  1. Re:But will it work? on The Simpsons Movie · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't know if I agree on the plotlines being simple. If you watch any episode in the past 10 or so years, you can easily forget how the episode started at all. I happen to like the convolutedness(real word?) of it. It makes the episodes seem longer and it's funny just for being so absurd. I think it would be easy to make a movie just by extending some of the twising, non-linear plotlines of the episodes.

It seems that most commercials and tv shows over-compensate for female equality. On the rare occasion that I catch a new prime-time "family" sitcom, the dad is usually a big idiot and the mom is the one who holds the home together. Especially in commercials when the wife will leave the man of the house in charge of dinner, and he doesn't know how to boil water or something. It's pretty lame. Personaly, I've found that this formula only works on The Simpsons, Family Guy, and maybe a couple of other, genuinly funny, shows.

That's right, The Simpsons can do no wrong.

The eskimo had older people in thier societies as well. When they got to an age where thier wisdom, skills, etc were of no value to the society, it was understood that the older person would take a walk on the ice and go to sleep, and not wake up.

"Asian", as a denoter of a human ethnicity, is a lousy word. You can't lump in Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Polynesians, and Russians in the same group--doing that widens the grouping so much you might as well include everyone.

C'mon, it's being used as a cultural term, not a geographical one. When you say someone is "Asian", no one thinks you're talking about a Russian, or Arab person. You would've said "Russian", or "Arab".

Regarding the whole, racism in America thing, the reason many people think that racism isn't such a big deal anymore is because the people who still feel that way know how to hide it. You don't see as many brutal hate crimes on TV anymore, but my roommate still gets pulled over 2 or 3 times a month (they're looking for drugs, which he has never done or sold), and I still get people talking about moving thier kids to a different school district so that they don't have to be with "those black people" or whatever, not knowing that I have a son who is mixed. These kinds of things really worry me. My son is black as far as society is concerned, and he may be sitting accross the interview desk from one of these bigots someday.

Wife beaters throughout history have been barking orders at women while calling them "woman" just to remind them that they aren't men, and don't deserve the same respect. Of course it's gonna offend your "female friend" when you use it in the same context.

Just because some toy company marketing drone puts out toys that limit the imagination doesn't mean kids play with them that way.

I remember when they started coming out with g.i. joes with ridiculous backbacks that made battle noises, and huge, stupid looking guns that shot water and little projectiles. I said basically the same thing you're saying. "What's wrong with the kid making the noise! You can make it sound however you want! Kids are lame now" Then I had a son. All his toys have some soundmaking button, or remote or some other automated fun feature, but he hardly ever uses them. He's four now and is completely capable of using the remote for the crappy little cars he has, but he doesn't. He pushes them around on whatever little obstacle course he fasions out. He doesn't push the button on the 12in power ranger figure he has, he makes the WOOSH and ZAP noises himself. From my own experience kids hardly ever play with toys in reality the way the actors play with them in the commercials. The toys may have changed, but the way kids play hasn't.
