  1. Is this really... on How To Teach a Healthy Dose of Skepticism? · · Score: 1

Is this really something you want to outright *teach*? I think it's best to let some learn for themselves but give them "encouragement" along the way. I think if you teach it you end up with people who are overly skeptical because they seem to never develop the key ingredient of skepticism: critical thinking. It seems, at least from my experience, that people who have the "take everything with a grain of salt" line of reasoning pounded into them lose the ability to know when they have crossed the line from being a skeptic to someone to whom no amount of reasoning, facts or other data can move from their position as they will dismiss it due to their continuing to follow their teaching beyond the letter. If they learn on their own and build it up with experience then the seem less likely to fall into this mode.

I'm not sure where you get that I'm giving one party a pass over the other in my post aside from my pre-emptive statement that I'm not pro-Republican. In honestly, my post was less about supporting one particular person and more about being tired of what seems to be a new norm in decrying people for holding a stance today that, when they were younger, they may have once not supported. I never once gave a pass for any of those instances you listed, nor did I imply that having viewpoints that are diametrically opposed one day to another or, as you mention, one sentence to another, were acceptable.

I'm definitely not pro-Republican but why does there seem to be this notion that people are hypocrites because they change their minds about things over the years? So if I do something I stupid when I'm younger and grow to regret it and speak against it as I age, I'm a hypocrite? Hrm... here I thought I was learning from my mistakes. Are we seriously no longer allowed to grow as people and instead are expected to carry the same beliefs, world views and approaches to life from day one until the grave with no hope to grow or change?

  4. Bad example on Do Zebra Stripes Actually Help? · · Score: 4, Interesting

So they conclude it doesn't help (though their own data says that it does, even though it's slight) based on THAT table? Maybe they should try it again with a zebra striped table where the difference between the colors used is slightly more pronounced. I don't know about the rest here but I personally think I had a harder time with that because the color difference between rows was so slight than if they had left out the color. Played tricks on my eyes.

Who cares about lighting the alcohol. On our last flight to Britain my wife forgot to leave behind a pen knife she carries in her purse. Of course, they found that and she had to leave it behind at the screening station. I, carrying two bottles of alcohol in my bag had no problem getting through since you were allowed to bring such things in your carry-on at the time (post-9/11 but pre-"waterbomb" bs). I found it funny that I could easily do much more damage to people by breaking off the bottles and wielding them movie-barfight style than she ever could with that tiny knife.

  24. Re:NO MORE CHRISTMAS MUSIC! on Automatic Christmas Music · · Score: 3, Interesting

And, according to the Wikipedia entry on the Christmas special, it was actually sorta commerialized in nature to begin with:

"However, the special has not been seen in its original, uncut form since its original telecast in 1965. The opening and closing credits contain references to Coca-Cola, the show's original sponsor (the main titles have Linus and Snoopy crashing into a Coca-Cola sign, while the final end credit mentions "Merry Christmas from your local Coca-Cola bottler"). Years later, the FCC imposed sanctions preventing sponsor references in the context of a story (especially children's programming), which is why these elements (as well as several seconds of other footage) have not been seen lately on television, even on home video."

I've never heard that before, so I'm not guaranteeing that someone hasn't imparted their own imagined occurence to Wikipedia.
