I'm sure that would be possible, but you'd need all kinds of other support chips to make it work. When both "cores" are the same, it's easy to schedule/distribute things between them. When they're not, now you have to figure out which processes are high-priority, and should run on the faster core, and which processes are low-priority, and should run on the slower core.

Which, needless to say, is probably pretty damn hard to do. So hard, that it'll never happen.

HOWEVER, rounding up deer and putting them in a pen so people can kill them remotely is just...weird and stupid. So I have to say I'm against it. Should it be illegal? Probably not.

No ISP should be running an SMTP server that doesn't scan for viruses. It's just irresponsible. There are a few viruses that setup their own SMTP server on the users machine, yeah, but that's easily solved by blocking outgoing connections to port 25 on the network, except from the ISP's own mailserver. If all ISPs did those 2 simple things, e-mail viruses would almost be wiped out.

It's basic stuff, and it drives me nuts that precious few ISPs do any of it.

I mean, seriously. How much Mac software is the equivalent of "faceplates for your cell phone?"

And yes, I know that there is all kinds of that crap for Windows and Linux, too. But in the Mac world, it really seems to be the focus of a lot of attention.

  13. Trying to protect people from themselves on Microsoft's New Mantra - It Just Works · · Score: 1

"Finding" things on the computer is what screws up most people that aren't "good with computers".

I don't see any way around it, because it's not a technical problem. People create things, they save them. But they rarely name them properly, and they have ABSOLUETLY NO IDEA where they save things. If it's not in "My Documents", it might as well be gone. And since they can't remember what they named it, and they don't know what kind of file it was, they can't search for it, even if they could find the "Search" button.
I appreciate that a lot of the current thinking in ease-of-use is leaning towards automatic file-organization and easily searchable filesystems, but it really isn't going to help. People are lazy and sloppy- there's no technical solution for that.

  14. It's a marketing problem on OSS Developers Provide A Glimmer of Hope · · Score: 1

There's plenty of good software for Windows. But a lot of it is made by small companies, or even individuals. Neither of which have the marketing/distribution power of the software companies who have their products on Best Buy's shelf.

Unfortunately, the big, rich software companies have learned that you can sell the most broken crap to people if you bundle it with a PC, advertise the hell out of it, or give it a candy-coated (but annoying) interface.

So, the vast majority of "consumer-level" software is horrible. But people don't know that there is better stuff available. Add in the fact that the average computer user is terrified of having to "learn a new program", and you end up with a self-perpetuating prophecy- consumers buy crap, so software companies make crap.

Give me a break. By ANY standard, the new movies have been bad. Kids don't really like them that much. Adults are bored to tears by them. Hell, even the toys are lame.

The most disappointing thing about them is that Lucas could have had ANYONE write and direct these movies. But no, he had to do it himself. He had to make something that fit in with his bullshit Joseph Campbell "modern myth" take on the thing.

Without someone as cool as Han Solo, Star Wars is just lame. The new movies lack anyone to fill that role, and so do all the fan films. The ultra-serious Jedi are fucking boring.

  18. Bah, SP2 is a good thing on Survey Shows Admins Avoiding SP2 · · Score: 1

All of these stories about SP2 breaking things seem to be coming from businesses running goofy "custom" software. Yeah, there's a lot of that stuff out there. But all of it is shit.

Anybody who has had to admin a corporate network knows that most of the really expensive custom software is incredibly poorly made, and a lot of it requires a specific version of an OS, and specific hardware, to get it to work. Basically, no testing is done on that stuff. They finish it, it works on their hardware, so they start selling it (plus exorbitant yearly service/update contracts) to gullible businesses who have admins that don't know what they're doing.

    This isn't Microsoft's fault.

If SP2 breaks some piece of software you have, bitch to the vendor for an update. If they refuse to update, sue them and switch to a different vendor.

    There AREN'T "easy" techical solutions.

The only real solution is to creat some kind of centralized registry for mailservers. To run a mailserver, you'd have to prove you weren't a spammer, prove your server is configured correctly, etc.

Then, every mail could be checked against the "registry". Basically, a universal "whitelist" system. Obviously, you'd have to have some kind of key-based encryption scheme in there to verify which servers are actually whitelisted.

Of course, doing this would require worldwide cooperation, and most places that run mailservers would have to update/fix their stuff. So it'll never happen.

The only complaint I really have about Linux on the desktop these days is the confusing layout of the filesystem. Which isn't KDE's fault. I hate having programs located in 5 different directories, with their configuration files in yet ANOTHER directory. I'm used to it, and it makes sense in a way. But I'd like to see all non-OS exectuables in their own folder under one "Program Files" folder, along with their configuration files. All the "system" files could go under a "System" folder.

Vonage isn't available in our area yet, but when it comes, our phone service is absolutely fucked. Vonage is what, $25/month for unlimited calls? We charge that much for 500 minutes of calls per month. And, of course, long distance is extra.

But you know what? I don't care. Vonage and it's ilk are GOOD THINGS. There's no reason that all communications systems shouldn't move to IP-based networks. Yeah, it's going to be the end of the "small" service providers, but so what? They're living on borrowed time anyway.

I'm just waiting for high-speed wireless internet to become ubiquitous. Once everyone can snag a couple of megabits out of the air no matter where they are, even the cell phone companies are going to be screwed. Unless, of course, they become wireless internet providers.
