I think it's a good idea to differentiate between a truely Open Source thing and something that operates with the outside world in an open way.
For example, a standard USB port verses an ipad connector.
Although it might dilute attitudes, it's also a useful term. You shouldn't turn ones back on that with emotion. Sure, avoid the term but recognise it's usefulness, if only to coin another term because otherwise we're blinding ourselves with emotion... and if having a holy war this is where the enemy creeps in.
I thought this too. Looking into it though, how do we actually do it? The only way I can think of that's convenient on a Symbian phone is stickam, then viewing it on a computer already running somewhere... which isn't great. You want the whole thing to be as quick as pressing one button
They may have seemingly have less to lose than a younger person but hang on! Seemingly touching let's think about this. What have we got?
1) One human life considered less important than another 2) Does this raise stereotypes from the 2nd World war? Or would the response be similar in other countries? Back then we thought the Kamikazee did it for the emperor. What does this mean in context? What do gen Y Japanese think of the old folk? 3) Actually an older person has been exposed to more radiation already... are they more or less susceptible than a `young` person? What is young? It's only about chances but the chances are not at all how they are being viewed. A 70 year old may have another longer to live than a 30 year old. I know plenty of people dying in their 20's from cancer, and as said here before a 20 year estimate could be 19 years out. 4) Just general ageism here?
I love to see a positive story in the news but I always like to observe oneself and my own reactions to this are not all good.
My main point to make here is to always examine ones reactions to news - that is more important than deciding whether it is good or bad that people will sacrifice themselves for the greater good.
Personally I dodge the whole situation by using my mobile phone (which is Nokia Symbian) - with Fring and a VoIP SIP provider for a normal phone line. For voice calls I find this to be the most compatible solution.
This gives me a DiD (like Skype-in) and I configure my provider to forward calls to my mobile if I'm offline. That costs me nothing.
The caller sometimes has to pay but it's often not much and the only people who might complain are in foreign lands and rare instances. For this I can:
- give an access number to dial through - get a a DiD in their local country - fall back to gTalk
Regards video I used to use Skype but video on Symbian is no longer possible since they blocked fring. So I'm stuck here. I've looked at Bamuser and even stickam but yet to really give them a go. I expect things will change when Symbian gets fully out of date, though hopefully I'll be able to hang on for a bit longer with it.
I could do with some sort of answerphone service too.
However, I don't know many people with Skype (!?). It would certainly be nice to be able to video call people for free.
From Wikipedia: A draft horse (US), draught horse (UK) or dray horse (from the Anglo-Saxon dragan meaning to draw or haul; compare Dutch dragen meaning to carry), less often called a heavy horse, is a large horse bred for hard, heavy tasks such as ploughing and farm labour. There are a number of different breeds, with varying characteristics but all share common traits of strength, patience and a docile temperament which made them indispensable to generations of pre-industrial farmers
When are we going to see more multiplayer games designed as multiplayer from the start rather than leaving it up to the mod community?
Great to see mod support. That's the thing about ID, that great sort of attitude.
However, there might need to be more than this for it to be really successful.
For example, melding strategy more with the FPS, linking to Facebook... able to game on your mobile phone when you're not shooting... things like that.
It's Quake5 to me. Building on that engine all the time. That's good and ok but I love ID so much for releasing source code and everything that I want them to beat Nintendo and everyone.
The thing is, it's thinking within the box. The first thing is that there's a 3D engine. So the first thing is that ID games are 3D... then the next thing is shooting. Hang on! Who said there should be a visual interface at all? Why not start with an audio interface with no visuals at all? That would force thinking outside the box. That's only one example.
Modding is the key thing about the PC. Should be more of this on consoles. Perhaps even a different method of development. The way it came about was Doom, then mods came off of that. It doesn't still have to be that way. Maybe it could be engine only, or allow modders to charge somehow (that might not work either... just guessing).
My brother got into programming due to modding. It's totally different when you're playing a game you made, with the other developers who you're mates with.
The social side is key. I can't believe there's single mode anymore, I can't be bothered with that since a long time ago I don't know why people still do it.
It seems a shame to say all this when clearly there's so much effort gone in here.
That said, there could be a lot going on behind the scenes, like those jumping robots, that looks interesting.
Oh and yeah, the car is odd and sounds stupid, though I can see the sweet idea of winging it through shooting around at the same time, I can where that was attempting to go, but it didn't work out quite like that. I mean, you could have instead actually been inside the car with bullets flying all round, right?
Perhaps take a step back and simply create an environment to coordinate stuff from other games and mods... or, seeing as patents ruins that, set the scene for others to mod in those features and then coordinate the result.
And I find there aren't that many multiplayer only games... especially games designed specifically only for multiplayer; they tend to be mods & community driven
My setup was any Symbian phone with Fring and VoIPCheap with 3 UK.
This is just because phones like the n95, n80, e71, e55 are cheap. The network can be data only if you want by using a dongle sim but little point in that
Thanks for the advice,
a knee-jerk over reaction I think.
I will take your advice and remember to check for the upgradability record of the vendor before I buy my next phone.
Waiting on something like Nokia Maps first though, where you can preload maps before the holiday. When that comes through it'll be Android time for me, then I'll have to get used to touchscreen. I'm showing my age...
"This is a world apart from companies that actually allow users to be in charge of their own computer - and that typically is only practical, and only occurs, where there is a high level of tech savvy. Like Google, who will buy you the computer you ask for and let you install what the hell you like on it."
Absolutely. And I can tell you how frustrating it can be to work in a company surrounded by non tech savvy users because you're in lock down and there's little you can do about it.
Just want to say thanks for this info. I haven't been keeping up with Android developments.
The only things that draw me personally to Android is the thought that I have control over the software because, of the last 3 phones I've bought I've been forced into it because of outdated software. (p800 Symbian UIQ went outdated, K750i SonyEricson software outdated, c900 poor warranty service, n95 s60v3 not too outdated yet but I'm sure will be soon and nothing can do about it). I basically caved in 3 months ago and went for another phone that does what I want but suffers from the same problem because of the Nokia free predownload mapping it came with (E55 s60v5 non touch).
For me, the ideal situation is for Vendors to be free to act like jerks. But for consumers to be educated enough and disciplined enough for vendors to have no motive for doing so. Clearly users are idiots though because this stuff happens; you need a critical mass of educated people because anything happens and even then you need a break in the line from manufacturers. So instead the realistic solution I feel is to tax wasteful manufacturing.
The next time someone chats about phones with me I'll say `Yeah, been there 5x before and they all blocked software updates in the end`.
Has anyone calculated how much advertising is worth for Facebook?
In the current state I noticed they couldn't even geotarget outside of America properly - I requested geotargetting but I noticed in their logs they also advertised to people who didn't fill out a location -useless.
That's in the present state of course. If we imagine what the most is it could be worth, what then? Any additional value beyond this smacks of investment for ulterior motives.
You might compare English to German for example and have a look at what it looks like around the world wars.
Careful on translations though. Few words are direct translations meaning exactly the same.
Most arguments are based on people having different meanings assigned to words in their head and not realising actually.
At the moment I have to do this by making the PNG transparent and overlaying. I'd love to know how to do it automatically. It's facinating to see different languages reacting differently to world events, like the 60's and wars, for example.
Don't suppose you know a symbian app that constantly records by voice activation do you? That is, record all the time and loop back to the start. then after you need the evidence, you select `save`. That way, no need to see the problem coming before it happens
All of these phones become useless due to the battery, still.
I ended up going for a Symbian phone....
a Nokia E55. 2 weeks ago.
Bit crazy because the O/S will no doubt soon be out of date. But it does the important things... which are: - still got putty ssh - free maps, fairly global coverage, and you can download them before your holiday. You can't do that with iphone or android, maps orientate the according to how it's held - it's smaller than all of those phones; thinner - not touchscreen - SIP internet calls can be integrated... personally I can't get it working so I use fring... - takes a full sized bluetooth keyboard
And it was ~$200.
I know I can't write stuff for it so easily like android.. though it can run python alright... and I'm sure it will be out of date soon
but for the moment it just does the normal stuff, you know.
I looked at iphone people playing flick the coin and all this stuff and thought to myself, I don't want that, I just want maps and be able to use that stuff as much as I want without worrying about battery.
So I had to go for this sort of phone. It's the only one I know that can do this stuff.

I've often wanted to read science. Is there a way I can do so without breaking the bank?
Most people I've asked share passwords... I don't know if I'd want to get into that... though my usage would be so low it would probably work.
We get this problem with adverts on TV too.
Amazingly there are no results on ebay for `normaliser`; no one has made a hardware dongle to plug inline of the speakers to fix the problem:
http://www.instructables.com/answers/I-need-a-hardware-volume-levellernormalizer-for-a/
I thought this too. Looking into it though, how do we actually do it? The only way I can think of that's convenient on a Symbian phone is stickam, then viewing it on a computer already running somewhere... which isn't great. You want the whole thing to be as quick as pressing one button

Yes, this is the point of the post.

Go with the market or the market will work against you
Google isn't as good as it used to be.
Spam,
no search within results,
no booleen search.
It can sometimes be very hard to find what you are looking for.
I'd prefer to pay for a premium service that works and I doubt the moat called Chrome would dare stop me doing so.

Agreed. At first I thought we had GNURadio/USSP at the giger counter wavelength.
After reading the articles I'm none the wiser.

Not at all surprised to see him moving into a sideline with WoW, not surprised at all.
We can use this to our benefit: Write captcha questions that only your target audience can pass.
But (and this is crucial), don't call it a captcha. Call it a admissions proficiency test.

Turn on phone for the first time,
"Which application auditor would you like to choose?"
"Which search engine would you like to use?"
"Which Browser would you like to use?"
Here, here. A budget of that size gets a nice lawyer, though you'd need no win-no fee...
when there's multiple people getting screwed it makes sense to band together with legal costs...if that's possible
