JPEG is an open standard and turned out to be (perhaps) patent poisoned. What makes you so sure that Ogg Vorbis won't have the same problem down the line? Just because there's some OSS code floating around for it now doesn't mean that nobody's sitting on a patent they won't someday try to enforce. The existence of an OSS implementation means nothing in that arena.
The beta version for OSX that was just released actually seems to be fairly well-behaved. It comes as a single "bundle" that you just drop into the Applications folder, without having to run an installer that craps all over everything. I don't know if it has any spyware or not, but I haven't noticed any so far. They're probably saving that for the "gold" version.:-)
Is it really logically impossible for both the Archos and the iPod to be good? In order to feel good about your decision, is it necessary that all other possibilities suck? I have an iPod and I like it, a friend has an Archos and he likes that. Maybe they are both nice pieces of hardware? Nah, couldn't be...
...and then they can tell all of their clients, "You must install Linux and this pre-alpha Sourceforge conferencing project, otherwise we can no longer do business with you." Yep, easy as pie.
To whatever extent Microsoft is worried about Linux, that worry is confined to the server room where WINE is not an issue. Nobody would use WINE to run IIS or SQL Server on Linux, they'd use a native application instead. Linux+WINE replacing Windows for general desktop use is not really a legitimate threat.
The last time I tried iCab it didn't do "Nested" mode right, the posts were indented only a tiny amount so you couldn't see the threads easily. My favorite browser for reading Slashdot is definitely Chimera Navigator. Check it out at chimera.mozdev.org, highly recommended.
It's in Quicktime because Apple is the one doing it. If you'd rather have another format you should pay to license the trailer, set up your own big server and high-bandwidth connection, and stream it however you want. In the meantime, quit complaining about what Apple is giving you for free.
Congratulations on your development of a page-widener that works in Mozilla. It's not even obvious that you're the one doing it. Adding it to a reasonably on-topic post was a nice touch.
I think a lot of Americans (like myself) have a hard time with the idea that in soccer the best team doesn't always win. Because goals are so rare, a single fluky play or bad linesman call can change the outcome, whereas in basketball for example you have tons of chances to overcome a bad break. You can turn that around, though, and say that it makes the games more exciting since there is always a chance for a miracle. Just look at the NBA finals this year, what could possibly have been duller than that? I thought the World Cup was really enjoyable to watch this time around, although it's got a long way to go before it passes baseball in my affections.
You should probably check up on the facts first, this being Slashdot and all. The article which was linked doesn't mention anything about the EULA being changed for this update, it was just the first time that person bothered to read it. The business about it being changed was added by the story submitter, and in typical Slashdot fashion the editors didn't bother to verify it in any way. Nobody has corroborated that the EULA has actually changed from the one which was originally attached to WMP7, which leads me to believe that this is another tempest in a teapot.
Will we get a review of IBUC by Stephen Spielberg tomorrow?

I'm not saying any such thing. You said that it was after the judge made a determination on the facts of the case that Padilla was transferred, and the very CNN story you linked to says that's not what happened. The judge hasn't made any ruling of any kind, and is not even sure if he can.

I don't think your facts are correct. Padilla was arrested May 8, but the arrest was not disclosed until June 12, after he had already been transferred to a military prison. This transfer was never approved by the judge as you imply, in fact the Justice Dept claims that the judicial system has no say in the matter whatsoever. Your combination of poor fact-checking and vitriolic name-calling leads me to believe that you have been listening to too much talk radio. That stuff is bad for you, turn it off and stop being so angry.

The ending was totally laughable I thought. Because some presumably small fraction of the time an innocent person may be convicted, the sage citizenry abandon the system as unjust? Keep in mind, we're talking about a system that prevented every murder but one over a five year period! Nevertheless, people would give it up because the creator was a bad guy, and it's better to just let murders happen rather than for one man to be wrongly convicted. Yeah, that sounds a lot like the America I live in...
Thank you for proving my point. The entry is about Pink outselling Weezer. I guess if you read between the lines you might infer that he's allegorically referring to his own record, but I usually go by what people actually say rather than performing amateur psychoanalysis on them. If you want to foam and the mouth and call him evil just because Slashdot says so, though, I guess that's your prerogative.
I'm pretty sure this is the first time Michael Dell has ever been called a "hippy". :-) What does that make Ted Waitt?

Actually, OS X does the /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin thing pretty much the same way as any other unix I've seen. The original poster is confused.
I think I'll support musicians who make music that I like, even if their politics aren't always in lockstep with Slashdot. Is that okay?
Ha, shows how much YOU know! I've never even BEEN to Rochester, let alone cruised it in an IROC. So there!
You can find an AP story about that speech here. Still one of the all-time great self-immolations.
I still wear a gold analog wristwatch, but that's because I'm an ape who likes shiny things.

Aha! Here is our widener! Let's see if Slashdot will fix it now that it affects their beloved Mozilla.

Lower Haight totally kicks ass. I can't believe I moved away to lame-ass Michigan. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Spam should use this in their ads: "Even less palatable than canibalism!"
Of course, that's assuming that every single person buys a Windows PC. I take it you're in Marketing?
