Sure, but it's probably more the fact that while they made great games and we all love them in retrospect, at the time no one bought them. How many people have originals of Thief, System Shock and Terra Nova? Even my copy of TN was an Ebay purchase so I can't get all high and mighty. And my Thief is Thief Gold, so I didn't even get the original. But I did buy the original SS on floppies, one of which failed which I then got sent back to the distributor who was nice enough to send me the CD version back. Even my copy of Car & Driver is a budget copy.

If people had have jumped on their games when they came out, then maybe we wouldn't be talking about them like this. It pains me to think how many people go OMG I LOVE LOOKING GLASS when they probably either have the Red Ant budget versions of their games they paid $5 for 6 months ago, or Kodak CDs with 'THIEF' and 'SYSTEM SHOCK' written on them in texta.

Just stick with Irrational anyway and you won't go far wrong. Warren Spector talks big but then LCD/console fucks his games so he is clearly all about the money regardless of what he says. But Irrational Games did System Shock 2, Tribes Vengenance (...) and SWAT4, which is fucking awesome. And Freedom Force, if that's your sort of thing. Other than the stupid forced single player arena levels in Tribes : V, they really haven't had a miss yet.

Sure, it's the same with single player games, but at least you're not forced to get the newest single player game all the time cause there is no one else to keep up with.

Also, why aren't people playing deathmatch anymore? Everyone wants to play stupid team based games that require either psuedo-strategy or teamspeak and hours to practice with idiots that treat it like life-or-death. Or endless griefers that think it's funny to mine your tank cause you to it before them (well, that IS funny, but that's not the point). I miss the old days of MOHHA and Quake2, where you just jumped into a server, shot anything that moved, and the second you died you got back up and got on with it. Fun times, and I miss them.

(note : I am kinda addicted to WoW atm, but I still drag myself away to play Hitman : BM and Castlevania DS etc. WoW is zero fun when no friends are online. my solution is to make sure I don't have many friends. having a girlfriend that is into is as well makes it a little harder though)

In my opinion I think you're reading a little too much into being allowed to possess only two weapons at a time, but hey, whatever floats your boat. And I'm not convinced it was the first game to do this either.

I definitely disagree about the AI. I played the PC demo on Legendary and was met with aimbots that led perfectly regardless of what I did, yet still were tricked by me standing with one of those portable shield things between us and me jumping in front of it and shooting them until they were dead. People will complain about the final boss in DOA4 being cheap as fuck, or the skills required to get thru something like Ninja Gaiden, but will talk up blatant perfect leading/aimbotting as brilliant. I've got three racing games, one of which I have a virtually identical version of on PSP (Ridge Racer), and one on Xbox1 (Burnout Revenge). I'm looking at DOA4, of which I have DOAU on Xbox1, and Tomb Raider Legend, which I could get on either PS2 or Xbox1 anyway, and ... well ... yeah.

I take a look at the up coming games to fill my wish list for disposable income, and they are STILL 95% PS2 games. With a high spec PC (which has the dual effect of meaning that there are a lot of games I'll be getting on PC instead, plus I get to actually play decent FPSs so I don't care for the highly overrated Halo), I'm wondering what I was thinking.

    What?

The Xbox name is about as hardcore as rice crispies. The original console is the home of all the lowest common denominator games with a few notable exceptions. They were concerned about it being hardcore? What, with all it's 50 hour hardcore RPGs and quirky action games? Oh wait, it doesn't have any of either of those. And it has ONE sim racing game (more if you count any I'm forgetting outside Forza, which has a real problem with sensation of speed anyway).

The controller has TRIGGERS for fucks sake. Triggers and analog sticks that don't line up horizontally. If that doesn't say "You're going to play nothing but arcade racers and second rate FPS games on this system' then nothing does. It's an LCD system where even the RPGs are majorly-lite (Fable, Sudeki, KOTOR, Jade Empire) and the out-there/hardcore jap action games (Ninja Gaiden, Otogi, PDO, JSRF) are only there because the weak-as-piss-graphically PS2 couldn't handle the intended graphic styles. It's not like the japanese are buying the console, so it's definitely not they reason those games were created for that system.

Find me a 'hardcore' RPG (SMT:N, Atelier Iris) or an ugly 'hardcore'/quirky action game (DMC, Katamari) and I'll retract my entire post.

With the 360, they should be less concerned about something that's not going to happen, and more concerned about people being able to afford it, being able to find more than a couple of decent games for it, and people understand the different packs and add-ons and changes they talk about.

At least you know with a Sony console, you get the bare bones system and if you want ANYTHING else (memory card, ability to play with more than 2 people, etc) then you have to pay for it. Hardly a plus point but it's simpler than the will-we-wont-we, rushing-to-release-like-a-kid-with-a-new-toy, were-going-to-make-changes-to-the-base-system-6-mo nths-in garbage that Microsoft have been all about.

The Xbox is about as hardcore as Halo. Most of us just laughed then, but to all the people that suddenly got their hackles up and are thinking 'but Halo IS hardcore', we're also laughing at you, and I hope you enjoy your school holidays.
