  1. Interesting on ATI's 1GB Video Card · · Score: 1

I was reading some hardware reviews on some ATI Crossfire graphics cards... the things seemed to be pretty dang good save for the fact that they couldn't go above 60hz refresh rate. So this card, they throw in a lot of memory... That's fine. But can they go above 60hz?

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page _id=1497/ What you do is simple... you take the books, line them up on these things called shelves and you put them in order according to the name of the person who wrote the book. Or you could put them in order according to size and color for a better decorative effect.

  8. You guys are talking to the wrong people. on Will Novell's Desktop Linux Catch On? · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you want to get MS off your systems in a company environment you need to stop trying to convince your Co-Workers who don't even know what Linux is and don't care... You need to talk to the Bean Counters who manage the purse strings. Get the numbers for them and don't expect them to look anything up. Show them in a spread sheet. One column the cost for Windows XP or Vista, Office, and the other commercial software that you guys use... Then total that up and multiply by as many workstations and deduct any volume liscense discounts. Then in the other column you can just put a big fat ZERO for the cost of Ubuntu (or other distro like Fedora Core) and then list the open source alternatives to your software with those related (usually zero) prices. This will take the laugh factor out of the equations... Hit the bean counters with the numbers and let them do the rest of the math. Who cares if DELL doesn't offer anything you want... build your own systems with Fedora or Ubuntu or Slackware whatever you want. Show these numbers to the beanie and bowtie guy and he will listen.

  9. I love E-Books... I really do. on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1

But there are things I don't like about them. For one, I don't like sitting at my computer for long stretches of a time to really get into and read and enjoy a book. So that means I need a portable device for it. I had an iPaq for awhile and I ran different E-Readers on it and found them to be all lacking. While I liked the back-lit screen so I can read in the dark (perfect for reading all the HP Lovecraft stuff) I really didn't like display only showing 1/2 a paragraph. I can see the potential here, but the application so far is not quite up to snuff. If you want a premium title, or a new book, the downloads were the same bloody cost of the printed book. Considering the streamlined product delivery channel and production costs - the ebook should be much much cheaper. I've not tried reading an ebook on a tablet/notebook... but this new MS Orgami looks like a good ticket for this. I'm a writer... I also digest about 3 books a week on average. I take this stuff seriously and the experience of sitting down with a good book should be the same with a printed book as an E-book, but with some added multi-media features. A PDA is too limited and a full laptop is too clunky. The E-Book Reader Devices that I've seen have all been too narrowly focused. Again, this new MS Orgami looks like something that could really bring Ebooks out of the closet again.

  11. RE: Tablet PC on Microsoft Origami Unfolds · · Score: 1

I'm a shooter... write for a gun magazine and everything. This Tablet PC thing reminds me of something. The Beretta Cougar which is now out of production. The Cougar was a fantastic handgun. Very reliable and very accurate. Beretta just sat back and waited for Lethal Weapon 5 to come out with Mel Gibson packing a Cougar or something. Then they put the Cougar in a glossy wooden presentation case. Then they tried a high tech looking aluminum case. They really didn't know how to market the Cougar, who to sell it to or how. So the Cougar didn't sell. Marketwise, it was failure. But that is no reflection on the gun itself. I had one for several years and I loved it. Owners love them. But just because others didn't buy them isn't an indictment of the product. Much like the Tucker car, it was just ahead of the times. Tablet PC's are much the same way. The devices themselves are pretty good... but who are they selling these to? And are they putting in sufficient hardware specs for those users? From what I've seen in the tablets that I've checked out and who was wanting to use them... no. Either not enough memory, storage, or horsepower under the hood. Local clinic had a couple doctors buy them... but the Tablets couldn't run the software that the clinic uses. So the doctors dropped them and picket up little notebooks instead. Close, but no cigar.

  15. The Military still uses Animals... on Robotic 'Pack Mule' with Impressive Reflexes · · Score: 1

And I'm not talking about the Marines. The Army still uses horses for patroling mountain areas. I know, I rode one. Would rather have had a motorcycle, a diesle KLR-650... but the Horse was a better choice for the terrain. Special Forces uses them too, but you are not going to see that in any recruiting posters. Photos are out there of US Special Forces riding into battle in Afghanistan on horseback. Why? Because that's what the native soldiers they were working with were riding. DARPA is also working on Sharks for patrol and tracking and of course we all know about the Navy using Dolphins for sub and mine hunting. The biggest use of animals in the miliary remains dogs. Big dogs are used daily for security and patrol work. You think a Police K9 dog is badass? You should see the ones used by Army MP's. Damn. Impressive beasts. This robotic unit is a good idea, if you can replicate the qualities of working animals in a robotic package without unique logistical issues that animals have. (You guys forgot disease and injuries) Then we would have a better and rapidly deployable transport vehicle. The two stroke engine is a bad idea. I was Light Infantry when I was in the Army and let me tell you guys - there are a lot of times when you don't want ANY sound. An Animal sound might not be so bad sometimes... but a an unnatural sound, like metalic or engine noise - that would have awarded me and my guys a rain of mortar fire more than a few times. So while this might be a good idea... unless it can be made totally silent - it's going to be just about totally useless in modern warware with the units that it is supposed to be deployed with. Because I was once on of those tired soldiers that would have loved to have had something to carry my pack. But if it made noise - no thanks. Taking this idea forward... if they made them Horse sized and as fast as a horse... that would make for a nice replacement for those critters. Especially if they don't buck you off into a bed of cacti like what happened to me. I'm no John Wayne that's for sure. Farking horses.
