system. Not to mention, every company throwing an old game or two for downloadable play. Konomi offering the old Contra games, or maybe Laser Assault (remember that?) Maybe with the new TMNT game include one of the NES or SNES games. With Metal Gear Solid, include Metal Gear 1 and 2.

Furthermore, have the ability to copy over full multiplayer versions of games, to allow full multiplayer with one cart. Not a reduced version of the game, but a full multiplayer-only version.

Furthermore, I still contend that the purchase of Rare was a mistake. Rare is most certainly a great company...however, I wonder how much Microsoft is going to let Rare be Rare. Just a thought.

Fable and Halo 2 do not a system make. Of course, MS tends to want to put games like that silly volleyball game or Tao Feng on the same level. Whatever that means.
