A site with a javascript automathic hoax - text generator.
I rememeber putting together the most absurd hoax I could, translate it back and forth from English to other languages in babelfish, prefixing each line with a random number of "> > >" pasting it on my e-mail program, and sending it to a jokes list.
It got the "joke of the week" mention on the list quite easily.
Hi,
I had translated the official answer of Sergio Amadeu to the press regarding this issue. While there is no proccess, Amadeu received an offical judicial notification asking for an apologize in 48 hours.
The original note is on the site of the CIPSGA, a local NGO commited to free software. There are other related news on CIPSGA site as well, including a microsoft answer (I will not loose my time translating that - use the fish).
Notice to the Press- Sérgio Amadeu
In attention to the national and international press demand, which supports the brazillian government in this moment without precedent in History, in which the director of an important puclic institution in this country sufferes personally the action of those interested in keeping an hegemonic model, write, after hearing my lawyers, state that the justice act enacted against me is, in itself, so unexpected and outrageous, that it doesn't deserve an answer.
On the other hand, I'd like to state that the contraction of software preserving the values of freedom and opennes fis, for the Brazilan Governent, a question linked to the very core of the democratic principles. And why a long and painfull path has passed for we to get at the current status of democraticy on this Country, we shall stand firm in our fight.
If democracy is a value filled with ideologies, it is never an insgnificant factor. If democracy is a dream, it is a dream from which this Country will nerver wake again.
The future is free.

I would not expect any other behaviour. As a matter of fact,I find hilarious that one justifies that his own computer is "clean from spyware" because he runs a closed source gratis program.
Indeed, it is self-contradictory to run a closed-source program of this nature, just as it is at least risky run a closed source program of any nature if one is concerned about spyware/leechware/trojans/viruses at all.
And they used to be an 8 bit Microprocessor - not the 8 bit counterpart of MC68000 which powered early Mac's and Amigas, but the chip upon which the popular 6502 - which powered the Apple ][ computer series - was based.
That "contest for points" is what I found out is what compeles one to go writing in there.
The main difference to wikipedia seens to be on the very nature of the userbase, which, as shornand noted above is more "pop/informal".
The problems you mention are real, but the best of both worlds is probably a tweekedt E2 to allow for compensating for it's problems.
The problems you mentioned could be addressed, for example, making an "outdated" voting option on articles taht would made the initial poster to loose points - tehrefore there would be an interest in keeping things uptaded. Similar features can be easily thoguht on the system to let it go usable - I just found wikipedia way too much permissive, and without a proper reward system.
What can't be fixed in E2 is it's userbase - and since the ones that became editors are insular and elitist as you have noted - it is a major drawback to the site (I myself can't say if it is or isn't that way, I am not that active on the site)
If one is to start a new projetct in another language, that is another story.
One interesting thing I found out: the content in wikipedia is much more "professional", and enciclopedic than E2's. But the software for E2 has much more possibilities, and is far more entertaining to create content for than wikipedia's. E2's larger weakness seem to be the lacking of support for image uploads or linking.
There are were Ray Bradbury opinion Mars are - we are gonna kill all the Martians, and moreover, all creatures of Myth that exist in our imagination who have moved there.
Someone must have brainwashed him into saying it is a good idea to go there.:-)
Seriously - the early chronicles about Mars from Ray Bradbury made me cry several times while reading them.
This sane Mike Shuttleworth offered, about 2 months ago, some funding for The Gimp, and two of the current developers made a deal with him to be paid to further GEGL (Generic Graphical Library) development and integration with the GIMP.
GEGL, once fully implemented, and integrated to The GIMP core, will finally allow it to use images with higher color depths than 8 bit per plane.
Normally I do not need any further instalations after I finish my OS install.
A tipical GNU/Linux Distro comes with hundreds of applicatives, including but not restricted to 3 different office suites, an Image Manipulation Program, 4 or 5 different media players for audio and video, and another such bunch of web browsers.
Besides that, tehre is no need to anti-virus, and security related software is also included. (firewalling, port mapping, etc)
That is, if one cares to select All Packages, taht will ammount to about 5GB - not much in an 80GB HD world.
Hi, We all saw that Asimov broke up with a traditional model for robot stories, as he did not paint his robots as foes. Rather, restringed by the Three Laws of Robotics, those robots were well behaved servants to mankind, and could not be used for evildoing.
How do you feel this going on the real world? I am by no means a tchnofobist, but, day by day, I see A.I. researching on one side, and Unmaned Warcraft Machines on the other evolving more and more. Military wil certainly have little concerns in add more and more "smart algorithyms" in their war machinery. So the question is: Given current trends can we be spared of a "Terminator Universe" like cenario? And if so, how shall it be achieved?
Actually, I can't help thinking "Share violation reading file winword.exe - this file is in use by another program. Windows will reboot now in order to free the file winword.exe for your usage [OK] "
My to be born kids assembling together the house toaster, microwave oven and TV sets in order to form a giant-robot that has 3 times the wireless bandwidth capability of the devices standing alone.
I just an nearly UNABLE to operate the One Button stuff, because all the maintenance operations and error messages taht were once supposed to be flashed and selected through the printers' pannel are now made trough a Proprietary piece of software designed and locked to a single O.S. platform on a single kind of hardware.
What are these now? one will be unable to open them to pick out jammed sheets, just like the Volvo car from the other day?
This however won't affect Mandrake users, since ALSA has been the default sound system for years under Mandrake.
But the previous releases had some issues with devfs (also default), and it seens that it has changed to "udev" on kernel 2.6. I hope the issues are over.
It was yesterday (march, the 3rd) - I've just made a banner calling for a Free Software Lecture on the local University, and used a "What if your Car Hood Were Shut" analogy to catch the attention of non geeks to the banner.
It is online here (300 Kb jpg, Portuguese, sorry).
Well, Unfortunatelly I guess you will have to read the articles pointed in the story. As well as the twelve other documents. When you are done, if you can make any sense of it, you could help the world by making a good sumary, and posting it in places like the nice everything2 semi-clopaedia. I for myself am still to try SVG witch is a usefull WEB XML recomendation at all.
It is a master plan to turn web site creation in a thing so complicated that Indians will no longer be able to catch up with the neccessary standards.
So, in 2.5 centuries, when Governamental Mandatory Internet Explorer Browser V. 7.5 do implement all of these (stolen from GPLed code, of course), all those jobs will be re-insourcered into the USA.
I had issues trying to continue with IDE-SCSI in 2.6.0 - when I installed an RPM with an updated DEVFS my pseudo SCSI cdrom was remaped to a unit I never found again, neither when rebooting in 2.4.x.:-(
So I quit fighting devfs configs, and went all for ATAPI access and burning.
First, remove "hcd=ide-scsi" from the kernel parameters. Reboot. Check if everything is fine with: $ cdrecord -scanbus dev=/dev/hdc (or hd* as appropriate). If it is fine, them K3b should work smoothly.
I am still have an issue with automount tough. Does anyone had to change anything in fstab (besides the device name, of course), for automount to work ok?
It is difficult for people who have never used it. As is pretty much anything else.
The "big difference" is that instead of oppening the whole program, images and sibblings in a single window, The GIMP opens the toolboxes and images in separate windows. This allows a serious user to make an optimal use of the multiple desktops avaliable in almost all window manager for X11 out there.
As for making a phtoshop course, go for it. But make sure to pick a good course. If you pick a crappy one, that instead of teaching you some of the fundaments behind image manipulation, just mention a couple of the latest Photoshop automagic wizards, that will do you no good, either for using The GIMP, or for doing any serious work.
On the other hand, with a good course, you will find that most of the really usefull stuff on Photoshop or the like is in the GIMP, sometimes even more powerfull.
