"Slashdot: We promote Linux and Mozilla, and we bash Microsoft in every way we can, even if it involves writing award winning fiction."
This doesn't fit my definition of flamebait either. It is a satirical criticism of how Slashdot generally works, and should really be modded up instead of down. Why? For the simple reason that commentary like this gives people an idea of how they come across.
"To many people who post on Slashdot, it's a "well-known fact" that all consoles are sold at a loss and that's not true."
The Playstation 2 may not have been sold at a loss, but Sony did spend $2 billion on it before it finally made it into the market. You can sell at a loss, or you can spend ludicrous amounts of money before it launches, you're still in the hole one way or another.
"I would much rather buy a case with a low-end CPU, room for more than 4 drives, and build a RAID system with a hot-spare or two. Cost more? Yeah... in the short term."
It'd cost you more in the long term too, if you tried to use that as a portable solution.
"I don't agree with meta-moderating all unfair posts down, but I do agree that the only way meta moderation will be fixed is by breaking it in the first place"
I think abusive moderatorship would drop significantly if we can see who mods who for what.
I think AC's right, though, it ain't going to happen unless meta-moderation is demonstratably underpowered.
"Mods: Why did you mod my post as offtopic? The poster misspelled a word by a mile and a half, and the brilliant editor failed to catch it. This is offtopic how, exactly?"
Did the mispelling cause confusion? No? What's your case?
Hint: You might not have gotten the mod if not for how hot-headed you were over it.
>And I give no real attention to people whose first words to me are to call me an "immature" "ass".
You should. You cannot comb your hair without a mirror.
>Your opinion is worthless to me. I have no intention of correcting your false views of me.
My views are not false. I used to behave just like you. I learned from it and grew. One day, I hope you do the same. Until that day comes, expect more responses like immature and ass.
Heh. I find it interesting, really. May I assume that the first shot you are calling mud-slinging is NG's saying your view was ill-thought? I am sorry to say, but that is not mud slinging. That was your opportunity to demonstrate how you intelligently arrived at that view. Considering the extremity and lack of detail in your original post, you were obligated to elaborate on your view.
You can blame NG and myself for your lack of civility if you like. Just remember that if that is going to be the way you handle people in the future, you may fully expect your posts to be challenged down the road. Nobody gives real attention to people who talk in an extreme sense and then deflect the blame on everybody but themselves when things go sour.
As for being a cheerleader andnot contribute in a meaningful way, you are mistaken. I have shown you your own faults. The idea is that you grow from them. I would highly recommend you give them a careful read and consideration. Frankly, I expect you to keep acting like an ass. Surprise me.
You two were debating about Photoshop and freedom. When he came back to you about the freedom statement, you tried to insult his personality instead of continuing the discussion. That is probably what he's referring to, and yes you are an ass for it. I have to admit, I have been having fun watching you two duke it out.
People often stoop to immature levels to try to win, then when some maturity is injected into it, they get even more immature. I'm really curious how far you will go.
You have a captive audience here, don't let us down.:)
I think the mods should have another look at that post and reconsider the troll mod. Vice City was about to fade into the night before they gave it a whole new firestorm of media attention. This story about San Andreas probably would not have been so Slashdot worthy if not for the all the complaining about Vice City.
They could have it take place in the future, in a city not unlike the 'future' in Back to the Future 2. You guys can't tell me a hoverboard chase wouldn't be fun as hell in that game.

Negligence may make a crime or misbehaviour easier to commit. Fine. But somebody did something wrong, and they full well knew they were doing something wrong. If this aspect of any given case doesn't draw enough attention, then you're going to start seeing excuses like "Well they didn't do anything to prevent me from doing it, so I thought it was okay!"
Getting back to the topic at hand here, I don't agree with him being suspended, but NG's point certainly is not overrated. The student didn't accidently stumble onto that command, he knew what it would do, and it blipped up on everybody's screen. If he isn't allowed to talk in class, why would this be a special case? I can understand the sympathy for this person, but come on, why should he get a "fet out of jail free" card?
"Sadly, I see this argument all too often. Price isn't everything, folks. If I save $600 by using Gimp instead of Photoshop, but the result isn't good enough to get paid for the project, then Gimp effectively isn't free."
If this concept about software cannot be understood by the Open Source zealots, I don't know how anybody could ever take them seriously.
"Face it, this isn't news, it's a pitchfork sharpening party."
This isn't a -1 Troll. It's a pretty good description of the point of this flamebait article. Insightful? Funny? Sure. Flamebait or Troll? Nah. Perhaps if the story was written with more facts and less editorial, then I'd agree with this moderation.

"um, DavrOS?"
That's a bad pun, but it made me laugh. I just hope nobody makes a TarDOS joke.

Hehe that was kinda funny. The mods took it a bit too seriously, though.

Canada is also very much influenced by French. I would say you pretty much backed up his point by mentioning Candada.
Maybe he's running Redhat?

The denials I've read were not the existence of global warming, but that humans are the cause of it.

If you're gonna to troll, try using a topic that hasn't been done to death?
Here's something a little fresher:

"I'll pass on the Kray Suppository, thank you."
I'll pass the Kray Suppositiry, hope it's waterproof.
"It's nice to be able to use an OS without needing to be a power user."
