I just leave mine ringing, if I have forgotten to switch it off. My friends are often whining at me for not answering, but I explain to them that I have the phone for MY convenience, not theirs. When I have some spare time, I go through my messages. If you REALLY need to contact me, my email client will chime as your message comes in. I'll probably read that before my voicemail.
No single raindrop will take responsibility for the flood.
One message? Is that per company? per dept? Per outgoing address? "No, we sent you ONE message (from admin@corp.com). Also you were sent ONE mail from sales@corp.com. And ONE from sales@corp.net and ONE from sales@corp.biz and one each from our 10,000 subsidiary companies.
Always-on phones. Always-on blue-tooth. All I'll have is an always-out-of-batteries and allways left-at-home phone then. Especially the bit about 'other cars' spamming me. Anything that makes me answer my phone while driving is surely an "Inticement to break the law", a la' Copyright laws? If selling a copying device is an Incitement to use it illegally, surely calling me while you KNOW I am driving is an Incitement to answer my phone? One less thing for me to carry around then.
Sure, base-camping is not nice, if the poor new-spawn can't do anything before getting sniped.
But then, my experience of online FPS is about 20 hours of Counterstrike: Source, 15hours of that on Dust2 map. 25 per team. Plenty of sniping, lots of grenades, and choice of weaponry. And I get BORED sniping. More fun to run around, shooting, retreating, grenading, than sit in one place looking at a cross-hair, waiting for a light pixel near the centre (piece of background in the far distance) to turn dark (Person). BANG. dang, missed.
If there is a sniper rifle and places to snipe from, surely it IS camping? I'm not saying its good or bad, but isn't that what camping is? Settling down with a sniper rifle till someone walks past?
Banning of particular words or actions has always lead to some absolutely wonderful, creative, thoughtful advertising. Look at the Guiness adverts, cigarete adverts, etc.
Not being able to say "Fadein, big Olympics logo, Eat at Big Joes Cafe, the Gold Standard, Fade out" will cause advertisers to actually THINK about what to do. Probably lots of "nearly crossing the line, but not quite". Not allowed to say "London Games"? try "Sporting Events in The Capitol". The phrase "Desreves a medal as big as a dustbin lid" can be refferenced by showing a child in running vest with a bin-lid round their neck. Come on, advertisers - work for your money. Prove to me that you can be creative.
IMHO not being able to say "The Gold Medal of Washing Powders - New and Improved for London 2012!" is a good thing.
"giving modders tools to create "Hot Coffee" type games."
Modders have always had tools to put their own content on computers. The problem with the "hot coffee" content was that the game publisher supplied it. The tools were never the problem.
Oh yes. The other part about review scores is that they very rarely have much consistency! 8o)
But if all of the scores come out at "above average" then surely they have been reviewing above-average products? 8o)
Finding a site/magazine/friend that you can trust to give you honest info is not easy. I usually read several reviews and disregard the actuall scores. Some have a breakdown, with comments:
Price: 8/10 - cheap, but not cheap enough Features: 9/10 - just missing wireless. Value: 7/10 - I can get a wireless one for this price...
Oh, I agree totally about the spelling - that is why I included the "nu-speek" version. But language changes, and Donut, thru, nite, hi and other spellings will come to be the "usual" way. Wether we like it or not. (sic)
As another aside - I am from UK, where we still spell with those "u"s in the middle of words - the "proper" way. Where did the "Z" in your nick come from? Surely not a corruption of the well-known acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation?
"So a site where most scores are between 90% and 100%, and no game since Daikatana dipped under 80%, is trying to tell me... what? That _all_ games are way above average? Then how is it an average?"
Statistics (especially Review scores) are inherently based upon their context.
A Score of 95/100 usually means "Not bad, will play for a few days" and a score of 99/100 means "Go away. playing game. fetch food."
A score of 82/100 means "it is already being used as a coaster".
I usually treat the scores not as being on a 1-100 scale but a 80-100 scale.
It's like pinball - a score of 1,264,758,454,265,700 is embarrassing. Can be racked up in 10 minutes.
Scores are based upon context. 15 is not to good in a tennis game, but very impressive in soccer.
Yes, the games reviewers put a "%" sign by their scores. they are not using it as a "per hundred" scale, but as a "We know how to get shift-characters" sign.
He COULD afford to pay for a laptop. He now has a laptop. He then moved house, and is temporarily without much in the way of liquid assets. Ratehr than sell his 2nd hand laptop for a huge loss(both financially and ability-to-do-his-job-as-a-programmer-wise), he chose to keep his laptop and skimp on furniture costs until his outgoing stabilise. Priorities? Not misplaced at all. He then saw an opportunity to tell some geeks about his "new use for old stuff" (which has long been an interest of geeks).
Publicity stunt? no more than your post trying to publicise your views/opinions.
Parent modded as interesting? Not by me. I'd rather look at a flat furnished with UPS boxes than read such judgemental tripe.
It is not so much about what you can do in the privacy of your own home, but what you can sell in the open market, and what you can say about its compatibility with another company's product. If you want to sell your vibrating xbox controller, you will either have to apply to MS for a licence or not put "XBOX" on the product.
You will be being charged for the licence every time you buy a 3rd party accessory. The companies producing the accessories will factor the licence cost into their retail prices. Whether the accessories will work properly or not is yet to be seen.
Hmmm... Maybe we won't see prices drop this week, but in the longer term they will.
PCs used to cost a lot more, ( I lose count of the number of people who payed £1000+ for a 486-DX25) but are now available for under £300. And for a lot higher spec. In a free market, cheaper parts MUST lead to cheaper retail prices, as competition forces prices down. If one company decides not to pass on savings, another will.
Anyone remember how much the CHEAPEST mobile phone cost in 1980?
Sure, top-end phones will continue to be expensive - just as top-end PCs are still expensive. We now have more flexibility from entry-level Wal-Mart £199 to Mega-Gaming System with Alienware badge and more.
"in the UK, Mobiles are already stupidly expensive, "
My camera-phone with MMS and email cost me £29. I'm on Virgin (expensive) pay-as-you-go, and use about £5/month on calls.
Video-phones with 2-meg cameras, 3" colour-screens, Windows-Functionality, polyphonic ringtones, 1gig storage will be more expensive - but are no longer just a "phone". Nearer to a PDA or mini-laptop.
"I have to say, I fully, 100% agree with the right of an employer to terminate you, for any reason they see fit. Whether you're fraternizing with co-workers after work, shagging the bosses daughter, or running a porn business on the side, it doesn't matter... the right of employment should always sit with the//employer//. They should not be forced to employ anyone."
"What happens off the clock is no business of the company, and if they don't like it, too bad."
So you are OK for being fired for not telling the company what you do in your off hours? You are OK for Managers to fire people for being black, female, homosexual, Christian, eating bananas... Yet you say it is no business of the company what people do outside of work hours? How do you reconcile these two views?
A reason to GPL it? Sure. And my reason would be "Because they can".
Is there a reason to keep this old, obsolete compiler, that may have some interesting sections (if only from a historic perspective), as a proprietry, closed system?
Maybe it can be improved/updated and end up being a real rival for modern compilers. Kept locked, we would never know. GPLed we at least have the option.
Who is it going to piss off? Mozzilla Corporation shareholders? i.e. the Mozilla Foundation (Sole Shareholders). Non-shareholders? Who cares? No-one took any notice when I complained about (Insert company I have no shares in) doing (Insert action I disagrtee with).
The only spin they need is "We are following the desires of our shareholder. "

Most seem to start "If only they would
Or "Have they never heard of
Well I'm not sure, but I beleive that they do actually have some experts on the team.
And yes, it IS Rocket Science.
How many slashdotters out there (especially the ones with the pet theories) are rocket scientists?

If there is a sniper rifle and places to snipe from, surely it IS camping?

In reply to an article about BPL, a post about some possible downsides of BPL is offtopic?
Ah, was it the "first post" text in the title? Does that get an auto-mod-down nowadays?
POST IS ON TOPIC.
MODERATORS, DO YOUR JOB PROPERLY PLEASE.
Excellent.

Don't miss the Full-Sped USB!
"The G7 and G5 are Logitechs first computer mice to leverage full-speed USB. "
Now checking on http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm , we find that
"Full Speed" refers to USB 1.1, while High-Speed (Or "Hi-Speed") refers to USB 2.
So Logitech are bragging about their USB 1.1 mice?
