    In Tahoe, it would be a fairly normal winter. Or have you forgotten that California is a large state and has a rather tall mountain range covering most of the eastern edge of it?

    Except through my history of owning an iphone a number of apps have gone from the purchase model to ad supported model via updates that listed no such thing in the documentation of what the update does. I've deleted or not updated every one that has done so, but still...

    It's a problem with the iphone and probably other platforms that is not talked about much. Being very weary about updating. I have way too many apps that I will not update for various reasons. Generally a bad habit to get people used to...

    Really?

    Last time I was in Beijing I could get a good multi course meal for about $15 to $20 per person. Cheap but much more than the 50 cents you allege.
    there is almost always a 2 for a dollar candy bar deal at my local supermarket...

    Most of the windows users I support or know use Yahoo for search. Even the more technically minded ones. I suspect it's because at one point they had a ISP dictated homepage in partnership with yahoo they never changed and now think of yahoo as search. I use "google" as a verb and search with it in front of them all the time and it does nothing to get them to switch.

    I've used Bing and it is a perfectly good search engine. I could picture switching from google if they continue to add more crap to their search page. As it is now I will hit the link to google and start typing and the first few characters don't show up because of all the other services loading at the top of the page. Used to not be like that...

    I get it with the mobile version but the desktop OSX? Really? The same desktop OSX that recently gained UNIX certification with all that entails?

    First off: Duh! I get how LCI's work. I'm asking if other phones will suffer the same effect or are they somehow better sealed or insulated against environmental extremes. And if not then why is this specifically leveled against Apple and not the cell phone industry as a whole?

    I think it's more jailbroken ipod touches than phones. My nephews indicate that jailbroken (correct word?) ipod touches are very common among the grade school set, and their ipods were chock full of games they downloaded for free...

    Back in 1982 or 1983, the reading list was:

    Dune
    Stand on Zanzibar
    Stranger in a strange land
    Siren's of Titan
    Left hand of Darkness

    Today I would swap out Stand on Zanzibar for something cyberpunk and probably Siren's of Titan for something more modern. Dune and Stranger in a strange land have aged better and are more classic IMO. I was never that great of a fan of Left hand of Darkness...

    And go beyond the web. The problems with good CMYK implementation has been talked about quite a bit but what I rarely have seen mentioned is Pantoneï. Corporate art departments live on pantone colors and swatch books for anything printed, painted or applied. If the program doesn't have Pantone it's too limited to be a professional app in the print arena. Pantone charges for it's technology, therefore is unlikely to be in Open Source apps.

    Now if someone would come up with an open source alternative with printed swatch books...

    To add to that:

    If you took a completely alien language, encrypted it. Compressed the hell out of it, then applied 10,000 to a million years of technological advancement to the sending of it, would we even be able to notice it from background noise? Even if radio was still used to send it?

    Having worked in the disk mines of IBM many years ago, the SCSI disk controller is somewhat your pixie dust but the real reason is the disks, heads and other parts for the SCSI drives came from IBM's best manufacturing facilities. The deathstar ATA drive's parts came from the lesser manufacturing facilities. In theory a SCSI disk should not be much better than ATA but the reality is the best made, more reliable parts go to the high end more profitable products.

    There are places in the bay area that would be entirely unfazed by your rifle and NRA tee-shirt but you have to seek them out. But, considering the fact housing is dense enough that to safely and legally hunt deer you would have to drive 2 to 3 hours away, it's not too surprising you got the response you did. Drive that 2 or 3 hours and you will get the reception you want without looking for it. California is a big and diverse state. Generalizations about it usually usually indicate a lack of experience with it.
