1) Preventing the tendency to nose-dive. Two words: Vectored Thrust.
2) The wings not being horizontal to the ground or each other wouldn't necessarily prevent flight- assuming you had actual airfoils on the wings- likely perfectly complimentary so the wings would close properly. Transition would be interesting for certain, as would coming up with a leading edge that behaved properly both when the wings were closed and when they were open. But having the wings horizontal to the ground or each other is far from impossible- just more difficult and unstable.
3) Most importantly: you're thinking about it too much.:P
and 12% admitted that they often remain online longer than expected
That would mean that I might be addicted to showers, sleep, and my morning commute (when I have to drive). Not to mention that finding it difficult to avoid the internet for more than a few days is kind of silly when so many of us have to use it at work. Not that I don't think it's possible to be addicted to the internet- but some of what they're apparently basing it on seems kind of silly.
The player in question is unique in being one of the only upscaling DVD players that would output the pseudo-HD DVD picture over analog outputs and was not limited to the DRM-infected digital ports- that's what this is all about. The studios think everyone with a HD set without digital inputs is a potential pirate and as such wants to lock us out from being able to watch HD movies on our non-DRM'd HDTVs (or at least that's the message they seem to be sending).
Amen. It cheeses me off to no end that it looks like I'm going to have to buy a new TV set (ignore the fact I paid $2500+ for one 4 years ago) finally have a good use for HD just because the movie/tv studios want to keep consumers from being able to exercise their fair use rights. Because let's be realistic- when have the big pirate houses ever had any trouble getting around the mechanisms they've erected to stop copying? It's pathetic that I have to find myself hoping some country that doesn't have a DMCA and doesn't give a damn about the thing makes a HDMI-to-component adaptor so I can actually watch HD movies on my HDTV.
Though honestly with as hard as they're looking to make it I'm sure not all that hot to shell out any money to the companies responsible for all this crap- not to mention the whole HD-DVD/BluRay mess.
I actually pretty much figured it had to be TSO- there isn't much Christmas music besides theirs I can see a lot of people getting really fired up about (their stage show kicks much ass, saw them here locally a few weeks back).
Unfortunately, I wouldn't hold my breath on getting permission. A good ways back I made an anime music video using what's arguably their most well-known song. A friend of mine saw them in concert a year or so ago, and first found out about their music from hearing the song in the video I had edited. He brought a copy of it on CD with him to the concert, and at the autograph session they have after the concerts explained how it had introduced him to their music and offered them the copy of it. They refused, telling him that as it had been done without approvals and permissions, they couldn't know about it or they would have to take action against it. This rather disappointed my friend, but to me it was a fairly good outcome- while their contracts would appear to not allow for it, they at least were not actively trying to subdue it.
On the DRM though, as far as I know their discs don't use DRM. If the song you're interested in is Sarajevo 12/24 (the one most people are familiar with), I know that Savatage's 'Dead Winter Dead' which came out back in the mid-90's has it on it without and form of DRM as it's what I used for my video.
But, you probably have to have some form of state-issued picture ID to be able to board those planes to travel for work- and I'd not be at all surprised if they incorporate some of the database information that licenses have on them onto the non-license ID cards.
Congrats on getting by without a car, though. Wish it were easier to do in the States than it is...
You've got that reversed (at least in the US, framerates for TV are different in Europe, but still higher than film, if not by much)- TV is 30fps (well, being are video geek, technically 29.97fps), and film is 24fps.
Agreed. I'd love one of these things for my morning lap-swims before work. The only downside I could see would be that I would probably lose track of my count of how many laps I'd done more often...:P
Well, we could always take up a collection to send choice politicians.... I think people would pay to send some of them places with little to no atmosphere.
That depends on what you're planning on editing. I'm interested in this for the same reason- I've been wanting to try out FCP and see how it compares functionally to the software I typically use a my PC, but haven't been willing to lay out the $2k+ necessary for a new Mac and the software. If this does work, even if it's running at a considerable speed hit, it would still enable us PC users to try it out- and see if we thought it was worth the remaining investment to pick up the hardware to make it run to full speed. And realistically most of us doing video editing are probably running fairly power-heavy rigs anyway (AfterEffects is a serious resource hog...)- and in at least my case, I've been doing it since I was using a Pentium 90, so it's not like I'm not familiar with things being a bit sluggish.
Still, it remains to be seen whether this will actually do what it says it will... which is of course the core problem...
Amen. Wish I had those mod points from a few days back now... that's the only complaint (other than the occasional butting up against the relatively small capacity) I have with my Mini. I might have bought something different myself, but since it was a present, I can't wholly complain, I suppose.:p
I'm torn between thinking it would be more amusing for him to be 'moderating' the debate (enforcing the time limits with heavy weaponry) or participating in it. Thinking about that more- I want him in the debates- because he's pretty damn likely to get fed up with both the others and blow them away, and then we could get better choices....
Actually, it's more a 'bleeding obvious consequence' of bad parenting than of the system. The system just has the potential to give the bad parents a false sense of security in neglecting keeping track of their children- there's nothing saying they would keep better track of them if they didn't know they could be found quickly with the RFID tags.
For larger families with older children that are old enough to reasonably be out on their own and where the parents (assuming there are two) will occasionally go different ways to indulge the differing interests of their children, I can see this as being a fairly useful 'enhancement' to the park. There were several times when my family (myself, 15-year-old brother, and parents) went off on our own and then took some time in meeting back up in spite of having arranged doing so earlier where something like this would have been useful- we could have checked and seen, "OK, Matt is still stuck in line at such-and-such ride, we can go wait for him where it lets out." Not saying it's completely good- the already mentioned possibilities of it being used by someone looking for a child to abduct do exist, but hopefully there would be other measures in place (like, decent security, and good parents) to prevent that.
One thing that I've always wondered about with respect to the 'health benefits' of wine (and now beer)... does the process of cooking it decrease, increase, or have no effect on the benefits? I for one don't particularly like beer or wine as drinks, but do plenty of cooking using them (try replacing the water you normally add when making tacos with red wine some time. Yum!).
I'd say your gut feeling is likely correct. Knowing both what I make and what friends who have left the company here to work as contractors at the companies that we outsource to (domestic, not international, but still...), I cannot conceive that it can cost us less in the long run. You're right though- the added costs of dealing with the increased problems and communication times are just kind of swept under the rug in terms of our time reporting- and more likely than not, the remaining full-time employees will be viewed as being less efficient if things are not kept track of accurately...
I'd have to guess it won't play DRM'd WMAs- though I've never tried.
That would actually be an interesting thing for Apple to do- pick up that it's a DRM'd file they can't let you play, look up whether iTMS carries it, and offer you a considerable discount to buy it from the iTMS.

So, essentially, WoW is prepping people to work in a union?

Yeah- it's just a bit harder to get by with just a bike in the winter up in more northern states... ;)

And no- the tile-matching crap that almost everyone instantly thinks of when you say 'Mah Jongg' most definitely does not count...
I actually would get a kick out of a hack to do that (play things back at different speeds).

Really likely to fry one of my cats when they decide to lick one of the exposed tubes...
Assuming you're not trying to be humorous- the scene being referred to was in Episode 2: Attack of The Suck.

Eventually they'll have to go to using 2 letters... which means eventually there'll be a mad rush for /.'ers to get FEMail.
