AVP is a prime example of abuse of the PG-13 rating by a major studio. AVP was shot as an "R" rated film, but the studio, at the last second, decided to cut the film to a PG-13, so the younger crowd could get into see it, and make more money. To me, they ruined the film by doing this. Thankfully, they did not cut Freddy vs. Jason to a PG-13, yet it still was the number one movie that week and made a lot of money. Hollywood has long since lost it's segregation in regards to ratings. Instead of making kid films, teenager films and adult films, the studios are making "all in one" films that just about everyone can see.
I don't understand WHY Google IPO'ed. It's not exactly they needed the money. Well, at least it's not like Yahoo, which went from.42 cents a share to $42.00 a share overnight for doing NOTHING. Google is at least useful and will remain top of the search engine heap for at least a couple of years. There is always someone else who comes along that's better. Remember when HOTBOT was the hottest thing since sliced bread?
When I moved to California, where air conditioners are rare in most places, I first encountered a "chiller" which works (suppossedly) by using "cold" water run through coils instead of coolant. Well, it did not work at all. Then again, we don't have really friggin' cold water here either.:)
Anyhoo, any "saved" Mega-Watts by this project will be sucked up by us, as in the U.S.
I am curious as to where the water from this project goes after it is used. Obviously, the cool water used can only be used once.
Oh, I'm sorry, should I have said that "JAVA is Great!" When it has caused me so much trouble in the past. Fuck, you can't say anything negative or TRUE about anything on Slashdot without being modded a troll.
Java Sucks, and I'm not trolling. Everything and anything Java has caused me great pain over the years; system crashes, program crashes, etc. Ebay was using Java pop ups for their system till it became such a bother for the users and Sys Admins, that they simply just got rid of it.
Much like Atari, somebody bought the rights to commodore's name and is now making a product that has little or nothing to do with the original's spirit or function.
What sucks, is that "Big Name" companies, like Playboy have already got suckered into licensing the "technology." The Defense Lawyers really need to start attacking these patent claims. It's really getting tiresome that everyone and their grandma is trying to patent THINGS THAT ALREADY EXIST and then sue other people. Sigh...
If Microsoft was smart, they would PAY for the equipement, tools, software, necessary for development of XBOX2 games. In a way, they HAVE to. The article is right, what company is going to spend the years (and substantial cash) creating games for a system that has not proven itself.
My mobo has 5.1 audio built in as well as an optical digital output. I tried to use/"upgrade" to the top of the line soundblaster, but it crashed my computer over and over again, till I removed it. I don't use computer speakers, but a 500 watt amp and real speakers. Very rarely does any game take advantage of my setup, but conversly, my XBOX takes full advantage of the 6.1 setup in the main room. As does the Gamecube.
The problem with computer audio, is the flexibility problem; always designed to accomodate the lowest common denominator. Most people have the same two crappy speakers that came with their computer. On the other hand, I can now get a good 500 watt home theater system with a powered subwoofer for less than $300. Needless to say, most people are not going to spend $300 for a good set of computer speakers and another $100-200 on good sound card, just for their computer, but they will for their dvd player/tv.
Funny how nobody can say anything negative about anything on slashdot without being labelled a troll. Java has crashed my computer for the past several years, and now it's crashing my cellphone. Either there are a lot of sucky Java Coders, or the language itself sucks.
I'm glad in 2004 there are still arcade games out there that are using the 1994 "Revolution, starring Aerosmith"- technology. Well, at least SOMEONE is still making arcade games. I am sick of seeing the same games everytime I goto any arcade. I don't know how "Dave and Busters" et al, stays in business.
Paypal can attempt to take money out of your bank account, but the CANNOT freeze your bank account. They are not a bank and have no authority to do anything.
This is a very interesting gamble for Nintendo. On one hand, the GB advance really does not need a replacement yet. It is still the top selling handheld. With Sony's handheld at/above $200, it clearly is not going to take the market by storm. Most people are either at work, or at home. If I am at home, I have several game systems to choose from, and then I have to screw around on the internet and play games on my pc too. I really am not interested in a console "replacement" for "on the go" gaming.
Apparently you have not yet been vicitmized by pp, like the hundreds of thousands of people that reported paypal to the bbb, good for you. Paypal, prior to their IPO, went through and limited a lot of high dollar accounts to make it look like they had more cash than they really did. They ruined a lot of businesses that put their trust in pp.
Ebay's has two very big problems. It has grown beyond the ability to effectively police itself. Also, it has integrated way too many things into the eBay system. It's hard to maintain "We're just a 'marketplace," since eBay collects fees from paypal and ebay for processing the auction and processing the payment. It would be very easy for a judge (especially in a tort crazy state like Mississippi) to levy a judgement against eBay/paypal.
What irks/scares me, is the fact that eBay and Paypal share ALL of your personal information with each other. They can cross check your bank account numbers, credit card numbers and your personal info. Plus, since paypal requires so much personal info (way more than a bank does), I shudder at the possibility of my accounts on ebay and/or paypal getting hijacked, or Paypal getting hacked. I guess what is scary, is the fact that eBay has more info on it's sellers and buyers, than most banks do on their customers. Plus Paypal outsources their "customer service" department to India.
Lastly, if anyone has never been to www.paypalsucks.com or www.paypalwarning.com it's surely an eye opener. Paypal has always been, and will always be the achilles heel for eBay. The overzealous "limiting" of accounts, lack of true "seller protection," and the good old "Your account access has been limited, check back with us in ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DAYS, and you might get your money out of your paypal account."

Whats with the 1400x900 screen res? How good is the lcd going to perform when it has to scale to another resolution? At least on the dell you have true HDTV resolution on a smaller screen. I love the custom paint jobs offerred, but how much? Their "american flag" job costs almost $250.
Pop up ads are annoying as fuck, but what pisses me off more than anything else is that most ad servers are slow as fuck and a lot of websites are coded to load the ads FIRST, then the site. I paid for "ads free" version of mail.com, because their ads were so damn annoying, only to find that every time I log on, I have to wait 10 seconds from the fucking banner ad on the main page to load before I can login. Goto www.darkhorizons.com and see what I mean, wasted time.
Really, Mutant X was beyond horrid and Andromeda had some good moments, but both were shitty in just about every aspect. But, this brings up an interesting topic; what is left to watch that is "Sci-Fi?" Stargate? Enterprise? What else? I am so beyond glad that the best Sci-fi show EVER is coming back, Dr. Who of course!
Jeez, where do they find these guys to write these "insightful" computer articles these days? Wal-Mart? Computer gaming has always been a really expensive endeavor. I upgraded my computer every two years and it was really freakin' expensive to do so. Now, what cost me $3,000 every two years, now costs $1,500. But now, computer power is actually getting upstripped by the 3d cards. The new Nvidia chip has 222 million transitors! Prices have not changed much in the 3d accelerator department over the past 8 years. If you wanted the baddest 3DFX card it cost your almost $400, if not more. Now a card that is ifinintely more powerful costs just about the same. Gamers are gamers. I own all of the game systems and have a pretty powerful pc. If you build it (the games) they will come:)
The town is located in a Valley Called "Val Demons." Honestly, I can't think of any natural reason why electronis would spontaneously combust. Shit, even things that are unplugged are blowing up. Yah, that's "natural."
Well, I don't think that valve is going to screw up it's golden goose. The videos I have seen of HL2's gameplay are amazing; groundbreaking in every area. Coupled with the fact that it's built around a solid narrative piece, I can't see how, or where it will fail. Don't forget the mod community. Counterstrike gave the original HL an extra few years of profitibility where none might have not existed, and Valve has stated that they will fully (and smartly) support the mod community for HL2. In comparsion, one of the newer final fantasy games cost well over $30 million to make. Valve's portfolio accounts for over 8 million retail units sold worldwide, and over 88 percent of the online action market. That's pretty f'ing good numbers! Just a FYI, the movie "Mona Lisa Smile" cost $65 million to make and $25 million to market. Essentially costing what "Return of the King" cost to make! In the end MLS made enough to break even. ROTK made well over a billion. All the R and D in the world won't help you, if you are researching how to make crap.

I am curious if the "virtual girlfriend" can "virtually" stand you up? :)

Me PC user mad that mac user smarter den me! Me angry that mac user look cool with titanium powerbook! Damn mac user get all da women!
Last time I checked, the portable Master System came out almost a decade ago; it's called a GAME GEAR! :)

Yah, "present day" Java may be the bee's knees, but I cannot forgive it for it's slow-loading-lock-lock-up-my-computer- past.
