    Sigh...
B5 was really good in some places, really not good in other places. Firefly had 12 episodes, four of which I saw which were not entertaining whatsoever and Farscape never seemed to catch my interest, even though I love Sci-Fi and the Muppets. Personally, I liked Lexx, as insane as it was, more than any other of the aforementioned series.

The best Sci-Fi series EVER, would have to be Dr. Who. Dr. Who was doing EVERYTHING before EVERYONE else and has the best villains ever. Heck, Dr. Who even invented "The Matrix" in 1978, thanks to Douglas Addams. Also, Dr. Who was voted the most popular Sci-Fi show EVER by T.V. guide readers a few years back and is (once it comes back on the air in 2005) the longest running sci-fi show ever.

Also, ever Buffyverse/Firefly worshipper NEEDS to get "Blakes 7" on dvd to show them how a show like Firefly should be done properly. Blakes 7 is next to Dr.Who as one of the best Sci-fi shows ever made. It's finale in 1982 still holds records for one of the most watched BBC programs ever.

If you live in western civilization you more than likely already have a cell phone and home phone and a dsl/cable line. Regardless if the whole f'ing industry goes wireless, someone still has to own the towers, or phone lines, or fiber optic lines, and you will end up paying a tax or "fee" in the end to use those services. I have seen some of my friends drop their home phone lines for just DSL and cell phone service, but they still don't use VOIP. Besides, in regards to 911 calls, WTF happens if your computer is off and you need to make a call because your house is on fire, or their is a bugular in the house? Wait for it to boot up and THEN have to deal with the retarded 911 operator via a shitty VOIP connection, with no real way to trace your call?

Nobody today beats their kids anymore, and I'm not talking about abuse. I am the person who I am today because when I was bad, my ass got beat. I was beat by the nuns, the brothers of the sacred heart, my mom and dad, uncles, etc. I deserved to get beat, and it put the fear of God into me. It takes a cold blooded person to pick up a CLAW HAMMER and beat someone to death. The lack of fear, or consequences is one of main contributing factors to this murder, not GTA. I have to also put the blame on the parents. A lot of parents today are "ghosts" and you can't let your kid run free without any checks or balances and expect him/her to not turn out maligned. Still, it takes a ruthless bastard to kill someone with a friggin' hammer.

Just look at the copy protection on some dvds, it actually degrades the quality of the music in a lot of cases. I don't really care about DRM, as long as they come up with some way of not A) screwing the consumer and B) doing something about the DRM affecting the quality.

Put simply, we gave Saddam 18 months of dipomacy, he ignored it, WTF is the president to think after 9/11 when a ruthless dictator refuses to let inspectors into verify the existence of WMD, after an attack on the USA? It's Saddam's fault for being so stupid and arrogant. If he let the Weapons inspectors in, none of this would have happenned. Having a prescence in Iraq is not a bad thing right at this moment. Iran is actively pursuing a Nuke program and essentially telling the world "F.U." If we were not so hopelessly bogged down with Iraq, we should just invade Iran. 16. Old news, new news on Movie Distribution Via Satellite · · Score: 4, Informative

The studios and the theater owners have been trying to iron the electronic "distribution" problem since 1999, when Episode One came out and Lucas started his push to digital cinema. There was talk that Episode 2/3 would be ONLY availible to cinemas who were all digital. Honestly, there is no reason for the cinemas to "upgrade" to digital anything yet. There are no set standards and anything that is purchased now will be totally obsolete in less than five years. I think the studios are looking at the digital age as a double edged sword. Sure they will save a lot of money by not having to actually distribute and make prints, but they also lose total control over the theaters choice of films. The biggest hurdle of being a filmmaker, even in the digital age, is the dreaded print. You can shoot on video all day long, but if you want to show it in most theaters, you gotta stike a print, which can cost upward $35,000 or more.

"Digital" for the theater is -almost- there. There needs to be a standard for exhibition of digital films that is locked in stone. The current projectors, while good, still look like good video projectors. The actual distribution is almost a non-issue. There are numerous ways of encrypting/securing the data for transmission to the respective theaters. Even the much balyhooed MPEG2 encryption was not broken till a (very smart) teenager found the keys left open by a careless person.

The projector and decoder unit would have to be linked/hardwired, so a univeral standard of security would have to be implemented, no matter who made the projector.

As much as I love film, it's time is up. Winding 5 foot diameter spools of film through a projector seems almost caveman like :)

  18. No way San Jose! on PSP Pricing Announced · · Score: 2, Insightful

Look, the PSP will cost Sony about $100 bucks to manufacture, or most likely less, since a lot of the tech is borrowed from PS3 developments. The most expensive "development" on the entire PSP would be the UMD drive. I doubt Sony will offer the PSP for $149, as the Japanese pride issue comes into play; they know that the PSP is better, why should they have to price it as the same as the DS? $250 would be the max price for this system at launch and that would be reasonable. If Sony was smart, they would launch at $199. If Sony would launch the PSP with a $300 price range, they will doom the system to just "status symbol" status, that it will never recover. The PSP is a conundrum; it is essentially a portable PS2 without the PS2's games. Also, if Sony launches at a rediculous price point, then developers will drop like flies.

For once video piracy has a positive effect. I bought the HK bootleg dvd several years ago, but I already owned several versions of the SW trilogy on Laserdisc, let alone the countless vhs tapes I still have. In effect, Lucas has given free reign to pirates to pirate the original trilogy (unenhanced) for good. Lucas himself has said that the original trilogy does not exist anymore, thus giving free reign to copy it. If he really did push up the release of the original trilogy because of piracy, then he did it for the wrong reasons.

People will buy the Star Wars Trilogy FOREVER, no matter what formats come after DVD. In 2020, people will buy the "Holovision" version of the Trilogy, just as many bought the dvds today.

I can agree with Lucas' decision to "enhance" the trilogy to his original vision, but to deny the release of the original versions, just because he is stubborn is just him being a prick.

  24. Stupid plot on Sky Captain and the Films of Tomorrow · · Score: 1

Not much actually occurs in "Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow," So I will be as brief as possible. The movie starts off with a blimp docking in "Gotham" city and a scientist giving a written message to a flight attendant, upon which the scientist vanishes, but not before showing off some rather bland looking "vials," thus foreshadowing their importance. The note lands in the hands of the reporter Polly Perkins who starts her investigation of the missing scientists. She is contacted by one of the scientists and she meets him in a showing of "The Wizard of Oz," and tells her vague plans of an supposedly abadoned project run by a Dr. Totenkopf . He leaves in a hurry and of course forgets his super important killer robot blueprints. Then, of course, said killer GIANT robots attack the city, apparently for the city's generators. Sky Captain is called and he shows up in his spitfire-esque plane and manages to "kill" one of the Giant Robots and save Polly Perkins. The Giant killer robot is taken to Sky Captain's base, which just happens to convieniently be right outside the city. There we meet Dex Dearborn, super nerd, the guy who obviously builds all of SC's cool gadgets. Dex is trying out his cool new ray gun, which melts through a foot of steel with ease. Then we have to listen to the obilgatory "ex-lovers spat" between Polly and SC. They decide to try and find the scientist who dropped his plans for the killer robots in the theater. They find him, but not after the "asian looking" assassin gets to him first. The assassin escapes and before the scientist dies he tells him of the plans and gives Polly the same two vials from the start of the movie. Of course, being a dumbass, she hides them from SC. Then new flapping-flying-killer-robots attack Sky Captain's base. Dex has figured out that one of the robots is receiving a signal for it's masters and tries to track it down. Of course Dex has to take his time while SC flies throughout the city trying to avoid being killed to try and buy time, all the time with Polly prattling on like a backseat driver. Then, Smaller, killer robots with tentacle like arms attack Dex and he melts one with his ray gun, which is knocked away and he is subdued, but he still manages to rip out the page of the map he wrote the location of the transmission and sticks for SC to find, which is in the Tibetan mountains. SC's plane is damaged in the preceeding melee with the flapping-flying-killer-robots and has to enlist the help of Angelina Jolie's character "Franky" and her "Flying Fortress." Of course, the flapping-flying-killer-robots find the "Gi Joe" inspired flying aircraft carrier and attack it. Now even though the flapping-flying-killer-robots obliterated Sky Captain's base and just about everything else in their path, they mysteriously don't manage to destroy the Flying Fortress, go figure. Sky Captain refuels and is on his way and then lands somewhere in Tibet. There he meets his Arab?! friend in the frozen wilderness and two menacing looking asian guides who allude that they are up to no good. SC and Polly and the Arab guy and guides go to the source of the transmission deep in the mountains. There they find a Mega Factory which looks to be long since abandoned. There, they are betrayed by the asian guides who steal the vials that Polly was carrying and lock SC and Polly in a vault with a Loony Toones size of dynamite (watch that scene and don't tell me you don't think of Yosemite Sam lighting a match in the dark, which turns out to be a room filled of dynamite). Of course their Arab friend reappears just in time to open the vault door and have all three pull a "Die Hard" running away from a huge fireball and escaping with only scratches. All three wake up in a bed naked, being cared for by monks. They are in Shangri-La/Eden and they find out that Dr. Totenkopf is the guy behind it all. The monks are pist that a lot of them died in slavery working at the killer robot factory and one monk who was melted by the radiation in the mines tells Sky Captain to put him out of his misery.
