But by actively screwing with the models people had already purchased and removing the functionality, they pretty much ended any ability they have to market a PS* model as "capable of running Linux". Which means the whole point of offering it is killed dead - if you can't use it as a selling point for the device, what purpose does it have?

I never saw mention of OtherOS in SCEfoo marketing materials, other than the manual, and webpage that mentions it. It's not a marketing point, but there to encourage people to learn the ins and outs of programming for the Cell. Hobbyist development. Being able to run a real web browser like Firefox (or Opera) or OpenOffice because of that is secondary.

Don't blame Sony, blame Geohot. If he hadn't found that hole, they'd have left it in. And yes, I did have Linux on my PS3.

Not exactly. The Cell has one PPE core, that's hyperthreaded with Altivec, and 7 SPE's, one of which is reserved, so you get access to 6 under Linux. Still, it's a number crunching beastie. Untill quite recently most of the processing power of Folding@home was in all those PS3's running it, and they're still about one third of it.

Unlimited number of downloads on up to 5 devices. An example of how it works:

I have a PS3, a PSP 3000 and a PSP-1000 (with broken UMD drive). I can pay for a PSN PSone title and have it on all three. If I happen to accidentally delete it on one of them, I can re download it, no problem. If I get a PSP Go and another PS3, I can also have it on them too. If I go to a friends house and want to show him the PSone title, I can download it on his PS3, as long as I have less than 5 "authorized machines", once I do, by setting up my user account on his box (in addition to his) his machine becomes one of the 5 "authorized".

In some ways is a very bad designer, the best example being the Super Mario Bros white block trick in 1-3. How many people found that on their own, rather than seeing it done in "The Wizard" or reading a magazine. That sort of thing is counter-intuitive and there's stuff like that in many other Miyamoto games. He's done a few clunkers himself, Zelda II and Luigi's Mansion being most notable.

Sony has ignored the fact that console players want simple, fun games.

No, Sony knows it's market and it's biggest fans. While Nintendo IS selling plenty of Wii's to grandparents and soccer moms, Sony knows that not ALL console players want to do Yoga or play Wii Sports and buy no other games.

Sony's all about the "little bit of this, little bit of that." these days, kind of like how they were during the PS2 days. During the early PS3 days they were a little too focused on the kind of testosteroney young male demographic that likes Halo and Madden, but things are a touch better now. More RPG's would do the PS3 some good since the PS2's biggest fans these days are RPG gamers who haven't needed to buy PS3's since there are still new RPG and RPG-ish games coming out for the PS2.

I've told you a million times, you really can't do a good console game as a one man in a garage setup. You do a prototype, using Flash, pygame + SDL, whatever. That, you put in your portfolio to show off to potential employers/ dev houses/ publishers/partners. Then you do that, and that either gets you money or access to a devkit.

If you want to be a console developer you actually have to DO stuff rather than whine about the barriers to entry all the time. Take vacation time to interview if you have to, but just do something.

I remember Craig Kubey's "Winner's Book of Video Games" had some good general strategies that are even somewhat applicable today. Let's see if I can remember some:

    1. Choose life, avoid death. If you stay alive, you can play forever, racking up tons of points.

    2. Defense Defense. Defense is more important than offense, but sometimes a good offense can compensate for a weak defense.

    3. Not to much, or too little, but just right. Don't waste your most powerful weapons on weak opponents. Then again, if you're about to die, using your superweapon might save you.

    4. Pig out when the slop is handy. Some games give you moments where you can really rack up points/items/foo...take advantage

    5. Be ship/character centric. Don't focus so much on your opponents that you fail to see that you're about to run out of smart bombs or energy.

    6. A person's got to know their limitations. Meaning know the limits of your on screen representations abilities, if you can only shoot half way across the screen, don't bother shooting at something all the way across.

I used to have a copy of the book, but I can't find it.
