We all as consumers have a choice...

However, some of us, as linux zealots/advocates/users, have a limited choice of games we are able to use/enjoy/whatever...

You are only Bioware's customer if you purchased the game. If you purchased the game because they said they were developing a Linux client, good for you... They did what they said they would do... Did they say there were going to make it easy? Did they say that a Linux installer would be released?

Look at the box for your NWN cd's... I don't imagine you'll find 'Linux' under supported operating systems, regardless of what you read on Bioware's website...

I personally, was eagerly awaiting release of the linux client so that I could stay in my SuSE distro more than my WinXP installation. I applaud Bioware's efforts to release a Linux client, as my friends and I enjoyed playing multiplayer on my Slackware server using the dedicated Linux server.

Instead of bashing Bioware for a less than perfect Linux implementation, how about applauding them for bothering to support linux at all?

  6. MS OK'ing Linux on XBOX? No Way on Linux Xbox Project Seeks Microsoft Signature · · Score: 0, Redundant

There is no way MS is going to endorse running Linux on the XBox gaming platform... They lose money on every console sold, so the way they make money is to sell games...

That being said, the XBox is a pretty cheap PC, and if MS would enable the XBox to run Linux w/o modding it, they would be helping to shoot themselves in the foot...

Even disregarding the money issue (MS losing money per XBox, not gaining $100k for helping to get Linux running on XBox) MS is not going to support running an OS on XBox... It's not like you can run WinXP on your XBox either. Why? Because they want you to buy an entire PC, and pay for a windows license...

At least Bioware RELEASED a Linux Ded-Server, almost as soon as the game was released... They could have just waited and developed/released it when the client is ready

As soon as the publisher changed, they could have just said 'Infogrames has made us cease development on the Linux ver, sorry guys' People would have been pissed, but I for one, would still be buying all future products released by Bioware... I have so many hours of gameplay into NWN, it's unbelievable... Replay value (for me) is almost infinite due to the differences between one char and the next...

As far as 'seasonal' release dates, it's called a 'ballpark' figure... They give you a range, so that we have a date to look forward to the release, and they have some breathing room... They could have been like 3drealms, and just said when its done' :P

In any event, I'm more inclined to appreciate the effort Bioware is putting into getting the Linux client out, and not so prone to attack them for the delay....

  13. Fujitsu HDD Failures are quite common on Have Fujitsu Harddrives Been Failing in Record Numbers? · · Score: 2, Informative

Until recently I worked as a technician in a retail computer shop, and we had terrible luck with Fujitsu hard drives, the MPG3204AT in particular. Some drives wouldn't detect at all on POST, most just had the "click of death", and as a result were subjected to the "freezer of doom" so we could try and rescue some of the customer's data (not that it usually helped)

Maxtor/Seagate/WD drives seem to be quite a bit more reliable, but one of the OEM's we were buying premade systems from was using "Fush*tsu" drives, so we encountered quite a few of them (I'd say at least 50% failure rate)

We also had problems with MSI K7T Pro mainboards we recieved from the same OEM, so it could just be we were getting shafted w/ known-bad product.

In any event, in the past few months I've seen the same articles on The Reg and other spots, and I'm not at all surprised to have seen it.

It may be news to some of you that Fujitsu has subsequently pulled out of the desktop HDD business (they still manufacture laptop and enterprise drives) Fujitsu's Hard Drive Lineup

Anyway, eveyone is going on about how hard drives are 'near disposable' nowadays... Perhaps the hardware itself is, but the data stored on the drives is quite often more valuable than the media it is stored on.

I really couldn't care if my sound card died, it's cheap to replace, and I can get a better one without any loss of personal data. Same for speakers, etc... Losing a hard drive can be quite distressing to average users, who don't have a backup system implemented.

People have been making dubs of friends' music since recording devices were available to the public... The internet only changed the method in which the music was pirated, and probably not the numbers...

I've got 30 or so gigs of Albums on my drive, some of which I own, some which I don't (many hard to find, indies and such) Looking at the $10,000 or more (CDN, so about a buck fifty those of you in the states ;) of CD's in my CD case, I really don't feel bad about it having 'near CD quality' copies of a few albums...

I play pirated games, if they're good, I buy them... the same goes for music... Piracy is just a tool to help me make educated purchases.
