If you had took the time to read the article, you would have realised that they offer 70% of what the game will generate in revenue.
If the game do not sell, LGP is the only one loosing money. If it sells, BOTH the developers and LGP will earn money.
They are offering peoples the opportunity to write a game for Linux.
That's great in my opinion, even if the developers do not get paid.
I mean, no one ever got paid for creating Tux Racer? Are do they?
So, they don't get paid, but LPG offers to pay for the publishing AND the marketing.
In doing so, they encounter the risk of LOOSING money.
If the title do not sell well, THEY will lost money, not the developers.
BUT, they also state that they will give 70% of the money made out of selling the game and keep the remaining to pay for the afore mentionned publishing/marketing cost.
How can people see this as wrong is beyong my understanding.
Peoples work on project for free because they like it, for fun, to learn, etc. etc. and no one complains about it.
Now, a company offers those same people the chance to make money out of this work and all you can say is that they are bad?
As much as I like the free software community, at times I have much troubles understanding what all of you value so much.
Is it really "free speech" and "alternatives" or is it ONLY "free as in beer"?!?
Have you considered installing a mini-itx board?
They are VERY small board with every thing integrated onto it.
They are made by VIA and are actually quite cheap!
When you will be dead, that you had many friends won't matter either. You will be dead!
The only thing which matter in life is to love yourself the way you are.
If having a lots of friends and party all nite is your way of feeling good, that's allright, but if someone else feels good by finding out why libDV won't compile, that's fine to by my book.
Maybe you should read a bit of the work done by Arthur Schopenhauer. He had great ideas about what exactly is the purpose of "social interactions".
In short, he said that the sole purpose of interacting with others is to make yourself feel better, the sole purpose of it is so you can compare yourself and try to demonstrate that you are not that dumb. The sole purpose of it is for ENTERTAINMENT But, I'm not aggreeing 100% on that, he said that the only way to find happiness is to first be able to live alone, with yourself, then, you would not need NO BODY to live a happy life.
I know he was kind of anti-social, but he had great tought none the less and I try to live on this principle since I read that. Be in peace with myself, accept what I am and live with it. Then, if I can find some peoples with which I can share my experience, great! otherwise, I can do fine without anyone.
By the way, I do not have ten's of friends anymore, only a handfull. But today I know that those friends are REAL friends, not just people who will hang around with me because I'm cool, I will make them smoke drugs for free and because they think that my girlfriend has nice ass. I can count on the few real friends I have no matter what, and that sir, brings me a lot more then partying all nite with "friends" which don't give a shit about who I really am. I also have a girlfriend with who I can share anything without fearing that she migth run away because I'm not "good enough" for her.
And you know what, when I'm gone, I won't bring ANYTHING of all that with me. So better live my life the way I WANT to live it, because in the end, 100 years after my death, no body will remember me anyway.
Contributing to the society? Yeah sure, so I CAN live a better life. Society is just a way of sharing the workload so everyone can benefit from it. No more, no less. It's simply parallel processing:-)
By the way, I'm not anti-social or anything. I'm just realistic.
But, could they be used in some way as the powerplant for an hybrid vehicle? The "generator" do not have to accelerate quickly, just run consistently. But then, I'm not an engineer anyway...
I bougth my DVD player at my local Wallmart (a Zenith)and it has DVD AND VHS built into the same unit. Pretty usefull for now as I like the advantage of DVD's but can't afford to lose the recording ability of the VHS yet...
Would it not be usefull to have available a graph of the visited links along with or instead of the foward and back button?
You could have a popup window or something which would display thumbnails of all visited pages in a "linked" way. You could then select the thumbnail to wich you want to get back. It could also, maybe, display a list of all links (a href) in a given pages and some other informations...
And, something I would really love as a feature, persistence of this history. There is already an "history" of the typed URLs, but most of the time, I search in Googles and click thru the links to get where I want, so a back/forward button history would really make my day!
I was listening to the movie "A beautifull mind" yesterday, and I was asking myself:
Ain't the benefits of OSS going along the lines of John Nash theory?
Everyone benefits from collaboration...
This is not a troll, I don't know John Nash's theories at all, only saw the movie, but seems to fit...
Soon enough, many of you are going to be ingesting many litters of cheap wine, beer and turkey. This will be a time of disappointment for everyone when you will open your gift and realize that the dream of this so incredibly l33t Zaurus handheld has vanished and instead materialized into YAFCCD (yet another f**cking Christmas CD) or even YAFWPOFYM (yet another f**cking wool pullover from your mother). You will also have to face many long hours, politely explaining to your uncle (formerly referred to as Joe User) that you wont fix is computer again this year, scratching your head to find the absolute words which will instead make is mind focus on nagging your 18 years old blonde cousin, the one which you think about while you wan.... Well you know what I mean. You will also have to tell your old grandma that you are not at school anymore and that no, you don't have a girlfriend yet and that no, you are not gay. To undergo the assaults of all your aunts telling you that you are fatter then last year will be just unbearable. You will suffer, it will be hard. You will want to turn back, swearing you won't come back next year. On the way to uncle "Joe user" house, you will see numerous wooden Santa Claus on the top of almost all houses, representing the originality of each and everyone in this O so wonderful world at this time of the year.
Yes fellows, those will be hard times. But fear not! Remember that you are not alone. We, as a community must virtually hold each others because only united will we survive! When in despair, sit back for a while and try to remember all the wonderful duplicate stories you had the chance to read over here. Think about all those amazing flame wars you fought. Remember all the great typos and think about the ones in needs, because in Soviet Russia, spell checkers are correcting you. Take 3. 2. 1. step back and profit brothers because this is our destiny. Remember all those boring Friday afternoon when you got modded down as Troll for posting a link to this real gem, this unique piece of art. I look forward to bash The Beast (tm) with you again my friends, pursuing this never ending quest which is to bitch about any conceivable companies, lawyers, governments, laws, closed source software, or anybody which does not approve what we say, from our theological ideas to our rocket science knowledge passing by our insatiable appetite for pushing new, novel ways of compressing porn.
Yes fellows, together we can make it, together we can survive away from our keyboards. Keep the faith and go thru it like a real geek, in the most profound slashdotter spirit. I hope this is only the beginning, that many will come and join us. I hope that this tradition will find its way thru time as years and century pass by, long after I will no longer be, when all my lines of code will have vanished to/dev/null, that my body will have rotten since a long time and that my soul, the one and only, which gave me the power to procrastinate all day long at your side on the great highway of informations will have disappear from the memories of the two or three persons who coincidently happens to know me, I hope that this tradition will still remain; as a mark of our passage, of our endless sense of getting nowhere soon.
Sincerely, deep from my disturbed mind,
Happy Holydays.
Sun refusing to standardize Java is really not the same has Sun told MS "f*ck you", isn't it?
First of all, I am myself a Java programmer and sometimes I feel that the Java openness could be better. But it is already pretty much open. The JCP has many many participant and if the community wish to have a certain feature included, it will.
Now, look at it the other way around. If java was to be submitted to a standard body, just like MS C# ant the CLR. Nobody would have the control over how they will implement it. If it had been the case back to the day of the first Sun-MS trial, Sun could never have sued Microsoft and we would have a MS java which would have probably took over the world because it would have been bundled with the OS. Yes, I would like to see java to be open source. But I also feel a bit more secure to know that a Big corp can defend it if another company tries to screw it up.
maybe, but today, with everything featuring a nice GUI,
you won't grab their attention if it's not "cute".
Maybe introducing them to something like gnome and kde and then, afterwards, introducing them to bash
would be a more interesting path for them.
I myself started on a TRS-80, which had no GUI. But the first few application I typed in there were still the one doing something "flashy" with some cool beep beep.

Butterfly is not a Sony product, it's a company name.
They developed a grid computing architecture, backed by IBM.
Sony is a customer in this case.
Take a look at this press release:

With 1.5 Tb of available space, I swear i won't compress my music to MP3! it would be like compressing a 10 K file today which is stored on 40GB hd...

My belly is the proof.
They only have to require that you pass all of your exams in an accredited center.
Just like they do for almost all certifications.
