Seriously, no joke. I've done some amazing stuff at Kinko's with heavy paper, a color copier, and lots of glue. Heck, I signed five artists to my repping business on the strength of a Kinko's-produced promotional materials.

Hmmm. I don't get it? The header seemed to refer to some potential BSD deal that was quashed, but the story is talking about VMWare, Microsoft and EMC Corp.
What gives? Did I miss something?
I don't know if you're being serious or not. So I'll answer seriously. I believe that they are referring to the fact that many on Slashdot view Microsoft in general and Bill Gates in particular, as Satan. Satan is generally depicted as having a pointy tail.

Being from Washington state and having driven past Roslyn (the town where "Northern Exposure" was filmed) more times than I'd care to think about (granny lives in Yakima), I may be biased. But I really enjoyed it right up until the end. I think it remained funny and entertaining all the way through its run. Granted, the last season wasn't quite as good as the earlier seasons, but it was still a good show. Many, many series have a down year (or years) and don't get cancelled. Anyhow, just the opinion of someone who watches way too much TV.

Does anyone else remember on Michal Moore's "TV Nation" on Fox when he had a black guy buy a couple of white guys from their families in (I think) Georgia? He took them to a black politician's house and made them do yard work. If I'm remembering right, it was because this state still hadn't passed their own anti-slavery law, but it was on the floor in their state legislature at the time. It ended up being passed.

  7. Re:Cardboard box on PC Parts Storage Solution? · · Score: 1

I'd have to agree with this one. I used to work at a school district, and the entire warehouse was packed with computer bits that were just tossed into cardboard. Everything from memory, to processors, to entire computers, to expansion cards, etc. It looked horrible, but it was fast, cheap and effective. I don't recall ever taking a part out of a box and not having it work. It's really surprising how robust most of that crap is.

  8. Re:What is it good for? on Teach Yourself AppleScript in 24 Hours · · Score: 1

I wrote a semi-automated (as in, easy enough for for high school teachers to use) network-based hard drive image restore system using AppleScript. It booted off a CD, then loaded the image from a network server. Then, after rebooting, it asked a series of questions that properly set the computer's network name, IP address, etc. (Yes, I know there are tools to do all of this automatically. For reasons I'm not going to go into right now [suffice it to say that it was at a school district] they were all unacceptable.) So I'd say, yes it is that useful. You just have to be willing to commit to learning it -- just like any other scripting language.

  9. Re:I imagine Columbine broke Carmack's heart on Masters of Doom · · Score: 1

If I may paraphrase an old truism: If you play a game called "Ride a Bike" can you ride a bike? No. The idea that Doom somehow trained Kliebold and Harris to go shoot up their school is ridiculous. About as ridiculous as blaming Marilyn Manson. In reality, the ones to blame are, a) the kids themselves, and b) the people that made them feel so angry and disenfranchised that they believed they had no alternative. Instead of everyone laying blame, perhaps somebody needs to take responsability (mom and dad, the jocks that beat the hell out of them on a regular basis, etc.).

Therefore, referring to "My DSL line" can be assumed to mean "My Digital Subscriber Line line." Next time you choose to shoot your mouth off and act like a fool, please make sure that you're not shooting your mouth off and acting like an idiot. Incidentally, I also get angry when people refer to "ATM machines."

I don't have nearly as much a problem with the concept of a self-expiring disc as I do with the concept of disposability. I see that they can recycle the discs, but that you (the consumer) will have to pay postage. I think that they will have a lot more success in getting people to send the discs back to them if they are willing to pick up the tab on shipping them back. They can cut costs by not manufacturing disc blanks, the environment doesn't choke, you get a warm fuzzy feeling for doing something good. Everybody wins. My other problem is that it's called "Flexplay" when it is blatantly inflexible. Talk about a misnomer.

The impression I got was that the ads are 300k and must be pre-buffered before they'll start playing. If someone (i.e., me) is still on dial-up, they're going to be sitting on their thumb for about 1 to 2 minutes while they're waiting for that thing to preload. That, I think, would be even more irritating than the 15 second ad itself.

I realize that this may be a "goody-goody" type of attitude, but I believe in it. If they're paying for your advice, then it's your job to advise, despite any discomfort it may cause. There are, of course, good ways and bad ways to tell someone that the way they're doing something sucks. For example, "nice idea, retard" would be a bad way.

Basically, they said that anyone using P2P on company property or with company equipment was fired. As an aside, KZOK also happens to be one the last remaining station (at least in Seattle) that has a working 8-Track hooked to their board.

  25. Waste of money... on Seattle Monorail & California High Speed Rail Move Forward · · Score: 2, Insightful

A monorail is a waste of money in Seattle, because everybody that is going to use mass-transit is already using mass transit. Those that *should* be using mass transit currently can't, and won't be able to with the monorail, because it won't be going far enough north or south. Mass transit is no good if I have to get in my car to get to the transit station. I should be able to walk out of my home to the platform (ala New York).
