Huh? I just ran the installer and when doing the MIME extensions to choose which file types for QuickTime to handle, by default it only wants to handle .mov, .pict and other Mac-specific formats. .avi, .mpg, .mp3, etc. etc. it doesn't want to handle unless you specifically set it to. So what exactly are you talking about?

I own a Dell Dimension 8100 (not the exact same, but fundamentally), and have used Power Mac G3's and G4's at work, and I would not say they are the same. However, opening the case and working on the Dell is definitely better than other PC's I've owned. Just to clarify though, with the Power Mac, you just slide open the door with the Power Mac upright and normal...just add whatever memory or whatever else you want and then close the door and its down. With the Dell I have to unplug all of the cables and connectors, turn it over on its side, push on the release button, carefully lift the door off and away from the main case, set the half of the case aside, do whatever work internally I need to do (which can be a bit more difficult given how everything is laid out, specially with the various cables getting in the way), then carefully try and get the door lined up to the slots and carefully fit it back into place, snap everything together, then put it back upright, re-plug all of the cables and connectors and power back on. Compared to other PC's I've had, which often were much more of a pain to get the case off and back on again, it's an improvement, but it's still not quite at where the Power Mac case design is. Aside from everything else, even just the layout of things internally is incredibly well thought out....nothing gets in my way, etc. since I can work on the motherboard independent of the internal cables getting in my.

Aside from it not really capturing the elegance of the lines of the actual design (much like many other PC manufacturer's attempts to mimic the design language Apple is currently employing), it looks like this case doesn't include the swing open door for quick access to the motherboard, which in my opinion is the best part of the Power Mac G3 and G4 case design, hands down. You can see how it swings open here.

This is my favorite function of the Power Mac case design and I wish more PC case designers would lift it.......some of them are getting better, but still haven't found much close to this (the closest I remember was some Toshiba designs where the motherboard could be slid out somehow....not as good, but an interesting start).

At least in the case of .NET, even though it has nothing to do with the actual .NET TLD, it is something that exists. .Mac is completely made-up, and just doesn't make any sense to be to use as a name......if it's just a trendy replacement to use dot (.) instead of i in product naming, I still think it's a bad idea.

It's not that I think they need to have an actual TLD for this, it's just that since there isn't one, .mac doesn't make much sense to me as a service name.

Will just wait and see what the full context of this is I guess.

Hrmm. It just seems so mind-boggling stupid that I can't even fathom it, unless Apple is getting control of a TLD named .Mac, it just seems like this will cause pointless confusion......people trying to go to www.apple.mac, or people confusing this with .NET, or who knows what else. I would really hope that iTools being named .Mac in beta builds is just an internal joke.....it just makes no sense at all as a commercial name, especially for consumer level services.

ThinkSecret is one of the less accurate rumor sites......and I don't think they're even all that good. Look at their explanation for why they are so sure G4 speed bumps won't be announced.....all they are going on is "common sense" that there is a special promotion running right now for current G4's.

And some of their other rumors reported for Macworld New York are patently ridiculous, despite being labeled as 100%....i.e. iTools being renamed .Mac.....which is so inherently stupid it isn't even funny, considering that the name makes no sense at all since it would only cause consumer confusion, especially since there is no .mac TLD to use for such a thing. And it would probably add unnecessary confusion with .NET as well, even though iTools and .NET are not really related technologies or systems at all.

I'm willing to acknowledge that I may just not have seen enough, or maybe I only saw some bad episodes, but could someone who knows a lot about this show explain what makes it brilliant, witty, intelligent, etc.? The serious parts of the show seemed like typical teen drama fare, and I thought the horror parts were kind of generic and cliched. The relationship elements seemed ok, but nothing I would classify as brilliant. Thanks.

  11. Proof on Game Boy Advance RGB LCD Project · · Score: 2, Interesting

Both this project and that Afterburner project (http://www.tritonlabs.com/) seem to be proof that there is currently no good way to make a high quality, cheap, backlit screen for something like the GBA. This project is too unwieldy in terms of battery life and portability, and the Afterburner project, although it integrates directly into the GBA after some modification and soldering, results in the screen being sort of washed out. There will certainly be a backlit GBA at some point, but I think these projects prove that Nintendo is not crazy for not trying to include a backlight in the production GBA, because the technology to do this WELL just isn't there yet. -Tom

Sure they're about being funny too. They do serious songs, but they have well-honed senses of humor and write excellent humorous music too. I don't think this is anything to be ashamed of. It just is another example of their versatility compared to some bands which can't write anything but generic love songs or meaningless music.

  14. Re:Hello Music Club Kills TMBG on Movie Review: Gigantic · · Score: 3, Insightful

Hello Music Club was really a Flans project, not a TMBG project. I don't see any reason to become disillusioned with TMBG because of a side project of one if its members then I would of any band if one of its members did some side project. Both Flans and Linnell have done numerous side project (Flans also did Monopuff, Linnell has done his State Songs album), which probably keeps them sane and makes it so they aren't constantly doing TMBG stuff 24/7/365, which is probably why the band is still around and as creatively fresh as ever. So for that, I will allow for any weird problems with projects like Hello just because it helps keep them around.

The things he criticizes episode 2 for are things he seems to have ignored with episode 1. He also spends a lot of time complaining that seeing the version on film (as opposed to one of the few digital projection theatres or on DVD) did not help. Normally I like Ebert, but I didn't think this review was very good. He seemed to be going through the motions, and didn't go into the awesome amount of detail he normally does when reviewing these kinds of movies (the other 4 star wars movies, the 3 Indiana Jones movies, etc.). -Tom
