  1. It angers me.. on Bill Gates Calls for a 'Kinder Capitalism' · · Score: 4, Insightful

To see that things have gotten so bad in the world that all I see here is cynicism and trolling. Yes, it is true a lot of us do not like Microsoft, for whatever reason (I find myself ambivalent but there you go). Yes Bill is worth billions. No, we won't change the world overnight, but for fucks sake, what has he got to gain from this? One of the most rich men in the world, he could quite easily say 'fuck it' put his feet up and do NOTHING - I don't think guilt is the real issue here. The fact that he is saying something, not to mention the amount of money his and his wifes' foundation has given away over the years (billions of dollars) surely accounts for something. If he has been clever enough to create the leviathan that is Microsoft, he might, just might, have some influence that could help us all change the shithole we are currently living in to something with some hope. But for fuck's sake lets not shoot the guy down in flames for it until we can prove he is in it to feather his own nest After almost 9 years on /. I'm getting pretty fucking sick of the attitudes round here - too many fucking smart arses and not enough people willing to think about anything more than how much free software they deserve or how they'll never pay for music because its not worth it* . but I feel pretty strongly about this. (* seriously - someone on here today valued it at 4 cents a track. If it is that bad, donate your ears to someone who could use them buddy). Bunch of moaning fucking ingrates. Set mod to troll.

Edge and Games TM, both UK publications from different publishers, are well worth seeking out a subscription for. Both are very well written and appear to be without bias, I would thoroughly recommend either of them as they are both designed well (Edge beautifully so) and have a much more mature side to them then many of the XBox/Ps3/Ninty Official etc mags out there. Also, flick through Edge and you will find very few game ads in there - their main ad revenue appears to come through ads for jobs in the games industry, which is one section in the back.

Is it only me or does anyone else remember back in 1999 when the 3G (which I wouldn't say has mass market acceptance even now) licenses went up for bidding in the UK? As I remember it came to 20 billion pounds (the irony is I am in the UK using a US PC, so no pound sign for me on the keyboard) in the end, which is a HELL of a lot of money for a piece of paper saying you may broadcast on these frequencies. I don't think it would work out well for anyone if this turned out to follow the same path.

My PS3 copy of the Darkness still has its wrapper on for some reason, Ninja Gaiden goes 3/4 unfinished though it is excellent and Mario Galaxy is taking up a lot of my time at the moment, and thats onlyt when Table Tennis isn't. Must get round to finishing Zelda, and I like the odd Motorstorm race online too. So much quality, so little time - and I've asked for the Orange box for xmas as well...

  19. I love my office on AT&T Calls Telecommuters Back To the Cubicle · · Score: 1

Sorry if I am being redundant - I usually RTFA and read all the Slashdot shit that follows (don't get me wrong - I love this place) but I recently started a new job after seven years of telecommuting. This new job means I am at work on basic time of 9-5 and I have no choice but to be at least seen to be productive within those hours. Telecommuting, whilst initially attractive eventually fucks you up, unless you are one of the 0.1% of the world population that are androids (Google take note) - and hugely naturally self motivated (not me). Something domestic always turns up, and with the arrival of our baby six months back... Well ... Never being able to shut the office door can be very destructive on your personal life, I learn't that to my detriment. If I need to crunch I can now do it on my own terms and the demarcation between life/work is now there. Most employers will let you work from home when you absolutely _need_ to. I got so bored of being at home that I had to escape the house at 6 pm no matter what (after 4 days stretch of not seeing a customer or anyone other than wife/child). And that involved alcohol, starting at 3pm because I could (think Crackberry) and ending up in a vicious circle sort of way. My new employment let me work at home if I have to - the rest of the time the 'office door' is shut. I am truly much happier. Having said that I moved close enough that the office is only at worst a 30 min drive... Lots to be said for living near the office... Swings and roundabouts for all but the whole everyone telecommute idea is only a panacea.

Yeah I know PC's are always one step ahead of the latest console tech, but I could never be bothered with the upgrading. Console gaming is plug and play and thats how I personally like it and dual analog controllers are just fine as far as I'm concerned. Try playing any Katamari game with a mouse.

I like plenty of 'popular' things, I'm pretty sure I'm no cultural snob, but Harry Potter has not ever been one of those things. Don't know why. I know your comment wasn't aimed at me personally but I suppose there are always extremes in evry bell curve of whats universally liked and whats not, if that's not too much of an oxymoron.
