Blogs == thousands (millions?) of pages of self-regarding loghorria -- and growing -- read and commented on only by other weblog hacks, in order to enforce the illusion that they are actually communicating anything worthwhile to anyone. These wasters even right books about their non-acheivements.
The "white hot" field of weblogging, my white-hot arse.
I wish that were true. but in fact its not. i know because I've been buying a lot of great games for the mac lately - Wolfenstein, MOHAA among them - and many more are coming up.
But we're not getting much at all from big PC game companies like Sierra (who gave up on the mac with HalfLife) and so we don't have Homeworld, for instance - and we're not likely to see Homeworld 2 either
Sci-Fi is a pejorative term for the sort of crap "pseudo" sf the likes of Star Trek and the late Doctor Who. This guy is definately an honourable practitioner of SF, "Hard SF" in fact, which is the highest level of the genre.
And one more thing, do you think it is possible for Slashdot to post an SF related post without some completeyl lame Star Trek reference? I know the slashdot editors are starved for culture, but Star Trek is really the absolute pits (along with anime, a ratshit derivative and dead style that was only created to sell childrens toys). Try reading a few books for inspiration. And I don't mean Terry-bloody-Pratchett.
Christ what rubbish. Many of Picasso's paintings and drawings are absolutely beautiful and completely without peer. Maybe his Cubism confuses you, but it's still a landmark in human understanding of perception. Your comment is akin to: Shakespeare never wrote anything good. moron.
Yeah, that's because they changed the printing on the boxes to read "USB 2.0" because the USB 2.0 standard is backwards compatible with USB 1.0 devices. There are no USB devices (drives etc) yet that actually use the new standard past the capacity of the old standard.
Don't blame the English, who converted to metric measurements, along with the rest of the civilised world, 50 years ago. The only thickos left using Imperial measurements are the Yanks, who persist despite the glaringly obvious disadvantages, supposedly because they think it's a commie plot. Typical Dumbasses.
Xserve has a 4 gig data path to the CPU?
I think not. Even with DDR it is 2.2 gb/s to the CPU, which only has a 133 MHz FSB so most of the bandwidth is watsed. And supposedly two processors are meant to operate on the same 2.2 gb/s bus.
Check out the diagrams that Steve Jobs put up during the Xserve launch, which show this clearly.
I seriously hope the new powermacs do something about this. The Xserve's DDR set-up is ok for a server, where there may be a lot of I/O to Ram DMA's that bypass the processor entirely. But for a desktop it almost pointless. Rumours that the new ProMacs have an Nvidea nForce2 northbridge better be true, at least.
Like it or not, Media is the plural of Medium in the original Latin. In English, unlike Latin, nouns are pluralised by tha addition of an -s. So in English, the plural of Medium is Mediums. The affectation of taking a Latin plural form for a latinate noun is just that - a recent affectation imposed in the 19th century by the grammars used in the new, widespread schooling - which were based on Latin grammars. Mediums is not only correct in English, it is arguably more correct - no one made it up, it's how the language works.
Simpliarly, the plural of Octupus, in English, is Octopuses, not Octupi.
"Requiring you to quit other applications is unacceptable for an application install, absolutely unacceptable."
poor baby. life's hard isn't it? god knows how we are expected to cope with such hardship
stupid fuck
Orlowski is a former Be junkie now consumed with hatred because Apple chose NeXT and consigned his pretty (but ultimately almost useless) OS to the trash bin of history. And he knows he'll get page hits if he writes a mac story, and the more contentious he can make it the more hits he gets.
The Register is dying and Orlowski is just trying to save his job.
Nits? It's the facts, Jack.
Gould's grand reputation is being touted here, but it is undeserved. Not everyone who reads his books know that he stood outside the main thrust of evolutionary theory.
As for speaking ill of the dead, I've no axe to grind over Gould but I wish we would adopt the tradition of speaking the truth about the dead.
Why should anyone care what the Cluetrain wannabes have to say, except other members of their self-aggrandising clique?
That'd be the category for Reactionary Old Gits Who Can't See Better Than The Good Old Days..
Yeah but can you imagine a Beowulf Cluster of small gorillas?
"Game Theory" is not about computer games, you prtetentious idiot.

That's just plain wrong. The poster you replied to had it right, so why don't you just sit down and shut up?

Sell that thing on ebay and get yourself a mac. You know you deserve it.
Also, is hardware accelerated Quarts in Jaguar going to make a difference to that project?
ever read macslash? it's a peice of shit. this is atypically useless behaviour by the editors and I'm glad tey've been squatted. good riddnce

Both of you should loook at OsX (a unix) and the development environment that Cocoa offers. "plug it in to your desktop" describes it perfectly
Apple posted 38 million profit in the first quarter this year.
Umm. 4 BILLION in the bank, you mean. Yeah, that US Dollar, Yankee-Boy.
get with the programme, Dino. No one cares about your voice in the wilderness. Watch as your enemies at Apple anihilate the world you know.
