That's funny, I have a WY tattoo like that, but it starts off "When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary,", etc. and ends with some guy "Elbridge Gerry"'s signature. Gives yo' momma something to read for an hour, etc. etc.

My band is titanium (and hers is expensive, hey-o!), it's strong and light, jet fighters and guns are made from it, and you can etch your anniversary into the inside... good for forgetful types. Plus it's not impossible to get titanium bands, and it has a bit of geek factor without being ridiculous like iridium which probably will end up causing cancer or some crap.

  7. Purpose of these book reviews? on Bottom of The Barrel Book Reviews-Confessions of a Recovering Preppie · · Score: 1

Reviewing a popular book and commenting in this way would be useful and funny to all of us, since popular books and authors already get a lot of positive press, and the negative comments can be viewed as a roast in most cases.

However, in the case of a truly bad book, these effects of a bad review are reversed. For example, if the purpose of this review was to get people to laugh at a bad author, it's unfortunate that the humor has to come at his expense because the book apparently truly is bad. There are bad books and authors, and producing negative comments about a bad book seems to me like writing a dissertation on how annoying it is that annoying people are in fact, really annoying.

Additionally, if the purpose of this review was to get people to not read the book, again I believe this review probably got this guy more press in one day than he ever would have received in his lifetime. Now he will likely sell many copies of the book he never would have sold, so there again I'm not sure about the purpose of the review.

The moral: This comment is or isn't funny to the /. audience for the same reason that the review is or isn't funny to the /. audience.

Maybe we could make it so that advertising dollars help cut the cost of this model, and so the more popular stations would cost less to listen to. Then we could make them a la carte options on some sort of subscription basis.... then we could put that whole thing on radios that use satellite signals so you can listen to it anywhere! Nah, nothing like this "satellite radio" could ever work, right?

When my dad was still working as a professor, he had an entire multi-shelf bookcase of nothing but free books being sent on a regular basis as samples that he could order for his class. People would send all sorts of free stuff but towards the end of his career, the free books were arriving fast and furious. If you want a free textbook, I can almost guarantee you could stop by the teacher's place at office hours and either borrow one of their likely many copies of the class book, or simply offer to buy one for cheap. (Note: this works if they didn't write the book for the class)

  11. Doesn't work until it does on Amateur Scientists Seek Fusion Reaction · · Score: 2, Insightful

Sure, it seems incredibly hard, but that's only because we don't know what the solution is yet that will go from where we are to the final version, just like airplanes pre-Wright Brothers. Any hobbyist building a reactor knows that all these posts about how impossible it is for a hobbyist to build one of these that produces useful power are going to seem really stupid once someone can build one that does produce useful power.

If you know where the killer's house is in order to draw this donut around it, why not just go there and arrest them? If you're arguing that the killing is in a donut, there are an infinite number of donuts that a killing could belong to, so I don't see how that helps you find the killer's house if you have any less than 3-4 body(ies) in different location(s) that are actually arranged in a donut around a central location.

  15. Re:insane on Apple's Market Cap Exceeds Google's · · Score: 1

Apple's stock is speculation inflated, by the same process that bank stocks are being speculation deflated (people are betting for apple based on their positive sales results in a bad economy, vs. against banks based on the current mortgage issues).

This type of speculation makes people like Warren Buffet rich, because they sell apple when it's inflated and buy the banks when they're deflated.
