  1. Re:Cost cutting a little out of control? on Microsoft Sued Over Fall Update Issues · · Score: 1

Not that we disbelieve your BIL, but I can't tell you the number of times I've heard this. "My browser won't load some web site." "It needs cookies, are you running software that blocks 'em?" "No." A day later, "Oh, it turns out my dad put blocking software on the computer." You don't say. See also approximately 600 episodes of Shark Tank.

. But, a machine that destroys your $60 game disks, that can't be easily backed up, because you bumped into the entertainment center is unacceptable IMO.

Exactly what are people doing where they're bumping into the entertainment center, getting out of control while playing DDR? Notwithstanding that, the device should, in fact, not be quote so sensitive that it does this.

I guess when you're selling systems at a loss the urge to cut costs wherever you can is pretty strong.

Well, people want stuff cheap these days, and they don't really care much, in general, about what they're giving up to get cheap (i.e., quality). There's no other way to explain the success of Wal-Mart, and most everyone else seems to be following suit. What's the solution? I dunno--don't buy stuff predicated on the shaver/razor blade sales model? Don't let cost be your sole determining factor when you buy stuff?

Good grief, the sailing wasn't that bad. They put teleporters all over the place so you don't have to sail for ages. Admittedly, access to them comes later than you'd like, but it generally doesn't take more than a minute or so, and probably less, to sail across any given grid on the map.

True about smaller bills; not sure that's the way they'd go. Note that this isn't a problem for bills with holes in them instead.

As for vending machines, I'd need to see a more authoritative source: cash registers vastly outnumber vending machines.

I'm not objecting to putting women on money, but there should be a better reason to do it than for the sake of doing it.

I've lived in places were the $1 Sacajawea and SBA coins were in moderately widespread use.

Ever heard of the broken windows fallacy? It works like this: someone breaks a store window. The shopkeep comes out, upset, until the glass man comes by and points out that by buying that new window, the shopkeeper is stimulating the economy. Well, that's all true--but the money he spent on the window, he might've used for more supplies, or towards a bigger shop or something, that would've provided a more far-reaching economic benefit.

Every dollar spent replacing perfectly fine cash registers and vending machines is a dollar NOT spent on inventory, salary, expansion, etc.

This is pointless, since if Linux is gonna stick with GPLv2, as it is perfectly able to, GPLv3 is utterly moot--in fact, GPLv3 could be taken directly from the Microsoft Windows EULA and it still wouldn't matter to Linux, because there's no reason software has to "upgrade" it's copyright/left.

Feeling particularly obtuse today? Wal-Mart is forced to sell certain equipment at MSRP if they want to sell it at all. While many things they sell cheaper, a lot of their electronics aren't. Wanna buy a Nintendo DS (or, in fact, any console?) You'll maybe save 53 cents buying it at Wal-Mart over buying it at Gamestop. Even Wal-Mart's behemoth-like size can't force Nintendo or Sony to give them a deal better than anyone else.

If you need to start bombarding people with thousands of messages to find the good words you're just going to drive more people into using filters--and this will almost certainly coerce ISPs into doing more filtering as well. Plus, you've got to deal with the issue of keeping data on all those users to find out which words are good for them. This would require you to tailor your spam to each individual user, which probably is going to increase the cost to the spammer (at least in terms of disk storage and time, anyway) and, as Graham-cumming implemented it, is going to fail utterly for anyone who isn't viewing mail as HTML, anyway.
