  1. Hardly Free on Intel Linux Driver Version 1.0 For Centrino WLAN · · Score: 4, Informative

Use of this driver requires that you download Intel firmware which is covered by a very non-free and restrictive license.

I urge you to write to Intel and let them know that you are dissatisfied with their license and that you want the ability to freely distribute their firmware.

Please note that nobody is asking them to open the source of their firmware--they just need to make it so that free operating systems can distribute their firmware without having to force their users to agree to this licensing.

First off, don't listen to anybody that says the OpenBSD is not fit for heavy-duty serving or that FreeBSD is easier. I used FreeBSD for over seven years before switching to OpenBSD this year. OpenBSD is defintely server-capable (we run it here) and not just for firewalls. There is excellent documentatio available at http://www.openbsd.org/faq/. IMHO, it's the best documentation for any free OS. You will especially appreciate how easy it makes learning the pf firewall.

    2) My drives are currently ext3; will BSD recognize that?

I don't want to say "no" because I'm not 100% sure but invariably, I'm happier using the native fs. My advice is to back up your files to CD-R or DVD-ROM and then restore them after reinstall.

    Good luck!

You're better off with a real laptop backpack. I love my JanSport pack--I think it's the "Firewire" model. I bought mine at the mall and probably paid about $100 than I would have paid at eBags. I carried a heavy Apple TiBook, along with books and cables, on a business trip to New Zealand. My laptop survived six flights, five hotels, and countless bus rides without a scratch.

  13. Buyer Beware! on E-bike E-xperiences? · · Score: 1

Hey, before you go drop $1000 on an electric bike, you need to consider this question: who is going to work on your bike when it inevitably breaks? Scanning through the thread and looking at web pages, I can tell you that pretty much every one of these "e-Bikes" has an electric motor mounted on a department store-grade bicycle. The motor drive makes up the lion's share of the bike's cost and you are ending up with a cheap steel (probably not even chro-moly) frame, crappy no-name low-grade derailluers and heavy, poorly-constructed steel wheels.

As a guy who grew up in his family's bicycle stores, let me tell you, I highly doubt that you are going to be able to find anybody to work on your e-bike when it breaks. Bike shops are usually reluctant to work on department store-grade bikes because you often end up breaking them even more when trying to fix them. Even if you have the mechanical skills to repair your own bike, the parts they use are often of non-standard size and replacements are not usually available. Keep in mind, I'm just talking about the bicycle that this e-bike is based on. When your local bike shop sees the motor on the wheel, they are going to cry.

Please, do yourself a huge favor and go to your locally-owned bicycle store and pick yourself up a quality name-brand bicycle. We sell Trek, Klien, and Gary Fisher, but Specialized and Cannondale are also pretty good, too. For the price of your e-bike, you'll get a high quality aluminum frame, durable Shimano components, tough aluminum alloy wheels, and a friendly local dealer who will gladly repair your bike if it breaks. At our store, customers get a free 30-day tune-up and subsequent minor adjustments are generally free for the first couple of years.

If you *really* don't want the life-improving effects of cycling and want power-assist, go get yourself a cheap, used Honda scooter or something.

    Good luck,

    Chris

A Chessie is NOT afraid to knock a perp over and stand on them snarling in there face and only bite if necessarly till help arrives without any training in protection work.

The only problem with Chessies is that they are not suited to everybody. As I'm sure you know, they can also be food-protective and their wariness of strangers can lead to problems. A dog that attacks burglars is good but I've also had mine charge at neighbors who are walking down the sidewalk. You have to assert your dominance if you're going to own a chessie.

Well, with the exception of diseases like Parvo--but this disease is not very common and will be very obvious within a few days of adopting a dog. If you adopt a dog, take it to the vet for a thorough check-up and you and pup will be fine.

Yeah, you aren't kidding. There are definitely some people around there who might want this. My girlfriend and I just got back from a trip to the area. Here are some pictures of one such ranch. I'll leave it to the readers to figure out whose ranch this is, but here's a hint: look at the sign--he makes clothing. This guy owns an insanely large peice of some of the prettiest land in the Unitied States. He has a very expensive-looking fence around the property and, believe me, it goes on for miles. I heard a funny story about his fence...if you know about ranch fencing, you know that you build a wooden fence with the railings on the inside edge of the fence posts. This way, your cattle don't push the railings out. Well, supposedly, Mr. RL didn't like the way this looked so he had his people reverse the railings--at enormous expense--to make it look pretty.

On a side note, there is a National Forest Access road through his property. We drove down it and I had to pee. To my girlfriend's horror, I got out and peed on his fence. Yes, now I can say that I have pissed on Mr. RL's fence. :)
