These machines are incredible for their era, which is not surprising considering they pretty much lost all the best talent in the company to Amiga.

This is not really that scary; the guy apparently expected a little common sense, and that's usually a mistake in dealing with the government

What's scary is the recent corporate crime bill recently passed by the house of representatives, which would make it illegal to attempt a federal crime, not just to commit it.

As attempt is obviously pretty subjective, this is awful scary. War Driving would be illegal. As someone else pointed out, just running a auto-discovery tool would be illegal, or could be made to appear as illegal.

I was looking for a quote from Orwell on the subject, something on the lines of make everyone a criminal, if you want control, but I'm sick of the whole subject.

  9. The Silver Lining on WorldCom to File for Chapter 11 Protection · · Score: 1

I think this is a silver lining at least. Worldcom owns UUnet; UUnet provides (i'm fairly certain) the majority of the modem pools used by AOL; If UUnet suffers a "disruption of service", then AOL DIES! .

Unfortunately, they also own the remnants of the old Compuserve business network, which is the backbone for UPS and Visa....
Which also means that portion, at least, will most likely be federally protected.
Which is a good thing. I've seen several people post that they have backup circuits; I wonder how many of those backup circuits are just Worldcom by another name?

Don't forget Matrix Games; they have taken several of the best strategy games of history and rewrote them to be playable on win32 platforms, with probably the best work done on Steel Panthers: World at War (SPWAW).

They took SSI's old code for Steel Panthers 3, and rewrote the game so it would run on win32, instead of just DOS. and then, they made it free (as in beer).

While not quite as much fun to me as the original (the re-write only does warfare circa 1938-1946), this has got to be one of the most re-playable games out there.

    IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE.
I'm really hoping I will be able to do all these things on Linux soon, because even though I'm an MCSE, I've had quite enough of MacroHard; the recent announcement that they will be expiring Win2k put the nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned. They FINALLY came up with a couple of decent platforms (Win2k for work, Win98SE for games) and they are doing all they can to keep anyone from using them.

With the current state of the nation, this could be considered as sufficient reason to subpeona the logs for /. not that an actual reason is neccesary these days. On another aspect, the people being held without trial are "connected" or "related" to known terrorist / extremist groups. thats all thats required, being connected in some way or related.
