Actually, the movie wasn't real bad, in and of it's self. I just wish they hadn't called it Sarship Troopers. I don't think RAH would really have minded, though; I think he would have been shocked if the movie came even close to the book. BTW, Starship Troopers is on the list of 10 books my son absolutely has to read before I will help him buy a car.

You are right, and you are wrong. You can't build a dirt cheap system cheaper than you can buy one; the big boys get massive volume discounts, they can afford to sell you a cheapy system for $400 and still make a profit; you couldn't piece-build a system for the same price. However. I've built all my own systems since the 386SX-25; My mom is using a computer that I put in that case; a friend of mine is using a 486DX-120 I built in '95 as a FTP server, and my present computer is using a case I bought in '97, one of it's hard drives is from '99, the SBAWE64 card is from '98, motherboard from '01, GeForce2 card from 2 weeks ago. The point is, if you build it yourself, you can just upgrade the parts that actually need upgrading. with a cheap low-end Dell or whatever, you are basically getting a disposable computer. You will be able to use the Drives, and thats most likely it (maybe the CPU). check out http://www.jncs.com, http://www.lan-plus.com for parts.

The first point that needs to be established is that Laws are not mandates from god (in the U.S., at least). I would challenge anyone in the country to say conclusively that they had never broken a law. I would also like to point out that there are some laws that are unconstitutional; they are still laws until they get thrown out, but should a person obey a law where obedience breaks a higher law? Ok, so things aren't black and white. right? So. If the government can catch everyone breaking any law, even the silly ones, even the illegal ones, even the unconstitutional ones, then you claim that this is a GOOD thing? I don't quite understand that point of view.

And, my kids would have something to do while they are visiting. Of course, I could always just send them VHS tapes. but what's the fun in that?

  25. Re:Freenet. on Making an Independent Web Site? · · Score: 1

Actually, Freenet is a really good way to do something like what was mentioned. Due to low user numbers, and a little bit of upheavel in the development process, right now it's not functioning better than marginally. However, with enough perseverance, you can at the current time put ANYTHING you want on freenet, and have it be visible from the Internet at large through the use of the (currently few) public proxies. The longest running public proxy is apparently down right now, but here is the google cache. There are a couple of others i'm aware of, but as running a public freenet proxy can surely get you in trouble, i won't mention them. there is also a pretty good automated freesite (freenet based website) publishing program called freeweb, ( http://freeweb.sourceforge.net/ ) which allows you to operate a freesite fairly easily. So here is what you get: you can publish a freesite which can contain ANYTHING whatsoever, with complete anonymity, or as much anonymity as you like. The more popular the site is, the easier it will be for people using freenet to see. with increasing freenet adoption, more public freenet proxies will become available; the internet at large can access these proxies, and the more of them there are, the more the bandwidth load will be spread out. Getting back to the original question, if I wanted to have a website and wanted to have as few controls over it as possible, I would get a T-1 or better, run a freenet node on it, and possibly a freenet public proxy; you should be able to get "common carrier" type protections on the legal aspects of running the proxy, and you can if you wish run your freesite on it and not claim ownership. If anyone wants to do this, there are a BUNCH of people, myself included, who would help out on the technical aspects of the whole thing.
