Well Nintendo plans on doing that anyways. That's one of their "grand visions".
A previous story on /. was about Nintendo wanting to plant some 5000 hotspots in Japan for DS comms.

    Yes. I can explain.

In the beginning of the 20th century, Japan was taken over by a western country which abolished many of the very restrictive laws old Japan had. One of the laws they didn't abolish, but rather enforced was the one about censorship.

Japan is very different from the US/Europe. They actually follow laws and take the law as granted. Many artists agree this censorship is stupid, but still do it, as respect to the law and the status-quo. Some even believe the censorship helps your imagination in these scenes.

From the extremely explicit nature of their adult oriented works, you can see it's not the explicity that stops them, it's just the law.

The laws are being relaxed and many non-commercial works (especially doujinshi) is hardly to not censored at all.

In the 19th century and before, it was common to have unisex public baths. It was only when the Western society invaded Japan did they start making the difference.

So the restrictive laws are generally influenced by the western society and due to Japan's nature of slow society change.
As your source said, until 1991 showing pubic hair was censored. But laws change.

The human body is nothing to be ashamed of.
Sex related crimes (and crime in general) is low.

In Europe nudity is not considered "bad", in Japan it's not considered "bad".
Hell, I saw some European commercials showing full nudity, in not too late hours.
In Japan the whole genre of adult games is a huge business and they sell for PC and consoles.

Only in the US and Muslim countries nudity is considered a really bad thing.
And what do we get? The population explodes, full of STDs, unwanted pregnancy and so on.

So. GET A FUCKING GRIP ON YOURSELF! SEX IS NOT BAD. NUDITY IS NOT BAD. IT'S ONLY THE NATURAL THING.

This is not the situation here though.
If a show goes straight to DVD, not passing through TV, the people buying it will be those who have heard about the show before and see the DVDs offered have a good quality/price ratio.

If a DVD is done badly, translation sucks, no editor notes, no song karaoke and an extra price for a useless feature (english dub), people won't buy it.

You are true about the case when there are no other, better, ways of getting the content.

If the companies would have released the DVDs quickly after they aquire the shows, having quality translations that infer the original nuances and don't charge extra for dubs, then people would buy.
