  1. DirectX 10? on Budget Graphics Cards Compared · · Score: 1

Will any of these cards even work in DirectX 10? Tomorrows games will all require it, so unless you want to replace your card again this time next year, why bother? What cards currently support DX10, anyways?

Yeah, really, I don't understand that. OSX users are a rare breed compared to Windows users. Perhaps he's just a disgruntled Linux user who was hoping his OS of choice would sit in the spotlight OSX is currently getting. No such luck.

Jealously is a pretty funny thing.

  3. No component 1080i output? No buy! on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Talks End · · Score: 1
I spent a lot of money investing in a second gen HDTV set. It only does 1080i via component. Yet all these players will only allow some 3rd and most 4th gen and beyond HDTVs to view content via HDMI. Most sets out there today are still 1st-3rd gen, which makes a lot of the consumers who helped fund the move to HD content are going to be screwed unless we buy entirely new sets to view the content at 1080i.

I wont be buying into either format until they support component output.

And yeah, I know players will be released with "backdoor" codes that will allow me to do this, but that defeats the point.

I bought into this, now I want the content.

  4. Your arguement has failed. Here's why. on Land of the Rising Fun · · Score: 1
Sure, we have seen Japan release over a dozen Final Fantasy games, six plus Zelda games, five or so Metroid games, etc etc. That was your point, that its all being rehashed, right? How many of those are actually rehashes? Oh yeah, that's right, not many. The difference here is we may see twelve Final Fantasy game releases, but they are all so vastly DIFFERENT that I think it would even be a disservice to even call it a "rehash". Take a look at the Zelda games, or all the Mario ones. They are all ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. Now, take a look at Halo, Medal of Honor, PGR, and every other western game. They are the SAME. They all play the same, they look the same, and frankly, they could all be mistaken for any game in the series.

There is a huge difference between cultures here. Japan likes to make their sequels new and unique, while everywhere else seems to repackage the same damn game over and over.

And yeah, Spore look amazing. But do we really need another Halo, PGR, MoH, Elder Scrolls game etc etc etc to get to one lousy decent and unique game?

If this was so, why were their competitor (Echostar) unable to bring this "obvious" technology to their device to begin with? They didn't. Their first device couldn't do this. They could, once they saw Tivos machine, though. And this was their downfall.

Again, your entire arguement is invalid, because if it *were* obvious, Echostar would have done it from the start.

And yeah, your arguement with 2 VCRs is just as stupid. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

Go patent Mayostard or Mustardayonnaise or something.

Usually its always replacing a chip somewhere to allow this to happen. The cool thing here is that drive firmware can be rewritten. Once someone figures out how to run unsigned code, you'll see an ISO that will update your drives firmware without needing to put a hacked firmware chip in making it even less painful.

Either way, 360 devs are shitting themselves right about now. When this happened with the Dreamcast, developer support disappeared and went to the PS2.

I have a feeling a lot of current XBox360 projects are about to be turned into PS3 projects.

  7. iTunes DRM does not restrict. on EFF Pushes Consumers to Claim Rootkit Compensation · · Score: 1

They tell you to burn the music into audio CD format after you purchase it. iTunes even does the burning for you. What this does is make a 100% DRM free audio CD. You can then rip that CD to any device you want, as many times as you want, for the rest of your life completely, and 100% DRM free. The only thing that is restricted is being able to pass around that original file, which sits on my hard drive just long enough to burn to audio CD and rerip and it's gone forever.

But usually I have to be within 2-3 feet of the speakers. Sometimes it can happen across the room. From what i've gathered it's just the phone monitoring its reception and this causes static to whatever speakers are near. And yeah, when I go on flights I double and triple check to make sure its off. The last thing I want to do is die because my cell phone lost a bar of reception.

  9. Baloney. How did that get modded up? on RIAA: Ripping CDs to iPod not 'Fair Use' · · Score: 5, Interesting
Apple specifically tells you to back your songs up the moment you purchase them by burning them onto an audio CD with the iTunes software itself! At which point you not only have a hard copy of the music you just bought from iTunes, but it is now DRM FREE. You can rerip that CD as many times as you want with NO DRM on the actual files. You can even do this with iTunes itself!

Your whole point about CDs costing less than iTunes is also bunk. Nearly every album on iTunes that can be bought as an album costs quite a bit LESS than any copy I can find in the stores on CD unless they are clearencing them out.

Your DRM tin foil hat theory is disturbing.

It looks like a nice step up from cell phone browsers in both the fact that you gain more screen area, an actually decent input device, and the fact that you're not getting charged for every byte sent over the line (Depending, usually airport wifi access is free).

I'm looking forward to it. Especially now that Google Chat is integrated into their gmail, I can have full IM access with my DS on the go as well. Slick.

How do we honestly know Microsoft wont put backdoors in their own operating system for the sole purpose to sell their own anti-virus software? Unless we have people auditing them and their source code, I really dont see how this is anything but a conflict of interest by selling this. It should be integrated into the OS, and I have a feeling they might be forced to do just that after a few large mistakes take advantage of Vista that only Microsoft seems to know how to fix.

Which happens to be their only competition right now, which is also probably why you haven't seen a Windows version. 18. Nintendo demographic. on 10 Million Nintendo DS Units Sold Since Launch · · Score: 4, Insightful
The most Nintendo buyers were stated to be 17-35 for the Gamecube. I would suspect that for the DS it may be a bit on the lower end simply because of the price of the system and the games themselves. I've seen coworkers buy them without hesitation for their kids because the prices are simply reasonable. You look at the PSP and the games all run $50, and the movies are more expensive than their DVD counterparts somehow.

I do know a lot of people in their 30s who also own a DS, and they bought it from word of mouth and actually having played one. Hopefully the way the DS is selling is a preview of what is to come with the Revolution. I look at the PSP and XBox360 and I just am not excited. Sure, they have some amazing hardware. Blazing processors, awesome widescreen goodness. But the games... The gameplay.. It's just the same thing in a newer package. With the DS i'm drawing jumps for Kirby to launch off of to finish the level! I'm drawing spirals to have him avoid being hit! I haven't had this much fun since the 2600.

  19. Why the "Replace Tivo" hardon? on The Odds at Macworld · · Score: 3, Insightful
I dont understand this. Tivo right now, works perfect. It is the iPod of DVRs. The only way this will be replaced by Apple is if Apple releases a machine that can do CableCard HDTV recordings - And do it as simple and elegantly as Tivo can. We have a problem here, for this sort of recording, people will be wanting 500 gig or so of space. I hardly think you're going to be sticking this much space in a Mac Mini.

I just dont think Apple is going to make a DVR to actually compete with Tivo. Let alone "defeat it in one fell swoop!!#!11111!!!".

Might they make DVR software for say, college kids and such? With a little dongle for cable input? Sure. But this would hardly make any waves in the DVR market.

  22. You can burn it to CD within iTunes. on Apple Holding Back the Music Business? · · Score: 1
You forgot to mention that when you buy that music off iTunes, the first thing it mentions is to burn it to Audio CD. iTunes lets you burn any of your purchased music onto an AUDIO CD right from within the program. I believe it allows you to do this 6 times per song. From there you can rip it into any format you want for your so called "future players". I dont understand how you even got rated "Insightful". Maybe you simply dont have a $15 CD burner or something? Who knows.

When photographers are doing a photoshoot of a model for a day they might end up with close to 10,000 images that they'll have to sort through. This is where Aperature comes into play. A $300 camera has software that comes along with it that is probably more than it will ever need.

It really sucks.
