  1. Re:samba team... on Samba Team Points Out SCO's Hypocrisy · · Score: 4, Funny

    Here's a start
Sorry, but I'm at work and I only have access to Microsoft Paint right now. But maybe we can have a new /. contest where we all "decorate" this picture.

  2. Ninja Gaiden on Best Videogame Endings Discussed · · Score: 2, Interesting

I always thought the Ninja Gaiden series on NES had some of the coolest endings, and some of hardest final bosses. They really set the bar high with all thier animated cut-scenes between levels leading up a long scene at the end.

  3. Wrong expectations on GBA - A Wasteland For Creativity? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I was under the impression that the GBA was designed so that you could bring your favorite console games along with you when you travelled. I didn't think the goal was ever to create new games, but was really to bring NES/SNES/PSX games to a portable platform. If you want new games look at the consoles. Obviously that is where the innovation will take place.
I think we should not look at GBA as another independent platform, but more as a supplement to the existing console platforms. This is especially true if you think of it as a supplement to the Gamecube, with all the connectivity features.

  4. Seems like nintendo was on to something... on DVD Playback Issues On Consoles Enumerated · · Score: 1

DVD movies compatible with Gamecube: Zero
DVD movies compatible with my JVC DVD player: All of them
There you go. See how simple that was. Just think of how many Gamecubes Nintendo would have sold if they added a shitty DVD player that barely worked, needed a "sold separately" remote, and several driver updates to function reasonably well. I hope Sony and MS are proud of themselves.

I'd love to see other Linux venders jump in and call it a class action lawsuit. SCO's FUD is hurting a bunch of people, not just Red Hat. It seems like a candidate for class action. Or maybe it would do more damage to have a bunch of smaller suits hammering away at SCO's legal team, little by little.

  8. The most popular guy in his dorm on Low-power FM Transmitters Banned in UK · · Score: 1

Can you imagine broadcasting your entire MP3 collection throughout your entire college dorm building for everyone to hear. Every student could have their own radio station that could only be picked up in the dorm. Why bother downloading the songs when you could actually just tune in to somebody elses ipod broadcast. Don't tell the RIAA.

  9. Re:uhhh on Cyber Sleuths vs. Secret Networks · · Score: 2, Interesting

Here is what makes it murky: This guy isn't looking for copyrighted files, he's looking for file swappers, whether the swapper owns the copyright or not. What I do in my own house (hard drive) is my business, and I don't want anyone peeking in my windows (ports) without my permission.

And yes, I swap a lot of files that I own the copyright to. I am a musician and I like to make my music available to everyone. More people trade on Kazaa than visit mp3.com on any given day so it just makes sense to use P2P to distribute indie music.

  10. Re:is this NEW? on Manhunt - Rockstar's Secret Weapon? · · Score: 3, Interesting

That's the problem with making a game where your character is free to do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. It's hard to make another game with anything new to do.

Maybe your character can eat his own arm to survive. Now, that would be cool.

  11. What an idiot on Digging Holes in Google · · Score: 1

Either this writer is an idiot or he thinks his readers are. (It is MSN after all)

Googlehole No. 1: All Shopping, All the Time. Search for "flowers," and more than 90 percent of the top results are online florists.
Well, since 90 percent of websites in the world are selling something, I'd say that's right on.

Googlehole No. 2: Skewed Synonyms. Search for "apple" on Google, and you have to troll through a couple pages of results before you get anything not directly related to Apple Computer
Is it that hard to include quotes and another search term. When this guy wants to research gold gloves of Ozzie Smith, does he search for "smith"? Idiot.

Googlehole No. 3: Book Learning. This is of course no surprise because I would think most authors don't publish their books online for free. PDF articles on the other hand are all over the place.

  12. Microsoft take notice on Red Hat To Drop Boxed Retail Distribution · · Score: 3, Interesting

The first thing I thought of, is "Why doesn't Microsoft distribute electronically?"
For instance if someone buys a retail box of XP today, they get the original release without the most current bug fixes for the OS and IE. It seems it would be more convenient if they could just purchase a completely updated and fixed version of XP online and just download it. I'm sure they won't do it, because there are plenty of reasons not to, many of which have been mentioned by other posts here already, but nonetheless, it would be nice to have that option.
Personally, I would never buy a retail box of Linux because I always the very latest, and I can get that in a downloaded iso(usually).

  13. Allowances for indie professional musicians on House Bill to Make File-Sharing an Automatic Felony · · Score: 1

As far as I can tell there is no allowance for independent professional musicians to allow their own copyrighted work to be traded.
For instance, I have recorded an album, which own the copyright to. As the copyright owner I can and do grant permission for my music to be copied and traded on P2P networks. I however, would not grant permission for my music to be used in a movie, or sold on a compilation, for instance, without my express written consent. I guess that's kind of like the GPL, where you are free to copy the code, but if you want to sell it, there are other rules (regarding source code, etc. although I'm a newb regarding GPL rules).
As far as I can tell by reading the bill (IANAL) there is no allowance for musicians me like me. I would just go to jail.

Instead they paid $100 million of our tax dollars to a company who is breaking antitrust laws. Maybe Microsoft isn't the bad guy here.

  15. Re:The only thing I would like on Evaluating a System for Selling and Delivering MP3s? · · Score: 1

I agree. Non-compressed files are the key to everything. Why would anyone pay the price of a CD to get inferior sound quality?(Apple fans apparently do, but there's no accounting for taste.)
I download a ton of MP3's, but when I come across an album I enjoy, I always buy the CD, in order to hear the professionally mixed and mastered version as the artist and studio engineers intended.
To get an idea of where I'm coming from, I just bought "The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium" and it's one of the best albums ever. That album for instance has no singles. It' basically like one hour long musical piece that must be enjoyed as a whole, not in parts.

  16. Never on nintendo on Tecmo Talk Dead Or Alive, Ninja Gaiden · · Score: 1

I think it's a shame that Ninja Gaiden will likely never be released for Gamecube. Team Ninja wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for Nintendo and the NES. But the again, you could say for most game companies in existance today. Thanks for nothin' Team Ninja!

To this day, I still own an NES and the three Ninja Gaiden games, so I can play them on their native system.

  17. Re:Why Windows? on More Info on Phantom Game Console · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's so they can inflate the "number of software titles", when they launch. There are millions of shareware tetris/pacman/solitaire clones that will already play on their Windows machine. So technically, at launch it will have more software titles than ANY OTHER console. Linux would have Tux racer and ...well anyway I agree, linux would be a better idea.

If for no other reason, just imagine that MS could pull the plug on the licenses at any moment if they think it's cutting into Xbox sales, which it likely will, though not by much.

"I thought you'd like to know that I am a warrior, I am fighting for mankind's freedom. Freedom from this society"
Funny, he didn't mention any dwarves or elves (as in the actual game). In fact that statement has nothing to do at all with the Warriors of Freedom game. This is clearly just a coincidence at best. But this comes from the same guy who said a sniper learned to shoot using Halo(without ever actually touching a gun), so I'll keep playing NBA Street and I'll be Lebron James in no time. Sure. Using that logic I'm just going to start practicing my pimping skills by playing Leisure Suit Larry all day. Hope it works.

  21. Dismisses on Nintendo Dismisses Online For GC Successor · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you read the article, he says it's a consideration that they're looking into. I'm not sure how that can be seen as dismissing. He's right about one thing though...no one is paying for subscriptions, or at least not enough for Nintendo to care. They have their revenue streams and the money is pouring in. MS and Sony are not exactly making a killing on those online subscriptions. Nonetheless in the future it will be interesting to see where Nintendo takes their console, since ...
Sony is basically making a WWW enabled/Cable TV box/TIVO/DVD/MP3 player that also happens to play Playstation games.
Microsoft is on their way to making a (DRM restricted)Windows PC/TIVO/DVD/MP3 player that also happens to play Xbox games.
Nokia has that digital camera/video/text messaging/cellphone (I think) that also just happens to play games.
Nintendo has one console that ONLY plays games and one handheld that ONLY plays games(third party hardware excluded).
If the MS/Sony/Nokia way was better, we'd all be using sporks in our home for silverware. Me, I like my fork and my spoon separate. ;)

  23. Re:What Nintendo SHOULD do on Analyst Predicts Further Console Price Cuts · · Score: 1

Interesting idea. They are going to bundle the GBA player with the Gamecube, which should appeal to older gamers like us, who appreciate quality titles like Castlevania for GBA, yet offering the SP as a choice would appeal to kids who just love their portables. Maybe you could get a choice of which GBA (SP or Player), AND one free game like they do now. They would rule next Christmas if they did that. Microsoft and Sony can't give away handhelds so Nintendo always wins. Maybe MS will give away OS's. Buy an Xbox get a copy of WinXP!

  24. Re:hrmm... on Nokia Slams GameBoy, Discusses N-Gage · · Score: 1

I don't know about you but that N-gage thing sure looks a lot like the OLDER GBA, so if you pulled a N-gage out of your pocket, people might say, "Hey what's the deal with the old GBA. Why don't you have an SP yet?" There is a reason Nintendo created the SP, and most folks agree that the SP is the best design yet.

And as if anybody needed another reason why GBA is a system for mature gamers who want great gaming: I give you Castlevania.
