A January launch of Windows Vista allows us to execute in a consistent way throughout the holidays, and will provide the right opportunity for a large, exciting launch industrywide after the New Year.

That was from a VP at HP. I hope he realizes that the holidays are never ending since there is at least one every month. After New Year's it's only a couple weeks until Martin Luther King day, and in February there is President's Day and so on until December and then it starts all over again.

No one can predict the future. Many pundits fail to predict the popularity or lack of popularity of many electronic devices but would you call that a fallacy? People who believe in the Bible are no different than you believing in whatever you believe in (religious or non-religious) but non-believers have a good time making fun of the believers because of their faith and I'm not quite sure what is funny about that but I'm sure you have to laugh about something since you are going to hell, right? If you don't believe in that then you won't mind that statement because it is irrelevant to you. Anyway, the people who believe in the Bible are waiting to see the prophecies come true and since they don't know when or how they will they can only guess what will make them come true. Barcodes could have been the mark of the beast but I don't think there was any plan to use them on people. There is however many plans to use RFID tags on people (and some people already have them) and many pets have them. It could only be a matter of time before a gov't makes them mandatory for citizens and then it wouldn't be too far-fetched for a national leader (or the UN) to sign into law the requirement of the RFID tag before goods can be bought. I'm reminded of the movie Paycheck where the premise is that we try so hard not to do what our future predicts and yet we end up doing exactly what the future says we will even though we try to avoid it so the predictions ultimately still come true.

the real problem with the intelligent design crowd is when they deny basic facts

The real problem with the evolution crowd is when they don't provide any basic facts but have to speculate on everything with no definitive answers for anything. This article just proves that point because now they think that viruses may have been the start of life. How many more ideas are they going to go through? It doesn't ever get them any closer to making the theory any more sound. If evolution is real I have to wonder why one branch of the tree became so different compared to the other branches (humans to any other species). There should be a lot more similar variations of humans but there is only 1 type of human at that. There is a big divide between humans and any other species. The fact that the DNA structures are similar isn't enough to counter my statement because we are all on the same planet and live by the same general physical rules so the fact that DNA is similar isn't surprising nor does it imply anything. Human intelligence for example is far beyond any other species on earth.

So... Sure the cell phone makers make money by selling cheap ass phones to the providers who in turn give money directly to the manufactures, but the cell phone makers are competing with each other and in order to remain competative they are having to put more features on their phones.

They skipped right past being competitive by building more towers and increasing call quality. Where I live I can choose between CellularOne (which I have now), Sprint, US Cellular, nTelos, and I think that's about it. No one else has service here (North Central WV along I79). It would have been nice to have more choice of service, and phones (especially since you are stuck with one of the provider's phones unless you can get it unlocked and taken to another provider).

People don't want to carry 15 different devices when one can do the job of all good enough. Why is it some /.'ers can't understand that?

That is all well and good but the uber device should be a good single device before tackling other tasks (i.e. be a good phone with nice reception, durability, etc. before trying to be an mp3 player). Most, if not all, companies who make toaster ovens and who made toasters and/or ovens probably made sure that the toaster/oven was good quality and worked well before advancing to the next level of difficulty. Maybe you have a decent phone but what about the service with the phone? It's hard to find the perfect combo assuming that piece of heaven even exists yet in the cellular world.
