Why are patch releases being posted on Slashdot? If every patch release were posted on Slashdot, then there would be no space for other articles. That being said, why single out Diablo II? I could just as well send in an article about the Descent 3 1.4 patch, or at least, I could have, when it came out. Are we now going to get a Slashdot article where people can talk about how long they've waited for this patch to come out all the time? Surely there's better news than this.

Perhaps you will rate me as flamebait, though I assure you that this is not meant as such.

I have two things to say:

1)This is an incredibly silly argument.

2)Has anyone considered that if the renaming occurs, there will be a little grumbling, and then everything will be forgotten?

What I don't understand is why the Firebird Database organization feels threatened. It's not like they'll go out of existence if the name change occurs. Also, I have very little legal knowledge, but I thought that name overlap was alright if there was no ambiguity between the two. I may not be a good example of a normal person (evil grin), however I don't think I would ever have a problem telling a web browser from a database.

Ye gods, that's a lot of money. Consider that the United States is in debt by something around 3-4 trillion dollars. This is fifty times as much. With this amount of money, the RIAA could theoretically start buying up countries, one after another. However, I think it an understatement to say that no company can pay this. This is just another example of how the RIAA is trying to screw everyone else, and induce fear whenever their name is spoken. As far as I can tell, it's working.

Much as I agree with all of you, I must say that it seems you are all overreacting a bit. The Article Heading says "ongress to Make PATRIOT Act Permanent". Stricly speaking, this is not possible. Even if the PATRIOT Act becomes semi-permanent, I suppose we can only hope that it does get repealed relatively soon.

"If given the choice, I believe 99.99% of Americans would rather let an FBI agent rummage through their underwear drawer than die."
I think you're missing the point. I couldn't care less if an FBI agent came to my house and looked through my underwear drawer. All he'd find is a jar of Peanut Butter that I'm hiding there. There are very few things 99.99% of the American public would die for. You make it sound like people have a choice of dying, or giving up all their personal freedoms. This is a little unrealistic, if I may says so. However, I do care that the government is infringing on my rights as a citizen of the United States gathering information on me without my even knowing it. Am I willing to die instead of allowing this? Obviously not, but that is a ridiculous thing to suggest.

"Is the USA really worse for the Arab world today than the Ottoman Empire was a couple hundred years ago?"

Why are we there in the first place? Shouldn't we let them govern their own countries? What right do we have to be in the Arab countries in the first place? Is it our place to mother the rest of the world?

"(we "abandoned Afghanistan" after the Soviet invasion was pushed back, we "allow" people to starve in 3rd world nations)."

Granted, we abandoned Afghanistan, and I agree with you that that was wrong. However, it's not our fault that people in third world countries elect or declare corrupt leaders who usurp rule, and take everything that can be taken for themselves. What right do we have to possess overweaning arrogance and go to these countries and tell them what to do? None at all. We are not the world's policeman unless we chose to be, and then you cannot say it was forced upon you, because you chose to hold that position.

I never had this problem with my parents. They always trusted me, I'm pleased to say, however, I'm not here to discuss me. There are a million ways to get around this, such as ... leaving your phone at home, or turning your phone off. Now perhaps people will say that since they are kids, and most kids are irresponsible, this is a good thing to do. However:

"Rules are meant to be broken"
    -Some wise soul

I take for example spy software that my best friend's mother put on his computer. He wasn't computer savvy enough to bypass it, however, if I had had such software on my computer:

    1. I would hate my parents, and feel resentful towards them.
    2. I would do my best to bypass this with things that are available here.

Don't people realize that spying on your kids will only make them want to break the rules? If I knew that my parents were the type that would spy on me while I'm at school, then I would refuse to have a cell phone.

This seems to me to be something for overly paranoid and protective parents that think they can't trust their kids, and need to know at what second of the day their kids are doing anything.

Escape Velocity Classic works perfectly ... very fast. Escape Velocity Override works less well, and has some graphics issues with big ships. However, Escape Velocity Nova does not work. I think the reason is that most Emulators that I've heard of ar 68k emulators, and I believe that Escape Velocity Nova is based on a more modern architecture, unlike EV Classic. I'm not sure about Executor however. Basilisk II does use an authentic Macinosh Rom file (the website I got this from provided ROM files). That same site also gives instructions specially for Escape Velocity, if anyone is interested.

Unless I am radically mistaken, and it hasn't been released yet? Anyway, go watch this movie, it's absolutely fantastic.

I was a member of an Escape Velocity Classic/Override mailing list at one point, and when the announcement came that Escape Velocity Nova was coming out for Windows came, we had a big discussion about the morality of this decision. I was the only Windows user there (you can find instructions for an emulator here). Anyway, the consensus among the Mac users was that this was a bad idea. Their argument was that if Ambrosia started to make games for Windows, then they would realize that they were making much more money there, and decide to stick with Windows, and eventually give up on the Mac community. As I said, I am a PC user, and I am naturally biased in favor of porting to Windows. However, I do think that the Mac community needs to have some game creator that it can call its own. I suppose it all depends on how you feel about the issue.
