  1. $40 million, drop in the bucket on Half-Life 2's Technical Details, Cost Estimates · · Score: 3, Interesting

Get real, $40 million dollars is chump change today. $40 million dollars spent on RandD and development for HL2 is a sound investment. HL2 IS the reason why I upgraded to a new pc earlier than I would have. Unfortunately, I was not expecting it to be delayed almost a half a year, or more. But really, in retrospect, nothing has happenned dramatically in terms of computing power over the past year. We went from having 3.0 ghz processors to 3.4 "hyper" processors. 9700 radeons to 9800 radeon pro turbos. It's almost like the industry is in a holding pattern waiting for HL2 to be released! :) For what HL2 will bring to the table, it's worth $500 million in my book. :)

  2. Venture Capital on Infinium Targets Gamers For Stock Purchase After Split · · Score: 3, Insightful

Hmmm, I was thinking. $120+ Million in Venture Capital is absolutely nothing in terms of what is necessary to produce AND more importantly PROMOTE a brand new game system. Shit, some of the higher end games cost $40 million to make and market. Even if the "Phantom" had access to EVERY GAME EVER MADE, who would buy it? After all, you never actually own any game, it's all downloaded. I would actually invest my money in a pinball manufacturer right now (sales are doing great) than bet on the Phantom.

Has the Slashdot editors gone on a vacation. It seems that more and more of these idiotic articles are being posted on Slashdot. Germans are better at teamwork? Americans better at shooting? Nobody can tell what nationality they are playing against unless it is posted, or a clan that they know is in a different country. I was expecting the article to say something stupid like "Teams don't like to have black people in them, because they slow the whole team down," or "You can tell when you are playing against Jews, because they are using handguns and saving their money for better weapons someday." On the brink of the dreaded "racism," the article almost is. Lastly, the FRENCH has better reflexes than other players? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH A x 10

It really is rediculous that Lucasarts is compromising themselves for profit/costs reasons. Too bad Lucas can't put ILM and Lucasarts together (that would make too much sense). As for the quote "It's not a good time to release an adventure game." Well, neither was it suppossedly a good time to release "Star Wars," but look how well that did!

  15. Pointless Article on Are Modern Games Too Easy? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Are there easy games out there today? Yes. Are today's games "easier" than yesteryear's games? No. Why? It's like comparing apples and oranges. Games of the golden years were designed around the 'arcade' mindset, giving the player a fun time, but making it hard enough so that they would have to keep putting their quarters in. Home systems, up to the release of the nes, were just platforms for people to play ARCADE games on, which by their very nature, designed with an (usual) high curve of difficulty. Also, if you were around at the time of the original pitfall you have, oh, almost TWENTY FIVE YEARS of experience with videogames by now and should be much, much, better than you were back then. Personally, I miss the old arcade days, those were really great times. It was great to grow up concurrently with the entire development of videogames and playing videogames back in the 80's was great, but I personally welcome the "movie style" videogames. In a way, it's what I've always wanted out of videogames; to be like interactive movies. Games like the new Pitfall and Tomb Raider are easy because the designers decided to tread the same path that's already been done, over and over. You already know what to do, where to look and how to beat it! A lot of games today just suck, it has nothing to do with difficulty. BUT, I do not want to go back to the days of incredible difficulty to make up for bad gameplay. I destroyed the 2600 cart "DragonFire" because it was too fucking hard and became the antithesis of fun. I also destroyed "Ghost's and Goblins"; a good game, but hard, but after beating it you find out that you have to beat the entire game AGAIN at a much harder difficulty to truly win. Fuck that, Ghosts and Goblins has been "sleeping with the fishes" ever since. :)

  19. What a fucking useless article on Stores Neglecting Old Videogame Packaging? · · Score: 1

This has to be the worst post ever on slashdot and no, I am not trolling. It's not even a story it's a whine. So, retailers are now responsible for destroying videogame history? Why has it become retailers who are burdened with old stock and/or trading games to make sure the cases are present and in fantastic condition. We're not talking about Infocom games which had elaborate packaging and lots of goodies, we're talking about N64 and Genesis games! Get real. The only people who care about packaging would be anal retentive collectors who use the fact that the game has it's original packaging to drive up the price. Nobody cares anymore about packaging, or cases anymore. The only reason I even have any of my cases for my computer or home system games is to prevent the games from getting scratched. I am not concerned about the packaging and most people are not either. Whenever I buy a cd now I download the music to my hard drive and THROW AWAY THE CASE and put the cd in my cd jukebox.
