Any has anyone considered that to be able to view ANYTHING at a decent quality in this game, you need a really expensive computer and videocard, or really expensive Xbox360 which most kids who would be 'harmed' by this can't afford? I know I can't afford them. However, I can afford google....

First let me say that I don't play WoW. I played some of the earlier MMORPGs (Meridian 59, The Realm, UO, EQ, Asheron's Call, Lineage, etc..) in Alpha/Beta testing stages, but haven't really put time into newer ones. My roommate however plays WoW so I see how it works.

Anyway, let me get this straight, a game that has ~6 million subscribers paying $14.99/month (I know there are multi-month passes, but i'm sure that's not everyone) has an income of approximately 90,000,000 (That's 90 Million) per month. They probably got $25 of the 'box' cost from everyone, which would have been $150,000,000 from everyone for their intial boxes. Per year they are bringing in ~$1,080,000,000 (That's over a billion dollars folks) from MMORPG subscriptions.

A billion dollars is a lot of money. I know they have costs (bandwidth, programmers, servers, help-desks, etc), but they should at least be able to figure out a way to either increase the number of max players per server, split servers, allow movement between servers, etc with that type of money. It's not like they aren't probably going to get ANOTHER billion next year. You can make SEVERAL feature films for this cost. LoTR (all three films) cost around $300 million to make.

Provide the Chinese everything that they can to get around the filters, with Proxies, VPNS, satilite connections, subversion methods, etc. The Biggest website in the World vs the Biggest Country in the World. Hell, maybe google could do a DoS attack on China's Government. Who would really care to stop them? I think the Mountain View police/FBI department is going to pay about as much attention to calls from China about a massive DoS attack from Google as any government offical in China cares about what we say when they violate our laws/standards.

    Fuck China. Google, attack them!

While China is a "World Power" when it comes to people and money, Google's stock prices and value will go up even if they totally blow off China for the next 10 years.

And true to the name, the games aren't even one step better than the prior system, and the better graphic'd games on the previous generation systems (Shadows of the Collusus) look almost exactly the same. In fact, I bet if the PS2 has better specs, with the same coding they could have just 'turned up the settings' on Shadows of the Collusus and it would have looked better than most Xbox 360 games.

  15. Uncompressed HD and Surround bandwidth on CNN On The $500 PS3 · · Score: 1

Actually my friend, i'm not sure that there is ANY optical media that can handle the bandwidth of uncompressed HD and 5.1 surround (at 192kHz 24bits) together. Even most hard drive RAIDs will strain at that. The media isn't "beyond its time", it is just in time and perhaps behind.

I haven't done the exact math, but wouldn't it probably take ~9 Tb of data to store these uncompressed for a movie that's about 2 hours long?

Hell, just the audio is pretty hefty at that.

(Roughly) 24 bits * 192khz/sec (192,000) * 6 channels = 28,224,000 bits/sec. I think thats around the same amount of data as most DVDs use for video today. Pump it up to 12 channels, and that's a good amount of data (10.2 audio). Add on spanish, and french audio tracks, and that's a lot of information.

The video is even worse. I'll leave that for someone else to calculate at 1080i uncompressed with 14 bit colour.

If you are purchasing a Mac Mini, then you might not really be a Pro Users so you might not be affected by the same things that a Pro User would.

Why would a Pro User "Need it now" you may wonder: Because they have professional needs to fulfill and some of those are time oriented, which in turn means they are money oriented- this business oriented.

If I'm about to set up a recording studio that will open on January 15th or so, and I need to purchase computers to go in it, or if I'm about to go on the road and I need four powerbooks that WILL run my Pro apps then it matters and I need it now. Realistically, at that point you just buy what is available and works (i'm not sure how i'd like being a guinea pig for version 1.0 of these things in a business enviornment anyway) and move on.

However, Apple has a habit of not always still carrying old products. What if my powerbook and G5 tower both get dropped off the back of the truck and I need two computers that work with Pro apps and I need to get them right now? If their new laptops don't support my applications and that is all they are selling... then that really isn't cool.

I could also see if being a huge affect to them financially for a bit. How many teens are buying 30" apple displays and $1500 video cards to play Quake? Few. Quite a few professional graphic designers and videographers are! No one will buy Quad processor and 30" display items if their software won't work.

  20. Evolution- Lack of Evidence? Nope on Federal Judge Rules Against Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

One of the points that I have seen made is the claim that science lacks all of the information needed to back up evolution. First of all, I don't see evolution as lacking many points of information- but even if so... How much information in comparison is backing up ID? Does anyone have a single speck of proof about this "Intelegent Designer"? Nope.

We each in science what we can best prove at the time, same with mathematics, computer science, electronics, history, etc...

Just because we don't know something, is no reason to attribute that to a "Higher Power" automatically. If Aliens land on this planet and start telling us about the cells that they put on this planet a few billion years ago as an experiment and now they are just checking up on us... well then it's time to teach that the aliens made us, but until we have direct and scientifically provable (by scientific method) evidence of something else being in charge, then we should teach what science has shown us!

Science classes should teach the scientific method and things that we have observed through it. We don't have a unified theory yet, but that doesn't mean that nothing is physics works. It just means that we have figured out a few things really well, but we just haven't gotten them to all line up yet!

Philosophy and Religious Studies classes can reference ID all they want as an idea for discussion, but it has no scientific merit. Any student that doesn't get the idea of what science is and what religion are as separate subjects needs to take some remedial classes.

Sure a Quad processor G5 isn't exactly cheap, but what does a quad processor Dell solution cost? Have you ever priced an Alienware system? I know they aren't going for the bargan basement 199 computers, but they aren't that bad really. Try to price out some SGI, IBM, Alienware and Dell workstations and it comes out about the same.
The mac mini also tilts the scales pretty well for low end computing. It isn't a bad box. I've thought of buying a few for family members.
