Some of you have probably heard of burning man, but most of those who haven't gone probably don't know that saying that it's just a bunch of naked hippies meeting in the desert to smoke pot, is a very unfair description of the event.
Perhaps Merlin ought to lay off the pipe and actually learn to write a sentence. And an editor actually posted this...
I've been using the OpenOffice.org 2.0 beta for a while, and it's gotten a lot better at opening MS Office files. If you install the MS fonts, it's hard to even see a difference in most files. I regularly use it on MS Office files people send me, and it hasn't failed yet. The beta is just about perfect. But there are some problems still, admittedly.
That's a little like saying having sex with someone who has herpes is usually safe. It's true...it usually is...until it isn't. Don't get me wrong, I like OO but it does have some problems opening Office files, problems that will truly screw over some people who need those files opened properly. You and me may be able to deal with it but Joe, Jane and Aunt Millie won't dig it.
If you get the subtle red arrow. As a test I once waited to see how long it would take to notify me of an urgent browser update (this was the jump to 1.0.6). It took two weeks before I was notified. When it comes to extensions, hell, I'm notified every other day of a brand new version of Tab Browser Preferences or soemthing....not the browser though.
At any rate, you ascribe too much intelligence to people who don't know much more than the bare basics of computer operation. I have intelligent friends that know they're supposed to keep their virus software updated, not run executables they recieve via email and update their browsers, OS, et al and you know what? I still get phone calls asking me to cover over and fix stuff.
Still one of the best mindfucks Jon Stossel ever threw at people...convincing them that dihydrogen monoxide was one of the most dangerous substances known to man and needed to be banned immediately.
Wow, Americans who don't know American history. Shocking. Let me fix that:
French Clippy: "You look like you're trying to fight a war of independence. Would you like our help in exchange for having final say on your trade, diplomatic relations and a voice in Congress?"
I'm probably the only person today who will agree with you. Well said. In an era when government services that one could argue are legitimate needs, I'm not sure why this is one of them. Oh wait, this is Slashdot.
I'll believe it when my open source web browser tells me I have security updates. I just used Firefox's check for updates feature and tells me there are none.
Futureshop also does this with similar pricing. I hate Futureshop with a passion but I have to admit they (or whoever they outsource to) did a good job with the photos I sent them recently.
That's right, real engineers aren't human beings who would be upset to have their work publicly shown to be lacking. They're supremely efficient human beings who engineered their own feelings out.
Real engineers are human beings and it's quite acceptable for someone to get mad before they tackle a problem they helped create.
A true liberal wouldn't call for government enforced sale of a corporation's assets. An authoritarian would, but not a liberal.
There must be a lot of closet authoritarians for this to be modded "Insightful." Probably the same types that scream about the Bush administration being authoritarian...
I'd recommend Thunderbird as an email client but its spam filtering is pathetic. I always tell people to use a third party plug-in like K9 which you can find at http://www.keir.net/k9.html.
Funny, I seem to remember being a member of many Commodore BBS' before Quantum Link went online. Must be my faulty memory.
I guess you haven't been following the news in the U.S.

I suggest you visit the bugs/holes database to see how old some of those potential security exploits are. Some are measured in years.
I like Firefox...look at my sig...but I don't give them that much credit.
Yes, Monroe's personal life away from the movie set certainly proved how very smart she was.
Monroe = Hilton = Blonde and very dumb
Apparently a slow news day in the Games section.
Speaking as a Canadian, nothing wrong with being an American.

Finally the truth is spoken about Canada.
How do you make OS X run snappier? Install it on an Intel-based machine!
The DRM makes the OS runs snappier!
I "definately" hate when people don't "encorperate" spelling during the web site design process.
Or when posting to Slashdot.
Only Jon Katz beats Kevin Kelly in inane predictions that don't come to pass.
Wow, which browser is that? I use Firefox myself.
Answering stupid posts with stupid posts since 1994.
No I use the U.S. English version. And since I originally posted here, I have yet to see the "Updates Available" pop-up. Very impressive.
Meanwhile, Windows XP was patched not long after the patches were released.
