Start by defining the services you deliver. For example, email. The exec's don't care about your internet connectivity uptime, server disk space, etc. They care about services they consume, and the availability and cost of those services.
So, think about it from the perspective of the execs going shopping to replace you. They'd go to IBM and give them a list of what they want from IBM, in language that you'd expect from a business-focused non-technical user. Now build that list in your head, and associate the underlying components with each of those services and start monitoring both the service and the components, and report back on the service availability quarterly.
Next, they'll ask you how much each of those services cost (they're always looking to cut costs, be ready and surprise them with a list, and demonstrate how you're the best choice.)
Lithium Polymer batteries require regular discharge/charge cycles or the chemicals in them crystallize, leaving you with a nice paperweight.
The best thing you can do to preserve LiPo battery life is to run plugged in, without the battery in the laptop, and use the battery only when needed. Once a month drain the battery and recharge it.
A more practical use is to keep it in the laptop, provide adequate ventilation to keep it cool, and discharge/charge monthly.
Also, when the battery seems discharged it actually isn't, there's a protective circuit in most LiPo batteries to prevent a complete discharge as this would damage the battery. The funny thing is if after this protection circuit kicks in some times the batteries will build a bit more of a charge up and allow you to continue to use them. This also really ruins LiPo batteries. When the protection circuit kicks in, it's doing it to protect the battery and you should charge it prior to use, not force a few more minutes of use out of it.
And this is exactly why home computers and laptops fail after a few months of use - they're turned on and off almost daily. I'm surprised they last a week.
Servers (which are built from almost identical hardware in a rack-mount form factor) are doomed should someone try something this crazy.
Won't this just interfere with everyone elses WiFi? What if I want to run my own wireless network? Obviously there are lots of channles to choose from, but won't they pretty much dominate them all due to the nubmer of hotspots?
Read the ISC posts re the DLL re-registering. Opening the WMFs in certain apps will cause them to re-register the DLL, open the file, and infect you. See the Lotus Notes updates for an example of such an app.
This is sad. Over and over slashdot is posting stories with nothing more than some lame tech review and dozens of ads. I really believe people are generating sites with crap technical content, packing them with ads, and submitting to slashdot hoping to win the impression/click lottery.
Please editors, check the sites out first. If it's 90% ads and impossible to navigate without clicking ads accidentally, it's just some losers cash-grab site.
This is so coincidental.. Just YESTERDAY I was at the doctors, I suspected I was coming down with Carpal Tunnel.
I've used PCs (and TRS-80s, Apple IIes, etc etc) since I was 8. I'm 29 now, and am in serious pain as I type this.
I had NEVER experienced any typing related pain. Then two weeks ago, I woke up in the night with pain in my wrists. I thought hey no biggie, I must have slept on it funny. Nope. It came back again that week, and then again. The pain grew QUICKLY - It's not a slow progression, it snowballs.
I'm typing this in braces, and hope I won't be permanently disabled (CTS deteriorates your median nerve).
I really don't know what to do - I was just at the doctor yesterday and am still in shock and very scared.
While information is the cornerstone of our ability to provide superior service, our most important asset is our customers' trust. Keeping customer information secure, and using it only as our customers would want us to, is a top priority for all of us at Citibank as a member of the Citigroup family of companies. Here then, is our promise to our individual customers:
1. We will safeguard, according to strict standards of security and confidentiality, any information our customers share with us.
2. We will limit the collection and use of customer information to the minimum we require to deliver superior service to our customers, which includes advising our customers about our products, services and other opportunities, and to administer our business.
3. We will permit only authorized employees, who are trained in the proper handling of customer information, to have access to that information. Employees who violate our Privacy Promise will be subject to our normal disciplinary process.
4. We will not reveal customer information to any external organization unless we have previously informed the customer in disclosures or agreements, been authorized by the customer, or are required by law.
5. We will always maintain control over the confidentiality of our customer information. We may, however, facilitate relevant offers from reputable companies. These companies are not permitted to retain any customer information unless the customer has specifically expressed interest in their products or services.
6. We will tell customers in plain language initially, and at least once annually, how they may remove their names from marketing lists. At any time, customers can contact us to remove their names from such lists.
7. Whenever we hire other organizations to provide support services, we will require them to conform to our policy standards and to allow us to audit them for compliance.
8. For purposes of credit reporting, verification and risk management, we will exchange information about our customers with reputable reference sources and clearinghouse services.
9. We will not use or share - internally or externally - personally identifiable medical information for any purpose other than the underwriting or administration of a customer's policy, claim or account, or as disclosed to the customer when the information is collected, or to which the customer consents.
10. We will attempt to keep customer files complete, up to date, and accurate. We will tell our customers how and where to conveniently access their account information (except when we're prohibited by law), and how to notify us about errors which we will promptly correct.
We will continuously assess ourselves to ensure that customer privacy is respected. We will conduct our business in a manner that fulfills our promise in the many nations in which we do business.
My parents split up years ago, and each have remarried. They both have computers, Dad has a PC (xp), mom has a Mac.
I'm CONSTANTLY supporting that damn PC. I friggin hate it. Him and his kids ARE to blame in a way, they see a popup and they click it. "is your system slow?" hell yes, click that fast and install whatever it is.. You can imagine the pain I feel.
My Mom on the other hand has a Mac, a new iBook, and my Grandpa who lives with here, 88yrs old, has a DUAL G5 (damn I'm jealous). Guess how many viruses/spyware/trojans/worms/whatever I've ever had to deal with?? NONE.
I will NEVER buy another PC. I own an iBook now, and will NEVER go back to that damn MS OS. I'd use linux, but I don't like the gui. (go ahead, start flamin, but it's my opinion and it's final, I just don't like it.. I run dozens of production server using linux, but hate the GUI).
Can't wait for my Mac Mini to ship.. Goin right in the living room.
I was installing XP Pro TODAY, and was infected in under 15 mins, blaster. So I figured ok, no problem, reformat/reinstall and this time without network connectivity until AFTER the install is done and I've enabled the software firewall on the interface.
GUESS WHAT? I was infected, even WITH THE MS FIREWALL ENABLED!! Not with blaster, I don't know what it was. But my browser went nuts, and started opening all sorts of porn. All I did was go to windows update, and install SP1. Shortly after rebooting and trying to DL the next thousand MS patches, I was infected with pr0n worm.. WTF?
Anyhow, the ONLY way I know of to do this without getting WORMED is using a natting HW Firewall. The MS firewall must drop its pants at some point.
I worked (as a contractor) for a large company in Omaha. They didn't pay me overtime but billed the company I was consulting with at 1.5x for anything over 40. I asked the company how they could bill the client and not pay me OT and they didn't have any good answers. Since I didn't see any of that pay I decided to do something about it and called the Nebraska labour board or whatever it's called. Turns out if the company is bigger than x million $$/year they fall under Federal jurisdiction and the Federal labour board says you DO get paid overtime if you make less than some figure. This applies to every state including California of course.
They were VERY helpful and tried to involve as many employees in the investigation as possible (so as to help as many people in one investigation as possible). In the end I got a few grand back. (I remember one timesheet with over 179 hours in a 2 week period, yes thats right 179 in 2 weeks..)

You're actually doing more harm than good.

If you've got that kind of coin, buy two. Seriously, fuck off with your 'oh look at me I'm traveling and need a toy' post.
I've really enjoyed it. It was well written and told a great and entertaining story.
You can download free chapters at http://www.commodorebook.com/
They offered free shipping when I bought mine from the site.
That's not going to work too well against large rainbow tables.. Who brute forces with the availability of rainbow tables now?
This works well for me - I was thinking of purchasing an ibook, and this just helps to de-value the older ibooks making it cheaper for me.. =)
Won't this just interfere with everyone elses WiFi? What if I want to run my own wireless network? Obviously there are lots of channles to choose from, but won't they pretty much dominate them all due to the nubmer of hotspots?
Re no upgrade versions -
Just what OS would the windows installer be "upgrading"? Have you ever actually tried to run a MS upgrade install? IT LOOKS FOR AN EXISTING MS OS.
Think about it before posting..
Ya, they thought of this a while ago (like 1980s) when they built the MacOS and OSX.
It's a dream.
I'm surprised more people don't know this.
THAT DOES NOT WORK.

Are you seriously complaining about someone else's English? Ouch it hurt my brain to read your post.
I strongly recommend Winnipeg..
Anyone have any idea? Can it play divx's/xvid's? I have a large collection I'd want to put on it..
I doubt it!

Anyone hosting a torrent for the exeem beta?
I'd check suprnova.org but you know... lol

Not everyone reading slashdot lives in the repressed USA.. I for one live in Canada, where rockets (TOYS) are still legal..
Man, the US... Land of the free.
I'm not too worried, I live in Canada. It's a little better here.
Maybe Canada will have to occupy the US soon to liberate it. =P
