Not to mention the extremely disturbing precedent being set here. The word "terrorist" is becoming similar to how the word "communist" was used during the Cold War. I.e., a term you apply to anybody you don't like in order to dehumanize them. I find it sickening.

Oh, you mean like the words "liberal" or "conservative"?

Review 150+ configuration files? On a single machine? What are you doing that touches the configuration files that much? The only time I ever see any large amounts of conf files changing is during an update to X[free|org] or with baselayout.

dispatch-conf with rcs is a pretty cool setup, but 90% of the time etc-update works just fine. I haven't really found dispatch-conf to be all that much better at merging config changes over etc-update's "r" and "l" approach.

  8. FREE in other languages on ESR's Halloween XI -- Get the FUD · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wonder if Linux/FOSS evangelism is much easier in non-English-speaking countries? I mean, most of the FUD and confusion in the US, UK, et al, seems to stem from the difference between free-as-in-speech and free-as-in-beer.

Maybe that's why Brazil and France (for example) are migrating to Linux/FOSS. After all, the French and Portuguese languages have different words for the two meanings of "free". It's probably easier to make the case for "free" software.

Sony seems to be a big screw up here likely because they are both an electronics company AND a media company. Can you imagine trying to make both sides happy during the design phase for their media products? If they were only an electronics company, their products would probably much better from the consumer's standpoint.

Maybe that's the answer to electonic voting: ATM machines. Take the existing ATM technology and extend it to voting rather than re-inventing the wheel. Instead of a paper voter registration card, you get a type of credit-card with a magstripe. After the volunteers verify your ID and your voting card, you step up to the ATM/voting machine. Instead of withdrawing money from an account, you "deposit" a single vote into a candidates "account". After you're done, you get a receipt. Brilliant!

Also, what we may see PVR's do fairly soon is updating programming information using data piggybacked on a broadcast signal instead of having to "call back" using a telephone line or an Ethernet connection.

The combo DirecTV/TiVo units already do this. They get the program listings over the satellite. The phone is only used for recording pay-per-view transactions, for downloading software updates, and perhaps a few other things.

Or get a Canon AE-1p off of Ebay like I did. It has selectable shutter and aperature priority. It can be fully manual, or fully auto (manual focus, though). Nice camera. In addition to the 50mm lens, I picked up a 80-300mm lens and a nice flash. I should probably use it more than I do. If you buy used, be sure to set aside $50-$100 additional to get the camera cleaned and the seals re-done.
