Until an autonomous system itself reaches an extremely higher level of maturity/sophistication it’s a long way from coming mainstream. The system, as it stands now cannot see an accident a mile down the road, it can’t see a police officer having pulled someone over on the shoulder of the highway, it can’t see debris in the road. In the 20 truck convoy scenario laid out, the shepherd riding in truck# 1 will not be able to respond/react quickly enough when truck# 17 blows a steering tire.

Once it does reach that level of sophistication, it will only be for general commodities going from and to a distribution point. It will be a very long time before it goes from the loading docks at Bob’s Dog Food and Ink Pens to your local retailers dock.

I’m the shipping manager for a rather large steel company in Texas. Moving steel bridge girders around the country where a single girder weighing in at 156k and 140’ is an everyday occurrence. 300k+ and 200'+ long is not uncommon. But it will be some Star Trek level docking program before these get moved autonomously.

  24. Linux on Forbes on Linux · · Score: 1

A little more than a year ago I bought a version of Linux with the intention to learn the OS and, at the very least, become a liason between Windows users and those wishing for a more stable OS.

But let's face it. Windows is as big as it is because it's biggest customer is "The General Public".
These are not geeks, IT professionals, or CTO's. It's Joe Schmucatelli in his trailer, in the backwoods of Minnesota. It's not Joe Schmanski in downtown St. Louis contemplating a replacement server for his .com

Until the harbingers of Linux make the installation and use as idiot proof as Windows their precious OS will remain in obscurity. Joe Schmucatelli only wants his shit to work and not get bogged down in syntax errors trying to pronounce Linux.

If Linux proponets truely believe in the superiority of this OS, they will have to seriously rethink the presentation of their product to the general public.

  25. Volvo Safety Car on Volvo's "Safety Car" Runs Windows 98 · · Score: 1

Honest officer , the last thing I remember is popping a cd into the player. It immediately spits it out, flying all around the inside of the car. The speakers started yelling "Err-or " "Err-or" like something from 'Lost in Space '. The steering wheel locked up. I tried restarting the car but the ignition just sat there. I'm looking around the car , the wind shield froze over because the A/C tried to restart the car. Then I look in the basckseat, because that's where Volvo said I should look if I have any problems. There's a CD back there that says 'Rescue...something or other .' I go to put that in and can't because now the A/C has frozen the CD player. Some guy, from somewhere starts yelling 'reboot ' 'reboot' , which is of no help since I'm wearing tennis shoes. Then a light comes on, on the dash, telling me to 'defrag in safe mode'. What the hell is that all about ? Next thing I know I'm sitting here on the ground talking to you!
