I would be much more impressed if they had hired someone from Google. MS needs some different thinkers and if they had hired someone from Google that would have been a coup and probably better for them as a company. They do appear overall to be changing for the better all be it at a glacial pace.
Someone from Yahoo! is fresh blood from outside the MS culture so at least it's a beginning.
Where I work I would NEVER replace the Windows desktops with Linux ones. People are too familiar with Windows and it IS a standard at least in that regard.
What I advocate, and do, is use Linux where it counts, the servers. Being a Perl developer I am always creating great apps that the MS people can't match in my establishment and I do it with the LAMP methodology (Linux/Apache/MySQL/Perl). Doing it cheaper and better is what keeps Linux there AND growing. Right now I am using Open Source to run a survey app collecting data via PDFs and backing it into the MySQL db. The alternative? Spending 60K to another contractor that wanted to use a MS solution.
I only see Linux growing where I am, especially now thatwe've started on a campaign to replace Solaris with Linux.
As long as we are having budget problems like every other agency we're going to up the Linux usage especially when we can do things like save 60K in one pop like this.
And here's a possible scenario....

Intuit notices that you trade a lot of stock. Merrill-Lynch agrees to pay Intuit.20 for every prospective customer lead given to them and will up it to.30 if they are not already a Merrill customer.
There's lotsa gold in them thar data mines.
CRS/GDS companies like SABRE/Worldspan/Apollo, etc do it all the time now. ( I worked for SABRE as a developer for several years )United Airlines gives SABRE a fee for every lead they give them for customers that have flown into ski resorts. More money per lead if these folks have done it more than one year. If they flew someone besides United, then United sends them a coupon for X% off their next flight to said ski resort destination city.
And who else pays for this data? Why the ski resorts themselves! Look for the trend and if you appear to be an outdoorsy type then maybe Jeep will send you a coupon for a special deal from one of their dealers.
If you're a foreign government and you're running everything on MS then your entire infrastructure is being controlled by a foreign power.
Doesn't matter how well MS wants to play it is already at a disadvantage in that regard.
Google is good about helping out good causes. NASA does use a TON of open source though so maybe M$ should do it. After all M$ runs ads in Linux magazines.
as Open Source spreads. The classic battle that people think of is M$ versus Linux but Sun is WAY easier to replace.
Hell I just did it with 2 boxes here in the military establishment I work for. Sun is so schizo about Open Source. The love it one day and hate it the next....
Historically everytime there has been a new technology there has been a "bubble" (You didn't think the internet bubble was the first bubble did you?
Money gets thrown in at a breakneck pace, there's a bubble for a few years and then KABOOM! Market implosion when reality finally hits.
Then after the smoke clears and the dust settles a new golden age begins followed by consolidation. I think it's safe to say that we are in consolidation mode now. Now is the time that the lasting 1600 pound gorillas get formed. Interactive Corp is one of those gorillas along with Ebay and Amazon.
No, here in Washington DC in the last year we have seen the launch of 2 free newspapers, dailies in fact. The Post's Express and the Examiner. Add that to the Citypaper and we have three.
in not being inhibited.
Many countries use the telephone system as a cash cow and as such, because there has been no competition, they have REALLY sub par POTS. VoIP would really cut into that revenue they generate from telephone calls making their government suffer.
In the US the telephone company really is the last big holdout in the great analog to digital migration. It doesn't make sense that I can chat with my friends halfway around the world on my PC but get totally reamed when I call home to talk to my Mom.
I just helped a charity switch to VoIP and now the biggest cost in their organization is now budgetable, they actually know how much they are going to pay each month.
a dangrous combination. But you can pretty much get all your movies, make an ISO to the hard disk and get 'em back to Netflix.
This is awesome if you want to convert the movie (using MPEG4 Direct Maker) later to run on a handheld device like an Archos AV.
Yeah I know,..totally not related but useful to know anyway.
is in part a bunch of Hooey.
They are attacked because they are vulnerable and buggy.
There are sevral products that dominate their respective areas that don't happen to be MS products and they are extremely secure compared to their MS counterpart. Like Apache....
"We are the subject of attacks because we're the biggest" is just so much horn blowing on the part of MS.
to YOU!
The fact that when you deposit a check in your account and the bank won't credit it immediately. You know what I'm talking about....when a bank will wait for five business days to credit your account even thought they got the money in about.75 seconds.
This is especially true now that Check 21 is in place.
Remember when Republicans were all about not getting involved state issues? (pre-Reagan) What happened is that they have discovered that it's so better to aggregate the power into the hands of the few via legislation and control the populace and impose "morality" that way.
Take the gay marriage issue. Should this REALLY be a federal issue? Of course not and thank heavens that Sen. McCain pointed out that such a federal law would interfere with "state's rights".
Federal anti-obscenity laws aren't any different. What doesn't play in Peoria could be considered as quite tame in NYC.
Expanding on the honeypot idear, it probably wouldn't be tough to create a Perl script using the LWP mods to grab the most popular song/movie titles every week and just automate this process.

We are quite saturated with free news.

Lazarus? Really? Special Agent Jesus? By definition he should be able to resurrect the server and dole out retribution.
