Just last night as I was playing SSBM with my stepson, I was thinking, "Wow this is really helping him prepare for the world. I wish I had something like this growing up, instead of Combat, Adventure, and Pitfall with their pathetic graphics on a 2600. I probably would have been more successful."
Well, actually I wasn't. But I did think it was a fun way to relax and spend time with my stepson. Maybe it's a male thing, but it is always easier for fathers and sons to spend time together when they are doing something. For my dad and I it was 1 on 1 basketball. Previous generations had fishing and gathering fireflys. For us, it's gaming. Whatever works, use it;-)
Could we possibly be overthinking these "issues" with gaming?
Since the crater is 23 miles across and close to a mile deep, the patch of ice, judging from the picture, is actually fairly good size. Not enough for sustainable human development, but enough to demonstrate that there is water here and there.
It is somewhat interesting to think about how deeply imbedded within us the concept of storytelling is. First, it was doen orally, came performances and the written word. From there we moved into movies (first silently and then with "talkies") and television. Now we are entering the genre of storytelling in which different people can play the same game and be told different stories. That's pretty amazing when you think of it. It is also kind of amazing that through all of these different iterations, it the fulfilliment of the basic human need of absorbing stories.
Personally, I'm looking forward to experiencing the places that games take this ancient tradition.
Hook you index and middle finger slightly while holding them together. Keep your thumb, ring finger, and pinky down. Place the side of your hands on the top your head between your temple and your ear. Rotate slowly. No I don't remember the reference but its funny as hell when a whole group of people doesn't it while shouting "Internation Order of the Llama!"
Personally, I think it makes sense to prohibit minors from being able to buy or rent explicit games. Should an 8 year old really be allowed to waltz in and rent GTA? Or buy Resident Evil 4? It seems that by fighting things like this, the industry is portraying itself as wanting young kids to play games with content beyond their maturity.
Bill is standing in front of a huge monitor displaying all the major hardware vendors. With a fluffy white cat on his lap and a pinky delicattely placed next to his mouth, he announces to the group that if they do not want his support revoked, they will have to pay, "One hundred Meeeellion dollars."
The vendors laugh and a hush falls over the Redmond conference table. "Fine," replies Bill, calmly stroking the cat before deftly returning his pinky to his lips, "One hundred Beeeellion dollars!"
the current timetable still makes the machine's territorial releases far closer than any other modern gaming machine. (emphasis added)
So what does that make the Xbox? Archaic? Medeivel? Ancient, perhaps? WOuldn't next generation, or newest generation be a bit more accurate than "modern?"
What isn't said in the article is why he was killed. Was he killed by someone he knew in one of those violent fits that happen from time to time, or was it something else. I doubt he was beaten to death for sending e-mails, but considering the reputation the Russian Mob has, it does make one wonder. Could traditional Organized Crime groups be trying to bully their way into electronic fraud and such? Or has it already happened and they're eliminating the competition?
This actually happens far more than most people realize. Close to 37% of comparative statistics are in opposition to each other, while nigh on 79.3% of all statistics continue to be made up. There's also a a roughly 100% chance of this getting modded redundant if I don't hit "submit" in the next 9.3 seconds. We'll all know whether I made or not shortly...
I blame the Atkins craze for the sudden diminishing of cookies. On a side note, as a general rule, I'm pretty happy with any behavior that makes marketer's lives more difficult. Just one of those rules of thumb.
If the 360 isn't fully compatible with the XBox, won't this lead to some disconnect in XBox Live down the road? How long will they support folks play Halo 2 on XBox when Halo 3 is out for the 360?
I'm guessing that part of the reason why the XBox Live user base has increased is beacuse the consoles have gone down in price. I wonder how many of those 2 mil users are planning on upgrading to a 360 right away?
That would be the other important question- how much risk would IBM take in releasing the code? Would SCO suddenly decide that they need to investigate OS/2 also? Or some other small company that is just trying to pull an SCO? It could very well be that the potential risks far outweigh the benefits as far as IBM is concerned, props notwithstanding.
So here goes: After reading the first wave of posts it seems that there are other entity's source code in OS/2. So is it possible for IBM to make available its source code for OS/2 only? If they provide the code with gaps, couldn't those in the Open Source Community fill them in? My gut tells me that to do so would be far too complicated for the benefits, but not being a Software Engineering type I don't know for sure.
does the fact that you can remain compatible with today's applications and data on hardware that is almost a decade old, impede PC sales?
Yes, it does impede sales. However, that's just part of the equation. PC hardware seems to walked into the Land of Diminishing Returns. The extra cost of new hardware doesn't seem justified when the systems that people have work fast enough them. If your computer does everything you want it to, why upgrade?
Even more fun is getting fragged by your kids (and their friends). At least I know when I go into it that I'm not going to win. Those few occasions when I actually do pull off the upset are even more fun then;-)

I wonder what a core sample would show?

Because we have Bill Nye the Science Guy and they don't;-)
Disclaimer: all opinions about coolness or suckage based on 2 decade old memories. YMMV.
But that's my $.02...

"Shit," reply the executives.

When I saw it was being produced by a branch of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation.
Exactly. Which is why I think there could soon be a market for the Do-Not-Call-Air-Horn ! Get your now, before supplies run out!

"No see I'm version 1.1. Before me was 2.5, 3.4, and 4.2. Its a long story involving a time machine and version numbers."
The last time I pruned the flowers my wife said I had hacked them. Does that count?

Reminds me of using the Ninja Rope in Worms2 to swing across the length of the underground cavern maps to wreak some shotgun havoc;-) Good times.

Like the Despair poster for Apathy says, "If We Don't Take Care of the Customer, Maybe They'll Stop Bugging Us."
